WHAT IF...? Brings Back A Familiar Villain And Teases The Watcher's Role In The MCU - SPOILERS

Today's episode of What If...? fully embraced Doctor Strange's horror roots, and that resulted in arguably the best instalment yet. Now, we're taking a much closer look at a couple of major reveals...

In today's episode of What If...?, we visited a reality where Doctor Strange lost Christine Palmer in the crash that destroyed his hands. While his story initially played out the same way (this Sorcerer Supreme defeated Dormammu, for example), it veered off when he decided to use the Time Stone to bring back the woman he loved.

Unfortunately, Christine's death is an "Absolute Point" in time that cannot be changed in this universe. Doing so would risk the very fabric of reality itself, but that doesn't stop Strange.

Instead, he absorbs the powers of countless dark beings over the course of centuries, with the final one being that massive squid-like creature we first saw Captain Carter battling in the premiere. Strange previously tried to bargain with the monster (which definitely didn't work), and absorbing its power is seemingly what tips him over the edge; again, we have to wonder whether this is Shuma Gorath.

That Multiversal villain is rumoured to be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' big bad, so perhaps this animated series is setting the stage for that movie?

Time will tell, but What If...? also saw The Watcher become more involved in events than ever before. As Strange's reality collapses around him, he pleads with the mysterious character and describes him as a "God." The Watcher refutes that point and declines to interfere in what's happening. Something tells us that will change during the second half of the season, but he leaves Strange to his fate here.

It's a grim ending to this story, but the trailers have confirmed this Strange is going to return as he's been shown alongside both Captain Carter and the God of Thunder Variant dubbed "Party Thor."

it was certainly dark for Marvel to pull a Gendo Ikari with the good ol' Doc.

It looked like one of the absorbed entities was the Horned King from the Black Cauldron :)

I really dug this episode but the whole point of Strange going to Kamar-Taj was because his hands were [frick]ed.

And if her death was an absolute point in time then why didn’t it happen in the main timeline?

@regularmovieguy - maybe it was an absolute point on that specific timeline.

@Spidey91 - Yes, that's what I thought. Doctor Strange is destined to become the best of the sorcerers, as pointed out by the The Ancient One in the movie. That's probably an Absolute Point in many universes.

@regularmovieguy - It's an absolute point for that Strange

That Strange is only a sorcerer because of Christine's death, so he cannot use sorcery to undo the death that caused him to learn sorcery in the first place. It would cause a paradox

@lordSTALE - Why did he want to become a sorcerer, then? Did he also loose his hands in this timeline? That was odd.

@regularmovieguy - He never asked her in the main timeline. In this one he did, and once doing so it was apparently "fixed". So...if you like a gal, be absolutely sure otherwise universal annihilation. No pressure.

@KnifeWasTooSlow - I suggest you rewatch it. He didn't lose his hands. He went to Kamar-Taj to try and discover magic to resurrect Christine. It was explained in the episode. They even went out of their way to specifically point out that her death is what sets the events in motion for him to become Sorcerer Supreme in his timeline.

@regularmovieguy - Like others have pointed out, her death is an absolute point on this specific timeline/universe.

In our main timeline, the absolute point is his damaged hands.

In both scenarios, it is the catalyst to learn sorcery, and sorcery cannot repair what was lost. Strange’s hands never heal in our timeline. Christine stays dead in this variant timeline.

@regularmovieguy - I guess absolute points are just like nexus events, just with a more confusing name.

The way I took it, is that a certain things needs to happen for a timeline to have a certain predicted. The Ancient One looked in the future of the timeline where Strange took Christina with him, whereas if she looked in the timeline Strange went alone, he had to have his hands broken (since there's no Christina to die at that point) for him to seek out the mystic arts.

Atleast, that's my two cents

My only problem is that they don't explain how Strange survived without Christie to resuscitate during the astral plane fight in this timeline.

@FinnishDude - the simplest answer to that would be that didn't happen in this version.

These Disney+ shows are dealing with heavy matters. I thought this would be a bit lighter since it’s animated but nope. Marvel’s trying to send people to therapy

@SpaceAgent - watched it when it dropped at 3am and when he was absorbing those creatures I was scared in some of those sequences. Also dang Christine Palmer didn’t deserve to die so many times

Props to Marvel for ending it the way they did. Even if you don't like the show, you at least have to give them credit for this ending.

The ending was cool but I was bored for the vast majority of this episode. The idea of “this movie but very slightly different” has already worn thin for me.

Spidey91 - 9/1/2021, 9:41 AM
@Ha1frican - but this isn't "Doctor Strange but slightly different". maybe 2-3 minutes are basically a recap, yes, but the rest is completely different, even if it has a couple similar beats.
PantherKing

@Spidey91 - I wouldn’t bother bro

@Spidey91 - It was different but not completely. It was the same note as the first movie of him trying to overcome his hubris just this time he failed. I dont know I liked it but this show is just not hitting with me like I hoped. The first two episodes I really liked but it’s starting to get dull for me overall in a way the live action shows didnt
