While we will unfortunately have to wait until December for the second season of The Witcher, Netflix will whet our appetite with an anime prequel of sorts this August. During WitcherCon today, the streaming service announced that its upcoming anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will premiere on August 23.
The anime film will focus on Geralt of Rivia's mentor, Vesemir, as a powerful new threat faces the Continent. A teaser trailer was released alongside the release date announcement and a brief synopsis from Netflix that reads: “The anime film tells the story of Vesemir, a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin…”
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is being handled by Korean animation house Studio Mir, which is best known for its work on beloved animated series The Legend of Korra and Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is serving as producer.
Vesemir didn't actually appear in Season 1 of the live-action Witcher series, but the fan-favorite character is set to make his debut in the upcoming second season and will be played by Kim Bodnia. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will serve as a nice lead in to the character's live-action debut, allowing viewers to familiarize themselves with the young swashbuckling witcher.
It was also announced during WitcherCon that Season 2 of the live-action series will premiere on Netflix on December 17, and you can check out the new teaser trailer for that here.
