EL CAMINO: A BREAKING BAD MOVIE Spoiler-Free Review; "A Perfect Epilogue To The Greatest TV Show Of All-Time"

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is now on Netflix, but does this sequel to the iconic TV series deliver a satisfying follow-up to what's come before? Yes, and you can find out how after the jump...

Breaking Bad ended in 2013, but the massive success of the AMC series meant we didn't have long to wait before returning to that world. Better Call Saul launched in 2015 and while the prequel has occasionally touched on what came next for Saul Goodman following the series finale, the stories of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman came to a close with that episode, and we were left to decide for ourselves what might have become of the latter as he sped away from the compound where his former mentor drew his final breath.

As we saw in the trailers, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie picks up right where Breaking Bad ended six years ago and the less you know going into this sequel, the better. We can, however, tell you that it fills in some big gaps from the final season while also delving into what came next for Jesse after he made his escape from that cage thanks to Walt's "sacrifice."

As you might expect, the spotlight is put on Aaron Paul for almost the entirety of this movie and he delivers a powerful, compelling performance which is undeniably awards worthy. The actor attempted to enter the blockbuster realm with the likes of Need for Speed and Exodus: Gods and Kings in 2014 and, unfortunately, the response to those hurt his career at the time. Luckily, El Camino should put him back on the map in a major way before he arrives in Westworld next year and it serves as a reminder of what an amazing talent he is. Jesse Pinkman isn't the man he once was after everything he went through, and Paul does a phenomenal job portraying that, while never failing to remind us that he is still the same character we spent all those years following.

El Camino is a little more cinematic than the series it follows (which is appropriate given plans for it to have a limited theatrical release), but it takes no time at all for us all to fit back into this world and that's a credit to writer and director Vince Gilligan. The Breaking Bad franchise remains in good hands with its creator, and the trademark black humour and inventive visuals that became a staple of the series return here in some unique and exciting ways.

Given how perfect Breaking Bad's ending was, a sequel was a risky venture and could have easily ruined the legacy of the beloved series. Thankfully, it delivers in every respect and serves as a satisfying conclusion to this story and a perfect epilogue that addresses all the lingering questions we've had for the past six years, while still proving that it's a worthy addition to the world of Breaking Bad.

Should there be more movies? There could be, but this effort is an absolute masterpiece and with an ending this perfect, it honestly feels like the right time to call it quits. Well, aside from that long overdue final season of Better Call Saul!

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is a perfect epilogue to the greatest TV show of all-time, and an incredible movie in its own right. Aaron Paul's tour de force performance is utterly jaw-dropping and perhaps the best work of his career.

Just watched it earlier. Was in tears during the final few moments before the film ended.

Watching it tonight....expectations couldn’t be higher. Breaking Bad might be the GOAT but Better Call Saul is right up there in quality.

They’re both so good.

“ Well, aside from that long overdue final season of Better Call Saul!”

FYI I think we have at least two seasons of Better Call Saul left...nothings been confirmed that the next season will be the last.

@regularmovieguy - yeah I can almost guarantee you s5 won't be the last for BCS. For one thing, they did an announcement for the end of shooting over a month ago, and in an interview from just a couple days ago with Gilligan talking about the movie, when referencing BCS (which, he has even less current regular involvement with it than I thought he did, I know he doesn't "run" it but he's not even a mainstay in the writers room) he talked about how it really is Peter Gould's series. Gould invented the character himself for that debut s2 episode, after all. But yeah he remarked that Gould will basically be telling him how BCS ends, as in that's still a future event.

That being said, I hope I doesn't go more than the 6 seasons. I love the show, but it just doesn't seem right a spinoff (and one that's not categorically superior) should last even longer than the original. Even though BCS runs on much less plot than BB did, it still can very easily run too long. Not to mention Jonathan Banks already looks like he's about 85 lol

@CaptCoulson

Absolutely. Agreed on most points 👍🏻

I think 2 more seasons would be just enough time to wrap up Saul’s pre and post-Breaking Bad storylines.

They may even break S5 up into two halves like they did with BB.

@Lizardking310 - You can watch all the TV in the world, and none of it will be better than Breaking Bad.

@Lizardking310 - Nah, it could've been GoT, but because of that abysmal last season, the greatest show ever right now is probably Breaking Bad.
CaptCoulson
CaptCoulson - 10/11/2019, 6:19 AM
@Lizardking310 - I'm honestly not sure what I would flat out call "greatest TV show of all time". I still probably consider The West Wing ultimately my *favorite* of all time (& I'll argue as much as anyone else that the last 3 seasons are nowhere near as good as the first 4).

but I have to say, I didn't start watching Breaking Bad til way late, I was one of the large group who caught up via Netflix gradually. I watched the first 4.5 seasons over probably no more than a 6 month period, I finished a couple months before 5b debuted, so saw that live. I heard CONSTANT praise about this thing before I started, for awhile. And it's one of the few entertainment experiences in my life that managed to live up to pretty much ALL the hype that came til I finally began. There's not any one stretch (much less season) that's even mediocre, much less poor. Most people probably regard season 1 as the "worst", but I was still captivated as hell doing those first 6-7 episodes (that got shortened because the writers strike).

I watched it pretty much right away since I was awake from kinda being sick. FYI -- BE VERY WARY ON TWITTER. It's a full 2 hours long and went online 3am EST, by 5:30am there were already tons of people using the official hashtag openly posting about spoilers and screenshots.

All I'll say here w/o doing spoilers yet, it wasn't entirely what I expected it would be. That's not a fault, not necessarily, overall I feel very positive about it, but there's one particular major thing I was rather surprised by.
And I never had a problem with the movie itself happening once I heard about it, because really, as epic as the series legit was, Jesse was pretty much as much of the show as Walt was, and he didn't get NEARLY as definitive an ending. You think about it, sure it was glorious Jesse got to escape the compound with Jack's crew dead given what he'd been thru, but that was far from guaranteeing him much safety or respite.

Yes there are several familiar BB-related people, this is not news. I won't name all the specific ones, but one I was a little surprised was NOT included, and there's one that is that I never would've guessed.

@CaptCoulson - I just never understood why people spoil stuff like that. It makes no sense to me. "let me show everyone how cool I am by putting up a screen shot of the best parts of the movie". It's so weird
CaptCoulson
CaptCoulson - 10/11/2019, 7:01 AM
@MyCoolYoung - I mean, much as I may hate to say it, in one way I think we have to accept by now this is the nature of the beast with Twitter, and it was possible to be fully viewed at that point so I certainly can't make a logical argument they're inherently wrong or not allowed to talk about it.
But like, it literally JUST PASSED being possible to view it, by minutes lol I even said on there I think, like the sun's not even up in the east yet (at the time). of most of the people I know and talk to, I knew I was in the minority of seeing that immediately because like I said I was up all night anyway, and it can be a cool feature of Netflix that stuff goes up just after midnight on "premiere day". But surely well over 50% of the total audience won't be viewing it until at least roughly dinner time tonight. well though also to be fair now I think about it, I don't think I saw anyone openly posting spoilers that didn't also use the "El Camino" hashtag in their tweet, so there's that, it did provide sort of a shield.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 10/11/2019, 10:02 AM
@CaptCoulson - oh I agree. That type of stuff is here to stay. We can discuss the films and be excited for them but a little consideration can be had. As you said mere minutes had passed and spoiler pictures were already posted that's wherein the problem lies

Breaking Bad was good till Gus died, after that Walt became a complete moron. Will check out the movie, but the show shouldn't be anywhere near a top 10 greatest shows list.

I have a soft spot for Doctor Who, But without a doubt if I'm looking over the shows objectively Breaking Bad is the best show I've ever seen on TV. I've been trying to get through Smallville lately, and it's going to be nice going back to BB in this movie, as it's like moving up from Off brand soda to fine wine.

@MyCoolYoung - Man at least finish Breaking Bad before seeing this movie. This is an epilouge to the show, it will either make no sense to you or just make you sad cause my guess is that it's going to spoil A LOT.

Watch the show first!!!!

You have to...I haven’t seen the movie but I imagine the payoff is well worth the ride.
