SDCC '14: Chris Carter On A Possible X-FILES Reboot

X-Files is owned by 20th Century Fox and despite fans begging for a third film there seems to be another way in which they will get more of Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny) - reboot! The first film pulled in $190 million and the lackluster sequel only did $68 million. So, you can understand why Fox is reluctant to greenlight a third film. But X-Files is an asset and at some point Fox has to think about cashing in on the property once again. Could it be time to reboot the television series? Chris Carter, the show's creator talked to Vulture about it.

Vulture: The heads of 20th Century Fox TV, which produced The X-Files, are now also in charge of the Fox network. Does this make it more or less likely there’ll be some sort of reboot or sequel to the show? Things were tense between you and the suits at the studio for a while; you filed a big lawsuit against them.
Chris Carter: A lot of the people that were involved in that [lawsuit] have moved on. It’s the business. I’m very friendly with Gary and Dana. Dana and I basically cut our teeth at the same time. She was a publicist. It’s nice to go through your career with someone you have respect for and were in the trenches with. Dana and I sat in the same room during the first market testing of The X-Files. She was like a junior publicist, and I was this unproven producer. She was there at the beginning. So I owe her a lot. And certainly she and I have talked a lot about this.

Vulture: Is that a way of saying a reboot is happening?
Chris Carter: That’s just a way of saying there certainly have been conversations.

Vulture: So why hasn’t it happened?
Chris Carter: I would assume nothing. Hold on a second. [Looks at phone.] This is funny — I just got a text message from David Duchovny. You can put that in! We are not only friends, but neighbors. There’s something to do with a remote control that I have. [Laughs.]

Awww man, I at least wanted to get one more X-Files flick before they do. There's infinite possibilities of new characters that can become new agents and/or different agents within the same universe as Mulder and Scully.

NO "REBOOT"!!!! Geezus. I'm so frickin' sick & tired of studios bastardizing classic movies and tv shows by trying to "reboot" them. It's like trying to clone one of your loved ones after they've passed away. They were unique and special, and there's just something wrong with always trying to go back to the well and duplicate the same characters. We want more movies, with Duchovny and Anderson. And, put them back in the FBI. Skinner can be appointed Director of the FBI, and he can reopen the X-Files and reinstate Mulder and Scully. A new tv show? I'm all for it. Just don't "reboot" it. Do a continuation of the past canon, with new agents. Don't recast Mulder and Scilly. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

No! For the love of god, if you care about how well this franchise will do, do NOT recast Scully and Mulder. Because no one will ever have the same level of chemistry that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson had.

If you are adamant about continuing this franchise, make it a continuation. New agents stumble upon the X-Files and reopen the division in the FBI.

I want to be Duchovny in that pic! At least it's good that Gillian will have a bigger Hannibal role next season.

I love the show. I have the entire run on DVD. But that last movie... omg it was horrendous...

I saw that and I thought Carter must have lost it somewhere along the way because it was the PITS.

Anyway there's a lot of room in this for fun creative story telling. It would suck if they did it without Mulder and Scully but I would still give it a chance.

If it has to be new actors, just make up new characters. Don't reboot Scully and Mulder.

I am so against this in so many ways. Leave the X-Files alone. Don't reboot it. Continue the story that was already made. Have mulder and skully be older and wiser. Give them cameos or some shit.

You will get destroyed if you tried to erase what's been. Like everyone here the X-Files just wont be the X-Files without Mulder and Skully

Rebooting The X-Files? No one wants this.

Why don't they try to actually be original and come up with an idea for a new TV show in the vein of X-Files?

Do a show about a group of friends(college students) who travel around solving unexplained mysteries(supernatural, paranormal, aliens, creatures from urban legends). Think Scooby-Doo except with adult humor, sex, edge, and no talking great dane.

I'm okay with this.
I still love watching the episodes on occasion, but they're *so* 90's.

It will be just like that From Dusk Till Dawn remake (series) – dull, pg-13 (borderline PG) and pointless.

Give us the third movie and then do what you want. I'd actually be okay with them rebooting it. The problem with doing a new series in the vein of The X Files is that its too much to live up to. I remember when Fringe premiered and they advertised it as basically the new X Files and, coming from a fan of both shows, season one of Fringe sucked for that reason. Fringe didn't get good until it became its own show, and any show that attempts to emulate The X Files again like that is going to have the same problem. I don't think a reboot or a continuation would have the problem, although I'd hate to see new versions of Mulder and Scully or any of the show's classic villains be butchered by new writers.

Loved the X-Files. Liked the films too, and Mulder and Scully deserve a conclusion to their stories, so I'm up for a third film.
I feel Duncan Jones Directing an X-Files movie would be superb too. :-)

I'd like to be neighbours with Duchovny. I'd steal his remote so we could hang out too.
