Netflix's Squid Game proved to be very popular (it's actually now become the streamer's most successful show of all time), so you probably won't be too surprised to learn that the harrowing South Korean dystopic drama will return for a second season.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the news while speaking to Associated Press.
"So, there's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice," he said. "But, I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen."
"So I promise you this: Gi-hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.”
SPOILERS ahead.
The first season ended with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) emerging as the only survivor of the lethal games, which saw 456 contestants in various degrees of severe financial trouble put their lives on the line for the chance of winning a ₩45.6 billion (roughly €30m) prize. In the final episode, Gi-hun decides not to travel to America to reunite with his family, and it's strongly implied that he intends to track down and punish those responsible for planning the games.
