After a lengthy search, CBS finally announced this past week that Melissa Benoist will bring Supergirl to life on the small screen in the upcoming TV series from writers/producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. It was a big piece of news, and pretty exciting for fans of the character, as DC Comics recruited yet another Glee alum (the other being The Flash's Grant Gustin of course).

Many fans had their own personal favourites of course, and a variety of names would be mentioned in the early stages of casting. However, the choice of Benoist seemingly came out of nowhere!

According to the network's official character description for this iteration of the fan-favourite DC Comics character, this version of the fan-favourite superhero was sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. After repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.

The question now is, does Whiplash star Melissa Benoist fit the bill? Here's your chance to decide...
