As the all-knowing Varys, Conleth Hill was one of Game of Thrones' main supporting characters. However, the Irish actor has now revealed how unhappy he was with the way things ended for the spymaster also known as the Spider.
In the show's fifth season, Varys left King's Landing and allied himself with Daenerys Targaryen. However, upon learning that Jon Snow was the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, he changed his allegiances and was executed by dragon fire for his apparent "betrayal."
Now, it's no secret that Game of Thrones' eighth and final season was incredibly divisive, with the way the fantasy series ended still discussed four years later.
During an interview with The Times (via SFFGazette.com), Hill elaborated on his issues with the HBO fantasy series.
"I thought I’d done something wrong," he admitted. "Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all. I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been."
"I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another," the actor continued. "I felt that last series was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I’m fine about it."
It's interesting to hear that there might have been some behind-the-scenes clashes, and those could go some way in explaining why Game of Thrones' final season - and the finale, in particular, felt like it was all over the place.
While Hill is within his right to be unhappy with the way Varys' story ended, it's a little strange as many would argue he went out on a high. That death scene was undeniably memorable, and his prediction about Daenerys proved correct, confirming the Spider was every bit as knowledgeable as he'd always been.
Hollywood has come to a standstill thanks to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though we remain hopeful the planned Jon Snow spin-off starring Kit Harington becomes a reality. If so, we'll get to see what became of that character and, with any luck, get a slightly more satisfying epilogue to the main series.
