Jupiter's Legacy is now streaming on Netflix, and while the show's "Volume 1" left us with some unanswered questions (which we're hoping will be addressed in a second season), there was something, in particular, that grabbed our attention. We are, of course, talking about the costumes!
Those were created by Costume Designer Lizz Wolf, and her previous credits include movies like The Expendables, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and Creed II.
We'll share our full interview with you a little later this week, but in this excerpt, Lizz talks specifically about creating Brandon's look in the series. On the page, he was a little more Gothic, and didn't have a superhero alter-ego as "Paragon," so his TV appearance had to be created from scratch. The Costume Designer explains that while the live-action Brandon is attempting to follow in his father's footsteps, Paragon could be an "interim" design that evolves into what we saw in the comics.
"Well, there are a couple of characters that are brand new. They're all next-generation superheroes and having to come up with Brandon was a bit tricky just because he obviously had to integrate well into that story," Wolf explained over the phone last week. "We had no information about what that super suit would look like, and [there's] a very iconic look with him in the source material where he's got this Nic Cage thing going on."
"This is an interim costume to really reflect the struggle with him and his dad and that he's trying very hard to be the son and wear the uniform to please his father. I think this is that transitional step whereas Petra, who has taken the mantle from her father The Flair, is also a completely new suit," the Costume Designer continued. "[Brandon] took a little more doing than the other costumes, certainly, because in the roundtable with Mark Millar and Netflix and the producers, it took some time to find his space. There were plenty of iterations done, I can say that. The next generation in our story is extremely important and very relevant."
Brandon was definitely one of the most interesting characters in Jupiter's Legacy, and that Paragon design looked phenomenal on screen. We'd definitely like to see him head down a darker path, though, especially if that means embracing his unique look from Mark Millar and Frank Quietly's comics.
Lizz mentions The Flare above, and you can check out some of her designs and the work that went into creating that costume below (and make sure to give her a follow on Instagram while you're at it!).
