I've noticed a recurring trend where people clearly comment on articles without reading any of the, y'know, acutal story, and therefore make a whole bunch of comments (positive or negative) that are completely wrong because they didn't actually read the story in question in any sort of detail. So I figured I'd shed some light on a few aspects people seem to be confused on, on two key specific points. In particular I'd like to start with the recent story of Marvel Television adapting New Warriors as a half-hour comedy.
WHAT PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY READ: SQUIRREL GIRL TO LEAD NEW WARRIORS SERIES
Now, there was a lot of commentary yesterday about how it seemed unfair to the New Warriors that they would get shafted in favor of Squirrel Girl, a character who, while having gained popularity in recent years, has no real connection to the team itself. However, if you look at the actual story....
nowhere did it say Squirrel Girl was the lead.
The actual quote from the article at TVLine about the show:
Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (aka Squirrel Girl).
Now while the rest of the article did go on to talk at length about Squirrel Girl, nowhere in the article is it indicated that it's a Squirrel Girl show that also has the New Warriors: it's a New Warriors show where Squirrel Girl is a member of the team. Which wouldn't necessarily guarantee she is the lead (though it wouldn't rule it out, per se, either).
Now, for the big misconception I saw, that I don't see how the hell people kept repeating this ad nasueam without realising what was actually the story.
WHAT PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY READ: NEW WARRIORS SERIES TO AIR ON ABC
Now, this one is, to be quite frank, just a fundamental failure to actually read what was actually written in the article. There's no two ways about it. It's not airing on ABC. People saw that ABC Studios was producing it and immediately assumed that meant it was to air on ABC despite two key facts:
A: ABC Studios produces nearly every MCU show. INCLUDING the Netflix ones. The only ones not made by ABC Studios are the two being made by ABC Signature Studios, Cloak and Dagger and Runaways.
B: The text of the article clearly indicates there is almost ZERO CHANCE NEW WARRIORS ENDS UP AT ABC.
Both Marvel and ABC Studios declined to comment, but sources confirm that the half-hour project is currently being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets.
Like, literally right there in plain English. It's being looked at for cable or streaming service for a home. Which would literally automatically rule out it airing on ABC proper, since ABC is a not a cable channel in any sense of the word. It won't be on ABC. At all. In fact, by that story, it's far more likely it will wind up on Netflix itself than it ever being on ABC. Food for thought.
So what do you guys think? Would you like to see more articles like this, correcting misconceptions people draw from other stories? Do you have a new perspective on the story now that you actually looked at what was in it? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
