A lot of photos from the set of Secret Invasion have found their way online in recent weeks, with Nick Fury looking vastly different to how we remember in all of them. Rocking a beard and no eyepatch, it appears the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director has been through a lot since heading into outer space.
Now, Samuel L. Jackson has taken to Instagram to reveal a far more traditional look for the character, teasing plans to tap into his "Old School Fury" persona. We definitely have some questions, though. For starters, why doesn't he have his scar? Fury was clean-shaven when he lost his eye, so it's unlikely these are going to be scenes set prior to his first meeting with Captain Marvel.
It's possible Jackson just took this image prior to his scar makeup being applied, but either way, it seems safe to say we'll be spending some time with a younger Fury in Secret Invasion.
Talos impersonated him for a time in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but him trusting Mysterio ended up causing major problems for Peter Parker. This could be a flashback to that alien's time on Earth (we're sure it wasn't his only screw up) or a chance to revisit Fury's stint in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. The latter could even shed some light on how long the Skrulls have really been infiltrating Earth.
We know so little about Secret Invasion - including how it will tie into the events of The Marvels - that even speculating is difficult at this stage. It doesn't look like the series will be quite as epic as the comic book it's named after, but who knows what surprises Marvel Studios has in store for us with this one.
Secret Invasion is expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
