PEACEMAKER Star John Cena Reveals DC & Marvel Roles He Lost Out On Before Landing THE SUICIDE SQUAD

John Cena, star of the HBO Max series Peacemaker, has revealed some of the comic book movie roles that he auditioned for prior to landing the lead in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena stars in Peacemaker, which is now streaming on HBO Max. The series is the best reviewed entry in the DC Extended Universe to date, having even surpassed the Rotten Tomatoes score of The Suicide Squad (of which it is a spinoff from).

However, the part of Christopher Smith, A.K.A. Peacemaker, wasn't Cena's first choice when it comes to comic book movie roles. The actor recently featured on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast where he explained that, before landing the part in The Suicide Squad, he actually tried out for multiple other DC and Marvel film roles.

"I can't tell you how many superhero roles I've been rejected for," Cena began before specifically name-dropping a couple of them. "Shazam is certainly one. There was a brief try at the Deadpool universe, rejection." The Deadpool role that Cena is referring to is almost certainly that of edgy time-traveller, Cable.

The part of Cable ended up going to Josh Brolin and the role of Shazam to Zachary Levi. "Shazam! was Dikembe Mutumbo. There was a few in the Marvel universe, rejected. But you know, I kept trying." By the sounds of it, losing out on the titular role in Shazam! particularly stung for Cena. "I think like a child, so Shazam was super interesting to me."

"I read all those scripts, and I read all those parts, and I was like, 'Man, I really think I could add to this,' and just rejection after rejection after rejection after rejection," Cena said before recounting finally landing the role of Peacemaker:

But I guess that's what... the lows make the highs high. And the crazy thing was, I wasn't first on the list for Peacemaker. James had a long list, and it happened by accident, too. He's like, 'Hey, I'm in Atlanta, I'd just love to come and talk to you for a second.' We sat down in his pre-production office, which was literally like a war headquarters where you could see the whole movie in posterboard taped around his office, and he started talking about Peacemaker, and he's like, 'I think you should do it.' So I'm not rejected? They usually say, like, 'Hey, love you man, but we're just going in another direction.'

Good on him for finally getting a comic book movie role, and a great one at that. In fact, Peacemaker is the peak of Cena's acting career according to Josh Wilding's four-and-a-half-star review for the series that you can check out here.

Well I'm glad he was rejected.

Brolin as Cable was a beast, and no way Cena would fit someone as handsome as Shazam.

And Peacemaker just fits him perfectly.

I think he would’ve done a wonderful job with Shazam and he actually has the build for him too. Wouldn’t need any muscle padding.

@BlackBeltJones - He might have played him a little less silly as well

I loved Shazam but the superhero and Billy were so tonally different to the point where they definitely felt like different characters altogether. How is the one blessed with the Wisdom of Solomon, acting WAY more goofy and childlike than the actual kid?

@lordSTALE - I enjoy that movie but agreed. There was no correlation between two.

He was more of a child as an adult. More immature when he was a man. The Wisdom of Solomon told him to put a mattress down to cushion the fall of a bus…

@lordSTALE - I noticed as well,Billy was too cool for school and the next minute as Shazam he's so goofy and zany lol

@lordSTALE - agreed, while I love the movie Shazam and think it’s the best DCEU movie created thus far, Billy and his alter ego were too different. I get that when he’s Shazam he’s excited and gleeful because he has these new abilities, boasting a new confidence, but then he transforms back to Billy again and he acts mopey. Like he complete forgot he has these amazing by powers

I still wish he was cast as Shazam. he would have been great. Plus eventually seeing him go up against the rock would have been fun.

@micvalpro - think it was cena who said this he doesn’t want be in movies with other wrestlers which if true doesn’t make sense he was in scooby doo movie with other wrestlers

@dragon316 - did he make that statement before or after the Scooby movie?

I think he would've been great as Shazam. Albeit I don't like Zachary Levi in the role, nor even the film itself, so.

Oh yeah people wanted him for Shazam for a long time

Could have been cool to see Rock VS Cena (no believable way for that to happen with the characters they are playing)

Both him and rock are limited actors, but they bring a certain amount of charm to their roles

Probably because he’s not very heroic his stance on Taiwan proved that

Shazam could've worked, but I think he could've made a cool Colossus too

I could see him as Ben Grimm.

Would’ve been more believable against the Rock who is such a No Planet Fitness Lunk that he never heard of Zachary Levi and still thinks Cavill is Superman. Bet he would’ve noticed Cena. What a T Rex brained dude

If it wasn't Cable, he would have made a good Colossus, IMO.

Honestly think he could have been great as Cable or Shazam, but getting to make his mark in a big way on a character like Peacemaker is even cooler to me.

Honestly... John Cena would've been a great Shazam. I don't particularly like Levi in the role, like he's good... But too childish. I guess that's not even his fault if that's what the writing and direction is telling him what to do.

Regardless, Cena would've been a good Shazam

My choices for Shazam were between Cena and Alan Ritchson. Levy is fine but what happens when the kid is an adult. his whole schtick gets thrown out.
