WHAT IF...? Head Writer A.C. Bradley Confirms Episodes Were Longer Prior To COVID; Explains Cliffhangers

What If...? Head Writer A.C. Bradley has opened up on how the pandemic led to the length of episodes being shortened, while also shedding some light on what the deal with all those cliffhanger endings is.

What If...? hasn't generated quite as much buzz as Marvel Studios' live-action Disney+ TV shows, and one major complaint from fans has been what feels like truncated runtimes for the episodes. The seemingly random cliffhangers haven't gone over very well with everyone, either, though the hope is that they might be addressed somehow in the final two episodes.

Head Writer A.C. Bradley commented on both points during a recent interview with Deadline

"What If...? comics ended abruptly and really dark to prove that the main timeline is the better timeline," she explained to the trade. "We’ve used that as our reason to cut stories off a little bit shorter. All these episodes could have been 45 minutes. Some of the animatics were 35 minutes, but due to animation and Covid, we cut them a little bit shorter than we would have liked."

Bradley is not wrong, though whether that concept works as well on television is another matter. The "Marvel Zombies" episode, for example, was a lot of fun, but wrapping up with an undead Thanos wielding the Infinity Stones made for somewhat unsatisfying viewing. We're certainly not expecting happy endings every time, but such a big reveal felt deserving of more than a single scene.

The executive producer later mentioned that the MCU has, to some extent, been a detriment, as What If...? is seemingly unable to introduce any new characters. "While we’re staying true to the comics that way, we couldn’t pull many original storylines because the mandate was 'Use the MCU characters,'" Bradley notes.

"For Marvel Zombies, we went back to the original run and pulled some of the storylines from that because it was so much fun and it’s a huge cult classic," she added. "So, when it came to adapting, you pick the best parts, but you can’t show every moment."

What If...? has just two episodes left in its first season, and the second batch is expected to arrive on Disney+ next year. We don't know how - or if - the stage is going to be set for what comes next a couple of weeks from now, but Jeffrey Wright has previously teased a deepening of The Watcher's relationship with Captain Carter.

Explains how rushed or cramped some stories seem to be.

So far id say they still managed to pull the stories off to their potential about half the time

So wait did they condense episodes or just cut off the end of the script, cause some feel like one, some feel like the other

My biggest gripe is definitely the run times. I've liked to loved all the episodes, but it always felt like it ended too quickly.

Sucks that this played a role, even though it makes sense. Can't wait for season 2.

Some of these episodes really suffered from the shorter runtime. The zombie episode esp felt like it should have been a good 10-15 minutes longer. The pacing is rushed on all of these though.

Figures. Came off especially jarring how abruptly the Killmonger episode ended.

I'm very interested in seeing what these first shows would've looked like if COVID never interrupted things. Not all productions benefit from a quick filming schedule, but it sounds in the case of last year a lot of things were reworked or cut due to constraints rather than someone looking at what was filmed and figuring out how to (potentially) make them better

I wonder how much this factors into how overly fast some of these episodes are being paced

@OmegaDaGrodd - this feels like a bs answer
Many animation movies/shows were done fully remote...I personally don’t work in animation. I work in design and production and have not gone into an office in two years. I do have many friends who are in the animation field including ones who work for Disney, the entire proud family reboot was done remotely along with several upcoming shorts. This seems like this show was pushed up to fill a gap because the live shows were delayed.

@drbong -

Idk man, I feel like we kinda need a lot more detail and personal experience working in the particular field during a pandemic before we start claiming "bs" and giving completely alternative guesses as to why things are the way they are

@OmegaDaGrodd - I stated i work in a the arts but not in animation. I know specifically though people that work for Disney animation that full series were completed in lockdown along with shorts I cannot comment on anything else animated for Disney because they did not work on it though they worked on plenty of other projects for Netflix, dreamworks animation, to sesame studios all during lockdown and have continued to work remotely. I do know their have been some scheduling issues just like their have been with products/production especially to fill gaps left by bigger franchises/releases being delayed by covid.

Didnt Civil War get like 3 what ifs showing better outcomes than the main timeline?

I am enjoying this series so far despite a rushed pace and those cliffhangers. Honestly I think I enjoy this more than WandaVision and TFATWS although I will admit those shows have better pacing. Knowing that the pandemic was a little responsible helps a little and hopefully maybe for future seasons they'll probably make longer episodes.

I kinda like how they end on a cliffhanger to let the audience fill in some things, but they're a little to fast-paced for my liking.

So yeah, the episodes should be longer. Not because I want more story, but because I wish they spent more time on certain moments and didn't have such fast talking dialogue.

I don't really mind the cliffhangers, cause at least the base story of each episodes were more or less concluded in the end.

The Killmonger episode pisses me off, cause it felt incomplete, felt like it ended just before the third act of the main story is going to start.
