HAWKEYE Producer Explains Why ECHO Spinoff Is In The Works Before The Character's MCU Debut This Month

We haven't seen Alaqua Cox in action yet, but Marvel Studios has already confirmed Maya Lopez will take centre stage in Echo following her Hawkeye debut. Now, producer Trinh Tran explains that decision...

Newcomer Alaqua Cox will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Hawkeye later this month, and Marvel Studios has already announced that a spinoff series, Echo, is coming to Disney+.

The studio clearly has a lot of faith in the actress and character to move forward with that project, though it is exciting to think about where Echo's story could go next. With abilities similar to Taskmaster, Maya Lopez is also one of the Marvel Universe's only deaf heroes and has close ties to Daredevil and The Kingpin (rumour has it the Man Without Fear will be given a crucial role on the series).

During a recent interview with Murphy's Multiverse, Hawkeye producer Trinh Tran explained the reasoning behind an Echo TV series and heaped praise on Cox for the work she's delivered.

"She is such a badass in this series. She really completely impressed us all with her determination and hard work in wanting to make sure Maya Lopez is the way everybody wants," Tran explains. "I have to say there was a bit of nervousness at the beginning because Alaqua hasn’t been a part of the industry. To get somebody brand new and pull her into a character like Maya Lopez, it’s a big deal."

"But she took it in strides, worked hard, and proved to us that there is a character who’s deaf but is able to be a part of the MCU and be a superhero in her own right."

That sounds very promising indeed, and whether Echo is joined by Daredevil and company in her series or not, something tells us it has the potential to be another must-see MCU story. There's no word on a premiere date yet, though the show's official logo was revealed during Disney+ Day.

She must be indeed really damn good, because can think of many characters that should be given a series/movie before her (same applies to Ironheart). For one I think bringing all of the Netflix heroes to the MCU should be prioritized. Characters like Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher and even Jessica Jones, deserve more than just being secondary characters in other projects.

@Urubrodi - I think her solo-series is more of a mantle to re-introduce Daredevil, King Pin, Karen Page, Electra, Foggy and the Hand (maybe even Frank).

I would assume creating a new television show called 'Daredevil' is considered as a promotional move that would only benefit the Netflix show (which Disney currently considers a liability) and hence they return these characters under the umbrella of a completely unrelated series.

If I'm not mistaken Jessica Jones (and per extention probably also Luke Cage) are going to be in 'She-Hulk' while Iron Fist might appear in a 'Shang-Chi' sequel.
They all seem to be on their way back, the question is under what umbrella but it seems clear that Disney doesn't want them to have their solo shows YET. Perhaps Netflix can enact a clause if D+ did that, like suing them for the rights on a new 'Daredevil' series with the same name or something.

plus: maybe that even gives us a chance we'll see Tennant again as Purple Man

@Blergh - Understand what you are saying, but I believe there are other ways of reintroducing some of their biggest characters without doing this excruciating slow burn. If the problem is the name of the series, then use the characters' nicknames maybe, like Marvel's Man Without Fear or something like that. I mean I hope this series is good and the character is really good, but I have no expectations for it. Similarly I hope they don't sit on the X-Men for too long (the animation doesn't count). This one is more understandable though.

@Urubrodi - they are not bringing any Netflix hero to the mcu. They are bringing the actors and make them play new versions of those characterscox isn't playing Netflix's dd in NWH.

@Urubrodi - Probably but who knows what Netflix really still has in their hands.
Could also have a clause that could see them revive an IP they lost up to 5 years ago in case of an unexpected resurgence in popularity.

Hulu had such a clause with Family Guy.
In case Family Guy suddenly had a ressurgence they could make a bid on the franchise rights from FOX

@Jeight8 - of course but that doesn't change the fact that Netflix still has a show called "Daredevil" in their line-up that still very much could have some implications of the license.

@Jeight8 - I know all that mate, that was not the point of my comment. To simplify what I want is for a big character like Daredevil be given the importance he deserves, such as his own show or movie, enough time has passed already. Regarding your point, there is no confirmation yet if we are getting new versions of those characters (although it seems the most likely scenario) or not.

@Blergh - Well at least regarding all the leaked information that we got so far regarding the deal with Netflix, Disney should have full control by now.

@Urubrodi - Hey Man, 🔴 making sense!!! We need estrogen and inclusivity!!! To hell with your love for comics, honor, tradition, accuracy, drama, consequences, etc. We want fun, funny, smartasses and cgi! Every hero wins with slight scarring, and any sense of danger must be diluted with Saved by the Bell one-liners (minus the laugh track)! Welcome to MARVEL NOW!

Currently in the comics, she is the holder of the Phoenix Force.

I wonder if they will give it to her in the MCU.

Who do you think should wield this power in the MCU? Because there has been a lot of characters who got it.

Also if Phoenix gets into the MCU an Avengers vs. X-Men event is a must-be.

@UXASIS - I think Jean Grey is the obvious choice for the host.

It's just one of those characters that is so unmistakably to the mantle, that no matter who takes up the mantle, it will always return to the original character on point or another.
UXASIS
UXASIS - 11/16/2021, 7:15 AM
@bkmeijer - I'd make her the first host, that's for sure.

But later it can latch unto someone else, like Mjölnir.

The fewer tho, the better. It shouldn't be that it can go to anyone, only those worthy of the mantle.

@UXASIS - agreed. Hope that when they eventually do Dark Phoenix, they do it right

It's not the show I'm the most interested in right now, but I admit that I am intrigued to what Marvel Studios is gonna do with it given how far less popular and well known the character is. Same with Shang-Chi, and that one worked for me

It would be great if Daredevil is Echo's target on the Show. So the Echo show is the first chapter in Daredevil's history in the MCU.

@marvel72 - And if it’s good, why should you care that there’s more diversity on the screen? There’s no down side to that.
marvel72
marvel72 - 11/16/2021, 2:47 PM
@SerKurtWagner - I have no problem with diversity on the screen, shit I want Storm and Bishop on the team in the movie. What I have a problem is when it's forced.
