The 2023 Emmy Award nominations were announced earlier today (via SFFGazette.com), and it might just be the biggest year for genre television yet.

Things were pretty quiet on the comic book/superhero front, but Ms. Marvel did pick up three nominations... though none in any big categories.

Kamala Khan's live-action debut was nominated for Outstanding Picture Editing For A Limited Series, Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, and Outstanding Music Composition For A Limited Series (Original Dramatic Score).

Disney+ Star Wars shows Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi did secure major nominations, along with HBO's House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

On the acting front, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey also picked up acting noms for The Last of Us, while Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman, who played Frank and Bill, respectively, in the standout "Long Long Time" episode, were both nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series.

In addition, Predator prequel movie, Prey, was nominated for Outstanding TV movie.

One notable "snub" (depending on who you ask, of course) was Prime Video's massive-budget The Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power.

Check out a full list of the major nominations below.

Watch the 75th Emmy Awards on Monday, Sept. 18 on Fox YV.

Ms. Marvel - One of the few D+ MCU shows that works for tv based on the story they're trying to tell, mostly.
Obi Wan - Cash grab

Cool to see Obi Wan nominated.

I know some here had their issues with it ( I myself felt some things could have been stronger or executed better) but overall I liked it.

I thought it was a good “bridge” story for Obi Wan from the end of Ep 3 to when we see him in A New Hope.

Sorry for the abrupt exit but I needed to get away from here but had been checking in more recently

I might not comment as much as I used to sometimes but I definitely will when I can

@dagenspear - I thought it showed Obi Wan’s arc of rebuilding from broken and weary to the Zen master we see in EP 4 well for the most part personally
dagenspear
dagenspear - 7/12/2023, 7:51 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I wouldn't argue that bridges him particularly, especially considering Obi wasn't particularly broken at the end of ROTS, I don't think how he acts at the end of ROTS is too different than how he's acting in ANH, and I don't think Obi has much character reason/learns anything to really reach that within the story of the show.

@dagenspear - that’s fair , I see what you mean

I do think his guilt over failing Anakin and the resolution to that adds more richness to the overall arc of the franchise imo

It just connected with me despite some of the shows faults.

@dracula - hey man

Can’t wait to talk Superman and Lois with it

Such a solid season with a hell of a cliffhanger!!.

S1 still edges it out as my favorite but 3 is close , probably the most emotional and definitely the most somber one so far.
dracula
dracula - 7/12/2023, 8:10 PM
@TheVisionary25 - i thought the ideas of the story were good but really everything was just so half baked

Needed a better actor for both inquisitors. Both failed to bring menace to their roles

Actress playing leia needed better direction

Would probably rate it above book of fett but still far below mando and andor
dracula
dracula - 7/12/2023, 8:14 PM
@TheVisionary25 - superman and lois season 3 was so good.

Got to wonder how season 4 will pick up.

Im betting Sam’s funeral and Superman and Doomsday will have not been seen since they went to the moon. Might get a few more bits if the fight

Then either the end the episode revealing what happened on the moon showing how it ended

Then We find out where Clark is episode 2
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 7/12/2023, 8:16 PM
@dracula - fair enough

I actually quite enjoyed Rupert Friend as The Grand Inquisitor

I get what you mean about Moses Ingram as Reva but I thought she still did well and while I didn’t dislike the character as much as some , I still thought she was alright

I think conceptually , the idea behind her character is very cool as an Inquisitor rising up the ranks so they can get close enough to Vader to kill him for the death of the people they cared and themes of becoming the thing you hate and how far are you willing to go could have been strong enough for their own story

I do think it being only 6 episodes hurts that character from not being as strong as she could have because her story isn’t given the time it deserves to be fleshed out that strongly unfortunately

However I think as a parallel to Obi Wan and Vader in some aspects in the show , she works well enough for me
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 7/12/2023, 8:17 PM
@dracula - I could see that

The budget and casts cut have me a bit concerned and do kinda bum me out but hopefully it works out for the best

@TheVisionary25 - Yeah, I agree. Also, my little girls (especially my oldest who is 7) enjoyed PRINCESS Leia (cause, ya know, Disney Princesses and such), so I was actually able to get them interested in watching something that I liked as well. On the other hand, trying to get them to watch "SI" tonight is going to be like that scene from "A Clockwork Orange".

Picking up on what you were saying about "Obi-Wan" being a bridge story, I agree but think that they could do one more season to cover the remaining decade before "ANH". They'd have to age Ewan a good amount to get him closer to Sir Alec, but portraying him somewhere in between where we leave him at the end of "Obi-Wan" and the beginning of "ANH" could work. The story would just have to be compelling enough to be worth watching.

The supporting actor drama category is so [frick]ing weird. Matt Smith and Jonathan Banks getting snubbed for cousin greg and will sharpe is just really strange. House of Dragon getting shut out entirely from acting was generally kind of surprising.
Jeremy Strong vs Kieran Culkin's gonna be tough though, but i'll give the edge to the eldest boy

@GhostDog - I can't believe we wound up with all 8 of the nominees coming from 2 shows from the same network. Emmys starting to feel like the HBO awards. I love Michael Imperioli, Chris Moltisanti the MF 🐐, but my god he didn't do anything all that special for White Lotus to justify his nom lmfao. Really only F. Murray Abrahamson makes any sense from the White Lotus supporting actors

@amesjazz - Completely agree. The first three seasons of BCS weren’t that strong, but to be honest, BB’s first season or two weren’t as strong either.

But with the final two seasons of BCS - especially the last one - it passed up BB in my book. And I love BB. Lived in Albuquerque when that show aired. Not only was it an amazing show, but it was so cool seeing all these local spots throughout the show.

I hope Odenkirk and co don’t get snubbed for the Succession folks.

@mountainman - BB is one of my favorite shows and the final season is very strong. BCS just had so much raw emotion. That Howard episode just broke me haha amazing writing.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/13/2023, 12:18 AM
@amesjazz - BB was the more action packed and exciting show. But yeah, the Howard episode was heartbreaking. A guy who kind of seemed like a villain in the early seasons just had this completely tragic ending. I felt like BB had Walt doing some really evil things. Jimmy was not a good dude, but I never saw him as completely evil. He was easier to root for, even at the end. Walt became the villain in later seasons and was no longer someone you could really cheer on.
