JUPITER'S LEGACY Costume Designer On Reinventing Brandon And Creating Paragon's Costume (Exclusive)

Jupiter's Legacy Costume Designer Lizz Wolf (The Expendables) has explained the decision to reinvent Brandon's appearance for the Netflix series, while detailing the hero's transformation into Paragon...

Jupiter's Legacy is now streaming on Netflix, and while the show's "Volume 1" left us with some unanswered questions (which we're hoping will be addressed in a second season), there was something, in particular, that grabbed our attention. We are, of course, talking about the costumes!

Those were created by Costume Designer Lizz Wolf, and her previous credits include movies like The ExpendablesPacific Rim: Uprising, and Creed II

We'll share our full interview with you a little later this week, but in this excerpt, Lizz talks specifically about creating Brandon's look in the series. On the page, he was a little more Gothic, and didn't have a superhero alter-ego as "Paragon," so his TV appearance had to be created from scratch. The Costume Designer explains that while the live-action Brandon is attempting to follow in his father's footsteps, Paragon could be an "interim" design that evolves into what we saw in the comics.

"Well, there are a couple of characters that are brand new. They're all next-generation superheroes and having to come up with Brandon was a bit tricky just because he obviously had to integrate well into that story," Wolf explained over the phone last week. "We had no information about what that super suit would look like, and [there's] a very iconic look with him in the source material where he's got this Nic Cage thing going on."

"This is an interim costume to really reflect the struggle with him and his dad and that he's trying very hard to be the son and wear the uniform to please his father. I think this is that transitional step whereas Petra, who has taken the mantle from her father The Flair, is also a completely new suit," the Costume Designer continued. "[Brandon] took a little more doing than the other costumes, certainly, because in the roundtable with Mark Millar and Netflix and the producers, it took some time to find his space. There were plenty of iterations done, I can say that. The next generation in our story is extremely important and very relevant."

Brandon was definitely one of the most interesting characters in Jupiter's Legacy, and that Paragon design looked phenomenal on screen. We'd definitely like to see him head down a darker path, though, especially if that means embracing his unique look from Mark Millar and Frank Quietly's comics.

Lizz mentions The Flare above, and you can check out some of her designs and the work that went into creating that costume below (and make sure to give her a follow on Instagram while you're at it!).

Made it through 3 episodes and the show feels like a parody of the CW shows

I enjoyed the show. Pacing was off and slow at times, but overall I thought it was pretty good. It didn't reinvent the wheel or anything,, but was entertaining enough. I've always enjoyed origin stories the most, so that was the part that kept me interested most. My biggest question was how did the villains get their powers? Were they descendants of the boat crew that got zapped with the energy surge?

Horrible.

As a fan of the comics, I don't understand why they would change so much original content & brutality just to conform to such basic superhero tropes and beats.

Volume One of the series should have outright been a mix of both Volume Ones of Legacy & Circle.

I'll still be back for Volume Two, but that's only because I'm a fiend for content, especially comic book shtuffs.

I honestly got bored by episode 3. I do like the fight scenes though, but everything else is just zzzzz...

Weird costumes. Better than the CW costumes but not as good as somethings like Titans or the Marvel shows. They're just.....okay....ish.

The costumes are the worst part of this show

@Himura - Like you and many other people here in the comments have pointed out, some aspects of the show (costumes, wigs, fake beards, make up, vfx, fight choreographies, etc) just look too bad and cheap.

Sometimes the show looked good enough, but too many times it just looked awful.

The Witcher had a similar problem, sometimes it just didn't look good enough, some wigs and make up and vfx looked like a bad Hercules/Xena remake instead of having the GOT level of quality that should be expected from a show like this.

I certainly hope The Sandman adaptation looks much better than both of these Netflix shows, more like other quality and good looking Netflix shows like The Haunting of House Hill.

I watched this whole thing in one sitting and as much as I like superheroes this show was pretty bad. I like anything out of the cookie cutter ideas but this wasn’t it. The fight scene at the beginning was the best part but even that was just entertaining.

Found the 1920's stuff more interesting than the modern day storyline. They definitely need to improve the writing when it comes to the flow of the story if there's a Season 2.

I never read the comic before watching, so I didn't have anything to compare it to. It had issues to be certain, the old people make up and wigs are God awful and the worst part of the show. Some of the costume designs are too much too.

But over all this show did more right than wrong for me. There were some conversations about the fundamentals of being a hero that I absolutely love in the comics and they did a great job addressing here. I love the whole idea of Utopian struggling with his code and the world becoming too violent for it, and his therapy session with the super villain was brilliant. Chefs kiss kinda good. I love that kinda content.

The show definitely had passing issues and I found myself profoundly more interested in the events in the past then the present day story. After watching season one I went back and read Legacy and Circle, and the comics are a totally different beast. Some changes I enjoyed, some I hated. I both love and hate Brandon's change. We don't need 2 Chloe's, so making Brandon follow in his father's footsteps obsessively at first was an interesting new approach I enjoy then making him another Gothic party night life kid like Chloe.

After reading the comics, the present day story line should not be as boring as it is, and I think it's boring because they are stretching out the narrative. Aside from the Blackstar fight not much from the present day story is even in this show. Bits here and there but we are basically still in volume 1 by the end of the season. But that leaves plenty of juicy present day content for next season.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but if we don't get those big deaths at some point next season imma be pissed. And the time jump should happen between season 2 and 3.

This show isn’t perfect and has its small flaws but I did enjoy it way more than Umbrella Academy. Hope season 2 shows more of them as hero’s in the 20s, loved the flashback stuff

Damn some people here managed to get far. I just watched the first episode. The premise is interesting and I have no doubt it's executed much better in the comics, but the show is bad. Somehow it has a lower quality than the CW stuff and that's saying something. The fight scenes reminded me of Power Rangers. Not even gonna talk about costumes. Netflix should start putting more money into their properties if they wanna them to succeed.

the only thing worse than the acting in this show are the wigs, i couldnt even make it through the first episode.

I liked the show, and I'm really hoping for a second season...but that said, I agree with a lot of you...the show needs a LOT of improvement on its execution. The costumes were borderline CW-esque and the action scenes - i'm glad someone said it so i could finally put my finger on it - were way to reminiscent of early Power Rangers work. It's worth a second season, but only if they put a lot more effort into executing the paper-to-camera stuff better than they did in the first season.

Based on what I read here in the comments, I don't think the show is for me. Costume design looks cool though. Might give it a go sometime over the summer
