THE SANDMAN: Neil Gaiman Says He's Already Thinking About Actors To Play Delirium, Destiny & Destruction

Netflix's The Sandman introduced several members of Morpheus' family, but we've yet to meet Destiny, Delirium or Destruction, and Neil Gaiman says he's begun to mull over actors who could play them.

The Sandman hasn't been officially renewed for a second season yet, and despite strong viewership and critical acclaim, it's best never to count any chickens when it comes to Netflix shows.

Still, co-creator/EP Neil Gaiman is confident that we will get to return to The Dreaming at some point, and has already begun to think about actors who could potentially play the other members of Morpheus' highly dysfunctional family.

We met Death, Desire and Despair during season 1, but Dream's older brother Destiny and younger siblings Delirium and Destruction have yet to be introduced. "Right now, what we’re doing is every time I think of or run into or pass or notice an actor who could be either a Destruction or a Delirium, Allan [Heinberg] gets an email," Gaiman tells Variety.

Destiny only makes a few brief appearances in the comics, and doesn't really influence the story to any great degree (because he already knows how all stories begin and end), while Destruction, the prodigal brother of The Endless, shows up even less. Delirium, who was once Delight, has a much bigger part to play, and along with Death, is arguably the most popular member of Morpheus' family.

Del joins Dream on a road-trip in the "Brief Lives" arc, which results in some of the funniest and most heartfelt moments in the entire run.

Gaiman's comments shouldn't be taken as an indication that he's actually met with anyone for these roles (though it's certainly possible), but we'd be very interested to learn if Heinberg was on board with any of his suggestions.

"There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way."

The Sandman also stars Kirby Howell Baptiste as Death, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Donna Preston as Despair, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Charles Dance as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Sanjeeve Bhaskar as Cain. Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, while David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny.

The 10-episode first season of The Sandman adapts the first two arcs of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes" and "The Doll's House."
