ARMOR WARS Star Don Cheadle Says Rhodey Isn't Looking To Replace Tony Stark As The MCU's Iron Man

Armor Wars and Secret Invasion star Don Cheadle has weighed in on War Machine's MCU future, explaining that Rhodey isn't necessarily looking to step up and fill the void left by Tony Stark/Iron Man...

Between his Emmy-nominated cameo appearance in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and the recent confirmation that he will appear in Secret Invasion, Don Cheadle looks set to have a busy next few years in the MCU. After the latter Disney+ series, the actor will return as War Machine in a show the character is expected to take centre stage in: Armor Wars

Does all of this mean Tony Stark's best friend is being set up as the MCU's new Iron Man?

There's precedent for that in the comic books, of course, but Cheadle was quick to shoot down speculation about War Machine taking Tony's place during a recent interview at D23.

"I don’t know. I mean, I think that Rhodey is his own dude. I don’t think that anyone can really step into Tony Stark [and] Iron Man's shoes," the actor explains in the video below. "I think he did that as well as anyone could ever do it. But I think we’re going to learn a lot more about what Rhodey does want, and who he is, and what his sort of place, and the firmament of MCU will ultimately be."

He'd conclude by adding, "I honestly don’t know that much more than what you know."

War Machne has definitely played a bigger role in the MCU than many fans expected, but if anyone is going to be the "new Iron Man," we have to believe it will be Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart. How her journey will intersect with Rhodey's remains to be seen, but it would be a real shock for her to not factor into Armor Wars somehow.

What we do know is that Iron Man's death has left a huge void in the MCU, and there are likely to be a lot of heroes and villains now looking to fill it. The Department of Damage Control has already misappropriated his drones to hunt young superhumans, and we do wonder if Sentinels will ultimately be Stark tech.

Hopefully this doesn't translate to just "deconstructing" Tony stark by revealing he screwed over his friends or not understanding what it means to give an iron man suit to a black man.
suitekid
suitekid - 9/19/2022, 8:08 AM
@Origame - Rhodey has had his suit for 12 years. I do t think he’s grappling with it.

@suitekid - and falcon was working as an extention of captain america for close to that long, and we saw what happened there.
suitekid
suitekid - 9/19/2022, 10:25 AM
@Origame - Two different things. Falcon took on the mantle of Captain America and then came to accept himself as Cap in the next thing he showed up in. It’s a development of his character. Rhodey is not becoming Iron Man and he doesn’t have to come around to accepting himself as such.

@suitekid - ...so? That didn't mean they had to throw Tony and Steve under the bus to prop up Sam.

@Origame - What are you even talking about? How were they thrown under the bus?
Origame
Origame - 9/19/2022, 8:09 PM
@suitekid - Tony stark was revealed as never paying the avengers, leaving Sam to suffer financially because of it. And cap was blamed for giving a black man the shield without thinking of what that meant.

AIM or Hammer would be nice, seems doubtful

Love this statement from Cheadle, the wokies might feel threatened that he doesn't want to ride the white man's coattails because they only see legitimacy in being the legacy of a previously popular white character be it taking up their mantle or fully race swapping the character from the jump.

@Chaos200 - you really reached on that one

@Vigor - Did I? Felt effortless to me. We aren't getting a Captain America movie from a black guy who had a perfectly good mantle of his own that they could've expanded upon?

Why can't heroes be there own...

"replacing", becoming the "new" and "clone" characters like Jane Thor Falcon Captain America. Are a sign of lack of creativity.

@Lokiwasright - how would you “creatively” pass on the mantle of an established hero?
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/19/2022, 8:29 AM
@WruceBayne - You don't, this whole idea of mantle passing is just ridiculous. These are codenames and nickmanes of individual comic characters not mantles to be passed on. It would be like a famous football player with a nickname retires so the rookie replacing him takes him name and number, it's stupid.

@WarMonkey - I can tell you 10 different athletes that call themselves the GOAT.
That’s like Dick Grayson taking up the mantle of Batman when Bruce Wayne dies. Or when Bruce Wayne got “wheelchaired” by Bane and Azreal took over. That story ark created one of the best Batman villains we have till this day(in my opinion).
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/20/2022, 6:03 AM
@WruceBayne - "Greatest Of All Time" is not a mantle it's a description. I liked Azrael too. Batman Beyond would be a better example, but even then I don't like it it just feels redundant. I would have liked Terry to eventually have found his own codename in universe (out of universe we refer to him as Batman Beyond not The Batman)

I'm an individualist I guess you could say lol

I hope MODOK is a bigger deal than just his appearance in ant man. Imagine he prompts conflict in Armor wars

Rhodey being the new Iron Man sounds 1000000% better than Riri Williams being the new Iron Man. I’d say that there is no need for someone with that title. In the MCU, we don’t have to have titles passed down. Allow each hero to be their own. Captain America as a title makes sense being passed down, as it represents a country. But Iron Man does not. And let’s please not do some unintelligent thing like having a female in that title. That’s just silly and nonsensical.

10-1 odds the future of the MCU is deep fake cgi with original cast voice-overs.

The price will eventually go down on Evans, Downey, Hemsworth etc. as they get older. Meanwhile, the cgi will improve (it's possible that it sucks so much now to compensate for the future greatness).

I predict they shall all return in their younger, fully rendered form, and display themselves to the next generation as ageless Avengers...

“ but if anyone is going to be the "new Iron Man," we have to believe it will be Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart”

Cue the people here who insist to me that they aren’t replacing Stark with Ironheartt in the MSheU.

He shouldn't even be replacing Tony/Iron Man in Armor Wars. Complete bullshit that Armor Wars is finally getting made and without Iron Man.

@IronMan616 - Iron Man 2 had a perfect setup for Armor Wars. Then they made Iron Man 3 instead.....

Lord why can’t Rhodey take over?? Why push Riri??? Let Cheadle shine. Smh marvel.

really weird to see people try and force themselves to get mad about riri williams doing something she's never going to actually do. riri is ironheart, she'll never be iron man and she'll never have his title, so she cant ever replace him in his title. she'll never be iron man just like rhodey, pepper and peter parker never will be

its even stranger because the few characters that are taking other characters titles (sam, yelena, kate and maybe torres) have been established as their own unique versions. no one watched hawkeye and thought kate was replacing clint, because not only was he already retired, but he was also a stone cold killer his whole life, unlike kate who is going to be a different type of hawkeye. ditto for sam who is going to be a more politically focused cap than steve based on what they showed

people already embarrassed themselves by saying jane was replacing thor and captain carter was replacing steve so i don't get why anyone is bending over backwards to complain about riri williams replacing a character she's not replacing
Vigor
Vigor - 9/19/2022, 8:49 AM
@MagicNumber32 - I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that people will forever be complainers. Some are life long haters.
Supercat6376

@MagicNumber32 - it they are replacing those characters maybe not in name but yes they are replacing them. No need for that yet.

OmegaDaGr0dd - 9/19/2022, 8:57 AM
@Supercat6376 -

who are "those characters" that they are replacing but not in name? peter parker, pepper potts, james rhodes and riri williams have all worn iron man suits, but none of them are iron man.
OmegaDaGr0dd
OmegaDaGr0dd - 9/19/2022, 8:59 AM
@Vigor - i dont getit. marvel need more characters, not less. i cant believe people are mad that they get more characters flying around in robot suits in a comic adaptation. so strange
