SQUID GAME Creator Confirms That A Second Season Is In Development: "You Leave Us No Choice"

This was almost inevitable given the massive success of the first season, but Squid Game creator Hwand Dong-hyuk has now officially confirmed that the Netflix series will return at some point.

Netflix's Squid Game proved to be very popular (it's actually now become the streamer's most successful show of all time), so you probably won't be too surprised to learn that the harrowing South Korean dystopic drama will return for a second season.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the news while speaking to Associated Press.

"So, there's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice," he said. "But, I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen."

"So I promise you this: Gi-hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.”

SPOILERS ahead.

The first season ended with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) emerging as the only survivor of the lethal games, which saw 456 contestants in various degrees of severe financial trouble put their lives on the line for the chance of winning a ₩45.6 billion (roughly €30m) prize. In the final episode, Gi-hun decides not to travel to America to reunite with his family, and it's strongly implied that he intends to track down and punish those responsible for planning the games.

Was there ever a doubt? That’s like asking if there will be another Avengers lol this thing is going to keep going for at least 2 more seasons given how popular it was

@Ha1frican - actually there was a lot of doubt. Traditionally, Korean shows are almost uniformly one-and-done affairs. Even the small handful that have had second seasons were new stories with new characters set in the same world. Netflix producing Korean content is the reason why this is the exception to a decades-old norm.

@TheNZNatural - What I mean is there’s no way this would do the numbers it did and Netflix wouldn’t make it all but impossible for this not to continue. It’s there biggest show ever there’s no way after that first week or two Netflix was gonna let this one go

@Ha1frican - this is true, but I don't think ANYONE predicted this kind of success when it first went out into the world.

Well deserved. Hope theres a showdown with Gi Hun and Storm Shadow, the 2 winners/protégés of the host

@JFerguson - also wanna see the cop return. Really the only character that interested me, and then that storyline just... ended. Storm Shadow could've atleast monologued some bit about why he did it

@bkmeijer - you’re right. He was the most interesting character to me as well. Really hope they bring him back, I don’t even care if it’s a cliche amnesia storyline where he washes up offshore or something.

But there needs to be more resolution between him and Storm Shadow

@JFerguson - It will be a game of champions and In-Ho / Front Man will participate in the game.

Also, they will delve into Front Man's story. He renounces his humanity to win and he became a man capable of killing his brother. He is similar to a tragic Darth Vader.

@Repian @JFerguson - that, combined with bringing his brother back would be pretty dope

@Repian - That's an awesome comparison to Darth Vader.

I do feel that a contest of past champions will make this feel too much like Hunger Games: Catching Fire with the Quarter Quell though.

Plus, the winners already made huge tons of money. All of them spend it all or something to agree to participate again lol? Remember, the nature of the game is about choosing to participate. Still, that sounds freaking awesome with these characters

@bkmeijer - I also see a redemption or at least a sacrifice in the front man's cards

I doubt they’ll top the first but this was expected. Even the ending of the first movie heavily implied the main character would return to try to take down the games.

Personally loved the show. Unique spin on a death game with good social commentary, acting, and writing that made it bingable.

I would sure hope so. The ending was more a cliffhanger than ambiguous.

@BlackBeltJones - Kind of makes sense. I remember having to fight my brothers and sisters to get a turn on the PS1. Live in your world, play in ours indeed.

So you give away the ending and THEN ask your readers if they've watched it yet?

@TheFinestSmack - you're right... I really should have spoiler tagged that. The series has been out for a while but I shouldn't assume eveyone has watched it.

As long as they don't rush it I'll be looking forward to it. Season One was one hell of a roller coaster ride.
