WANDAVISION Star Explains [SPOILER]'s Superhero Origin Story In The Latest Episode Of The Series

WandaVision has already done a fair bit to lay the groundwork for Phase 4, and one star of the Disney+ series has now opened up on their superhero origin story in the latest installment of the hit show!

WandaVision has delivered its fair share of surprises, with Monica Rambeau's superhero origin in last Friday's episode among them. Her third trip through the Hex has granted the S.W.O.R.D. agent powers of her own, and based on what we've seen thus far, Monica will soon suit up as Spectrum.

Reflecting on her early meetings with Marvel Studios in an interview with Marvel.com, actress Teyonah Parris says she was shown concept art depicting her transformation.

"I saw magical rays, and glimmers, and stuff on the storyboards, and it was my face! And I'm like, ‘How did they do this already?’"

"When I sat down and talked to the [WandaVision team], they explained it to me that through Monica's compassion, through her empathy, and her willingness to put her own body on the line, she sacrifices her own self for what she believes is the greater good [to go back to Westview]. And that happens by passing through this energy field too many times, essentially."

Parris went on to elaborate on how director Matt Shakman walked her through the scene, explaining that the death of Maria Rambeau is what pushes Monica through the Hex in that moment.

It doesn't sound like it was an easy sequence to film, however.

"When we filmed it, that was on a stage [against] a green screen," she says. "Basically, I had to wear each of my outfits, get tethered to a rope, and pull to have that motion. And so, there was that technical aspect of it. That was a little difficult, especially the ones in the space suit and then the stockings and heels. I just switched to sneakers!"

Monica's evolution into Spectrum is likely to continue when the character returns in Captain Marvel 2.

Nice to see she's becoming somewhat of a "break-out character" if you pardon the pun.

As much as I’ve been digging WandaVision, that origin scene was corny af.

Didn’t feel organic at all. I do like what they’ve been doing with Monica for the most part. Just didn’t think the forcefield walk was well executed.

@regularmovieguy -
Origins are tough. This one doesn't really copy the well worn script though.

@Goldboink

I thought it was rushed, and the voices she’s hearing inspiring her to keep pushing through was just weird imo. Maybe using her moms voice alone would work better, but Fury and Captain Marvel joining in was goofy and it kind of reminded me of Rise of Skywalker with all those “use the force, Rey” voiceovers.

That’s all. Really like the actress playing Monica, just felt that scene felt rushed and those voiceovers were a little cheesy.

@regularmovieguy - I agree. Her character is still great and what they've done with her has been really good but the actual origin scene was the wrong kind of corny.

@regularmovieguy - I think a problem with the origin is that it was anchored to a show where she's not the main character. I like Monica, but we're not given much about her to care THAT much for what it seems like Marvel is intending.

What should have been a triumphant and emotional moment for her kinda played to me like a distraction from the main plot of the show.

Now that we pretty much confirmation her powers come from the Hex, I wonder what this means for all others that passed through. The answer is probably mutants, but for some reason I doubt we'll actually see that

@bkmeijer -
Eternals will explain a lot about how superpowers exist and lay dormant until they are triggered somehow.

@Waddles - doubt an energy release from the exploding Hex will be the birth of the mutations (similar energy I think would've come of Thanos' snap, which I think would be a more likely candidate as genome activator), but I can see it lead to an increase in mutants

I’m all about Monica, I’m glad they are doing her powers already and it’s been cool to see the progression from when she was yeeted out of the hex to now. I said this the other day but I’m actually more excited to see Monica in Captain Marvel 2 than Carol Danvers at this point

@Ha1frican - right there with you. For me it might be because we see Monica go through the process of getting her powers, whereas we didn't really see that with Carol and I couldn't really care for a character that was powerful from the get-go.
