We first met Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, and the character soon became a fan-favorite and ended up returning in the Agent Carter One-Shot. She'd later get her own, short-lived TV series on ABC, though that doesn't appear to be considered canon as it wasn't mentioned in the recent Marvel Legends special shared on Disney+.
An elderly version of Peggy was killed off in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, while her story seemingly reached its end in Avengers: Endgame when the World War II veteran was reunited with Steve in the 1940s.
Asked by USA Today whether that was the "perfect" ending for the character, Atwell responded: "Structurally, yes. The satisfying delivery of their return to one another and the eventual dance is an appropriate closing point to their romance. Of course, there was a lot more going on for Peg: She would have been living a full life, which was not touched upon, and I understand why. She would need a lot more screen time to explore that."
Of course, in today's episode of What If...?, Atwell plays an alternate universe version of Peggy who takes the Super Soldier Serum and becomes Captain Carter.
With rumours swirling that we might see a version of this hero in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the actress admits that playing a live-action version is of interest. "[The] possibility of Peggy getting an opportunity to take the helm in a far more ambitious way does excite me," she says. "I would invest fully in a process where the right creative team was put together to pave the way for Peggy to tap into the cultural consciousness of today and become a modern heroine of our times. I wouldn’t settle for less than what she and the fans deserve."
It sure sounds like she might know something about Captain Carter's MCU future, eh?
We'll have to wait and see what happens, but the response to the character was overwhelmingly positive before What If...? even arrived on Disney+, so there's bound to be a demand for this.
