Mechad Brooks is probably the most well-known actor on CBS' Supergirl, thanks to stints on popular TV shows such as True Blood and Necessary Roughness. But Jeremy Jordan's arc with Melissa Benoists will combine to make up a central chunk of the superhero drama which focuses on Kara Zor-El stepping into the spotlight after years of keeping her powers hidden from the world. In a new interview, Brooks and Jordan discuss how the show reinvents their characters in fresh and invigorating ways and also tease a potential love story between, Supergirl, James Olsen and the future-Toyman.
Kicking things off, Jordan stated that there wasn't much he could say about this new version of Toyman, Winn Schott, other than the fact that it would be a different interpretation and backstory from the Toyman in DC Comics. "[I'm not] the red-headed, jolly, weird-clothing-wearing Toyman. Certainly, that's not how we meet [Winn Schott]. And he certainly has a different backstory. But it's equally as exciting. As we're sort of getting into a few episodes, it's becoming more and more clear. It's one of those things like, "Oh, I see: My character shares the name of this thing... Oh, I wonder what that means?" But there's literally no indication of [him becoming Toyman right now], so I'm learning along with the audience." Apparently, this version of Toyman is still a tech-genius but one who undervalues his abilities. He'll be the tech-support for Team Supergirl, the Felicity (Arrow) or Cisco (The Flash) of the group.
As for a potential love-triangle between Supergirl, Schott and Olsen, Jordan has apparently been a long time admirer of Kara, long before he finds out about Supergirl. But Brooks teased that it won't be a love-triangle on Supergirl but a "love rhombus" meaning there's a fourth, interested party in the wings. Jordan added, "There's definitely some love going toward Kara on both sides. Now, what we see in the pilot is, she's definitely a little more into James, for sure."
The two also go on to discus the inherent difficulties of dating a woman who's a million times stronger than you are. Brooks jokes, "she could hug me a little too hard, make my head pop off." Jordan added, "it's really interesting to think of a character who's stronger than anything else on Earth but is sort of betrays herself with a weakness that's put upon her by the world. And how she can overcome that through the help of all her friends."
The Supergirl TV show premieres on CBS, October 26th at 8:30PM.
In the vast DC Comics Universe of super heroes, the rich mythology of Superman, the planet Krypton and the House of El is perhaps the most famous and instantly recognizable. Enter Supergirl (Melissa Benoist)!
Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El, but didn't arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin.
Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be.
With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world. Her foes include both a sinister extraterrestrial menace and the high-tech terrestrial threat of clever villains with powerful weaponry.
Produced by Berlanti Productions (Arrow, The Flash, Pan), this one-hour drama is an epic action-adventure for the entire family. Combining the heart, humor and spectacle of a super hero series, with the week-to-week intrigue of the DEO's investigations, Kara's childhood memories of her time on Krypton and the sophisticated workplace dramedy of her secret identity at Catco, Supergirl is charged with true epic storytelling—bringing a strong female hero to television screens at long last.
