WHAT IF...? Sets The Stage For An Epic Finale And Finally Reveals The Show's Big Bad - SPOILERS

What If...?'s penultimate episode set the stage for a huge finale next Wednesday, and we're now taking a closer look at how things played out for both Ultron and The Watcher in today's epic instalment...

In today's episode of What If...?, we visited a reality where Ultron managed to make The Vision's body his own. After gaining the power of the Mind Stone, the villain unleashed his master plan and made short work of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Later, when Thanos came calling, he sliced the Mad Titan in half and upgraded himself with all six of the Infinity Stones.

Black Widow and Hawkeye, however, remain on Earth trying to find a way to stop Ultron, who enacts a plan that sees him wipe out almost every sentient being in existence across the cosmos.

Achieving his mission leaves the android directionless...until he suddenly achieves a higher state of consciousness and is able to reach through realities after hearing The Watcher's narration. With that, Ultron has access to the entire Multiverse (portrayed as a series of prisms here) and ends up battling an armoured Uatu through a series of different realities, including one where Steve Rogers is being sworn in as President of the United States in the present day!

Black Widow finds a way to defeat the villain, but not when he's in a different universe. A desperate Watcher, meanwhile, teams up with Doctor Strange Supreme and starts to put a team together.

That's where we leave things, but it's clear now that the Guardians of the Multiverse are going to assemble next week in a bid to put an end to Ultron. The Watcher has broken his oath, of course, and it will be interesting to see whether any of this ends up factoring into live-action MCU plans post-What If...?

This final 2 parts make me wonder what the missing 10th ep was. Feels like this season will come to a close next ep, unless it’s a 3 parter

@Cap1 - It was a "What If... Tony Landed on Sakarr When He Took the Middle Through the Wormhole?"

@Cap1 - It was supposed to come before the Ultron episodes

They weren't going to cut either part of the finale, so they cut a middle episode

That episode sucked.

Should have condensed the Watcher/Ultron stuff to an end of episode tease and give us more in the actual What If world

When the episode started i expected it to be a lot better but they just kept cutting away from the universe we came to see

@dracula - I trust your judgement. Haven’t watched yet but I’ve thought the entire series has been hot garbage thus far so not surprised.

@dracula - I respect your opinion, I don't disregard it in any way, but I couldn't disagree more. I feel this was the second strongest episode only behind Evil Strange. This episode did something original every step of the way, the chemistry of all the characters was great, I really enjoyed the premise and Nat and Clint surviving this situation together, I liked the inclusion of Zola and I liked the green Zola bot and Nat donning Red Guardians shield, Clinton sacrifice was epic visually a played really well parallel to Nats sacrifice in Endgame, the Watcher suiting up and battling Ultron across the Multiverse was dope!!!, President Steve Rogers was amazing, the comedy wasn't in your face but subtle and almost grumpy just like Nat and Clint and I enjoyed that style more, the cliffhanger got me hyped for the final episode.

Overall not really a single thing bummed me out this week. Only reason I consider Evil Strange still the best episode is that episode absolutely NAILED the emotional side of story telling on top of being a visual masterpiece and really really cool. Evil Strange and this episode are what this shows potential is personified.

I'm hyped for next episode.

Actually I do have one and only one gripe... this episode would have been literal perfection and possibly my favorite episode had they gotten James Spader back as Ultron, as I feel this episode WAS the Ultron we deserved... and had Spader been the voice delivering THESE lines..... oh boy... oh boy oh boy... but alas.

@ElricReturns - I Had no problem with the creative decisions of the nat and clint story, just wish we got more with them. These worlds are what we watch to see.

The fight with watcher and ultron was cool, but really either could have been its own episode, the Mad Natasha story and God Ultron story

@dracula - man honestly, I wish What If and Star Wars Visions were just back door pilots, because several of these new concepts deserve fleshing out over a long form narrative structured specifically for that story. But to fund all of these projects... it'll never happen. But all these great new ideas deserve to be mini series as a minimum.

@ElricReturns - agree, would be nice to at least see one expanded into maybe a 13 episode story.
