THE SANDMAN: Neil Gaiman Says He's Already Thinking About Actors To Play Delirium, Destiny & Destruction

Netflix's The Sandman introduced several members of Morpheus' family, but we've yet to meet Destiny, Delirium or Destruction, and Neil Gaiman says he's begun to mull over actors who could play them.

The Sandman hasn't been officially renewed for a second season yet, and despite strong viewership and critical acclaim, it's best never to count any chickens when it comes to Netflix shows.

Still, co-creator/EP Neil Gaiman is confident that we will get to return to The Dreaming at some point, and has already begun to think about actors who could potentially play the other members of Morpheus' highly dysfunctional family.

We met Death, Desire and Despair during season 1, but Dream's older brother Destiny and younger siblings Delirium and Destruction have yet to be introduced. "Right now, what we’re doing is every time I think of or run into or pass or notice an actor who could be either a Destruction or a Delirium, Allan [Heinberg] gets an email," Gaiman tells Variety.

Destiny only makes a few brief appearances in the comics, and doesn't really influence the story to any great degree (because he already knows how all stories begin and end), while Destruction, the prodigal brother of The Endless, shows up even less. Delirium, who was once Delight, has a much bigger part to play, and along with Death, is arguably the most popular member of Morpheus' family.

Del joins Dream on a road-trip in the "Brief Lives" arc, which results in some of the funniest and most heartfelt moments in the entire run.

Gaiman's comments shouldn't be taken as an indication that he's actually met with anyone for these roles (though it's certainly possible), but we'd be very interested to learn if Heinberg was on board with any of his suggestions.

Have you guys finished The Sandman yet? If so, what did you think? Have a read through our review here, and be sure to drop us a comment down below.

"There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way."

The Sandman also stars Kirby Howell Baptiste as Death, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Donna Preston as Despair, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Charles Dance as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Sanjeeve Bhaskar as Cain. Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, while David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny.

The 10-episode first season of The Sandman adapts the first two arcs of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes" and "The Doll's House."

Don’t know if I’m keen for a sexond season. Loved the villains, Holbrook and Thewlis were great. Really wanted to like Dream himself but jusy couldn’t. Except for his friendship with the guy who couldn’t die, he acted well in that episode.

One reviewer said it best. He comes across more like Robert Pattison’s Twilight vampire, with the same constipated face. More like an emo teen than an immortal ethereal being.

@connorblaze - I don't know, I liked his acting. I feel like not many things would phase an immortal being, he has seen it all so I understand the lack of stronger emotions. I do agree that he episode with the guy that couldn't die was great though, one of my favourites together with the diner one and the one in Hell.

Seeing as the show made it a point to not name the last sibling, is naming Destruction potentially a spoiler? I haven't read the comics.

The original Sandman series pushed a lot of boundaries, for good or for bad. The show is a woke joke. Other than the parts with Sandman and Hob, and maybe a little bit of the stuff with Death, I didn't buy into the actor playing Sandman. It seems like he's crying in every scene. To make matters worse, the other characters, especially the female characters all seem to be smarter than he is. And the gender-swapping is insane. Lucien could have been a black male. Why is he a female? Her acting is good, but why female? Constantine is a female. Why? So she could be a lesbian? Rose is black. Why? I didn't even realize it was Rose. Death is obviously black. Why? The actress is excellent, I'll give her that. I loved her portrayal but I just couldn't see her as Death. Not the Death I saw in comics and in comic book conventions. Why couldn't she be a white female? Lucifer is a woman. I get that Lucifer is supposed to be sexless but in the comics Lucifer came across as being more male than female, in my mind. I wanted to enjoy the series and there have been some decent parts, but overall I'm 7 episodes in and I'm struggling to push myself towards the end of it. Now there is talk about who the other Endless should be? I'm guessing one will be Asian. One will be a transexual and another will be a gorilla.

well, first half of season was great. Then Rose becomes the plot and its a straight up [frick]ing bore. more Lucifer, more Morpheus please. I couldnt give a lesser [frick] about Vortex and the last half of that show. but i never read the comics so im a pleb when it comes to this. man i thought i was watching something truly great after that Diner episode. then it all went to shit.

Just like many have commented here - second half was a bore .... Didn't care a bit about Rose, the pregnant lady etc..
Acting also pretty much sucked for most of the people except Fry, Holbrook, Thewlis and the lady death.
Contrary to others, I also liked the new Lucien...

And the lead - toooo twilighty... With an almost comical pout if the face...
