Extraction took us all by surprise when it hit Netflix last year, and director Sam Hargrave - who served as a stunt coordinator on everything from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Avengers: Endgame - put himself on the map with that in a big way. Joe Russo penned the screenplay, of course, and previously revealed that he's in the midst of working on the sequel's script.
It didn't take long for Netflix to announce a follow-up thanks to record-breaking viewing figures, and when Collider recently caught up with Hargrave, they were able to get an update on Extraction 2.
While COVID-19 has slowed pretty much everything down in Hollywood, the filmmaker confirmed that the current plan is for this sequel (starring Chris Hemsworth) to begin shooting as soon as this Fall.
"[That's] still the case, COVID-pending. That's kind of everyone's little caveat right now, but we're moving forward on it as if we're shooting in the fall," Hargrave confirmed. "Joe [Russo] is still finalizing the script. We're all excited to read it. I've read different iterations, but I'm excited to read what he turns in. We're all looking forward to getting back in the saddle and hopefully bringing another action-packed adventure in the 'Extraction' universe."
This is definitely a positive update, and while we still don't know whether this is a prequel or sequel, this is a franchise with a tonne of potential that Netflix is likely to revisit for years to come. As a result, Hemsworth has another action series to play the lead in, that should give even Bond a run for his money! If nothing else, it certainly feels like Extraction is a fitting replacement for the Bourne series.
