WHAT IF...? - Here Are The Returning MCU Actors From Today's Hilarious Episode (And Who Was Recast)

There were tonnes of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in today's episode of What If...?, but how many were voiced by the actors who brought them to life on the big screen? Spoilers follow...

Today's episode of What If...? asked "What If...Thor Was An Only Child?" and introduced us to a very different God of Thunder. Mostly comedic in nature, this seventh instalment of the animated series featured some fun twists and turns along with an epic battle between Party Thor and Captain Marvel.

There were lots of big names from the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, many of whom didn't actually have speaking roles.

However, Chris Hemsworth was back as Thor, and joining him were Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Kat Dennings (Darcy), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow), Taika Waititi (Korg), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif), Seth Green (Howard the Duck), Rachel House (Topaz), and Clancy Brown (Surtur).

As we're sure you'll agree, that's one heck of a cast!

As for the newcomers, we had Alexandra Daniels as Captain Marvel, Josette Eales as Frigga, David Chen as Hogun, Max Mittelman as Fandral, and Fred Tatasciore as Volstagg and Drax.

That's really not too bad compared to some previous episodes, and Daniels proved herself a great Carol Danvers in an episode that gave her just as much of the spotlight in some ways. Among the crazy antics we saw here was Darcy marrying Howard the Duck in Las Vegas, while a cliffhanger ending introduced a major new threat to this reality in the form of a Vision/Ultron hybrid.

The first four episodes of Star Wars Visions > most of What If...

Don’t know where to rank this one. Not at the bottom or the top, but aside from that not sure

Off topic (but still animated!): Anyone gonna mention how awful that newest He-Man is? Haha

Haha. No spoiler tag. Cool.
Came to see the voice cast. Ended up reading about a shotgun wedding and cliffhanger ending.

I didn't care for this episode. I understand it was just suppose to be silly fun, but just because that was what it was intended as doesn't make it a good episode.

There were characters present that shouldn't be or were very convenient for being there (Korg, Howard the Duck). The plot had no stakes and was absurd with the whole premise not really feeling like it related as to how Thor got to this state or why Loki would be his friend. The fight with Captain Marvel felt agenda driven to be honest especially with the "smile" line, although I'll given them at least some credit that she didn't just wipe the floor with him and call it a day. Overall just another disappointing episode. At this point I can't wait for the real shows to come back as I haven't cared for roughly half of the episodes so far. (Carter, Killmonger, and now Party Thor)

@FearTheLiving - Why do people call Captain Marvel being powerful an agenda? I'm not a fan of her being THEE number one in the MCU but Mar-Vell, and really Carol have historically been on the higher playing field, certainly at Thor's level, so why is MCU Captain Marvel being strong considered agenda driven??

FearTheLiving - 9/22/2021, 4:37 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - I didn't say her being strong was an agenda, I think that scene specifically was. You have one of the strongest Avengers starting a fight with her by saying she should smile then she handedly beats him around for a bit and making his strongest abilities be completely ignored. This is very reminiscent of the whole don't tell women to smile controversy and something that surrounded the Captain Marvel movie itself.

I also went on to say that they controlled themselves because they made it into a no clear winner situation at the end instead of her just decimating him. That being said the episode was pretty bad even if you remove the entirety of that subplot so it's not like I'm just picking on Captain Marvel, it was just a bad episode that overall felt very forced and goofy.

@OmegaBlack13 - Cause they have been forcing her to the front 🤣, they even ruined Marvel Vs Capcom in the way.

@FearTheLiving - An Episode that was meant to be funny "felt very forced and goofy" was not for you in the first place?
I don't know what you were expecting of this, but it's not their fault they don't meet yours.
Sure, Thor was not the super-human being "strongest avenger" you dudes see him and yourselves, but he was a kind of like a human being.
And an odd-ball- I loved it!

@CapObvious - "An Episode that was meant to be funny "felt very forced and goofy" was not for you in the first place?"

Was I giving any other opinion other than my own? I never said others couldn't enjoyed it and even said it was intended to be silly but even then "I" found it a bad episode.

What? I see him and myself? The hell are you on about?

This was an awful episode. Like legitimately bad. It was so over the top literally no creative decision felt logical, it was just 40 minutes of ham, and not even particularly good ham. I understand humor is subjective but that was just a shit episode.

@ElricReturns - agreed. This is by far the worst episode.

Who won the fight between Thor and Captain Marvel?
nmasterofnaught
nmasterofnaught - 9/22/2021, 7:27 AM
@Ryguy88 - Seeing as this is a party Thor & Captain Marvel is suped up on Infinity power (they should have used the purple power stone to give her powers, but I guess plot device locations, etc).

CM is clearly stronger... but she can't lift Mjolnir, so it was a mostly pointless, stupid & silly/juvenile fight. Still mostly funny & entertaining imo, which I'm guessing, was the entire point of the episode.
pharoahe22
pharoahe22 - 9/22/2021, 9:56 AM
@Ryguy88 - Technically Thor won the fight. It was pretty equal, even though they made it seem like CM had a little more power. But Thor kind of pinned her where she couldn’t get up unless he wanted her to…so by WWE rules, he won the fight
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 9/22/2021, 10:00 AM
@nmasterofnaught -  I figured as much.

They really seemed to go for it huh? Taking this big, dumb oaf "party-Thor" from where he is in the MCU, a big.....dumb oaf. Well at least THIS time hes weaker than CM and gets his ass handed to him.....wait..
nmasterofnaught
nmasterofnaught - 9/22/2021, 1:22 PM
@Ryguy88 - I don't think Party Thor was played dumb - at least that wasn't the joke in my interpretation, but I was surprised how seriously the fight was given that this Thor seemed more interested in partying then fighting.

I'm guessing the fight is the equivalent playground "who would win in a fight between..."

This show (especially this episode) strikes me as being very child friendly. Why not? Disney must view Marvel films as a good way to increase merchandising sales (Disney Cars franchise makes way more merchandising sales).

xHollywoodx - 9/22/2021, 7:24 AM
Well that was fun. I have really enjoyed this show. I would love the episodes to be slightly longer or have greater impact. I would love if each of these episodes spun off into their own seperate series. Or maybe Marvel Studios needs to make a alternative MCU cartoon series expanding.
nmasterofnaught
nmasterofnaught - 9/22/2021, 7:33 AM
@xHollywoodx - Plot holes galore in this one I think. Mantis with GotG (in 2009), etc, but it was silly fun! So of course I liked it.

I'm of the belief that episodes are being edited to be shorter (real gaps in emotional complexity, imo) & sillier to draw-in/appeal to younger audiences. Which let's me go "eh it's a kids show, enjoy it for the weird variations" & be pleasantly surprised when it goes dark (where What If comics have gone).

This episode was fantastic and so much fun; definitely my second favorite of the series so far. Made me even more hyped for Love and Thunder and us seeing Jane and Thor on screen together again.

after so many episodes of universes being destroyed, Avengers dying left and right several times and so many downer endings it was nice to have a funny episode. I mean, come on, Surtur hitting on the Statue of Liberty? Darcy drunk-marrying Howard the Duck in Las Vegas? that sh*t was hilarious.
nice little fight between Cap Marvel and Thor too, even if nobody really won.
and I guess the big bad of the season finale has finally shown his face, or rather, faces.

I don’t understand all the negativity. I thought it was hilarious and I enjoyed the big summer blockbuster version of an 80’s party comedy. I couldn’t care less if there were plot holes or inconsistencies.
