ANDOR Showrunner Tony Gilroy Sheds Some Light On How Season 2 Will Handle Its Planned Time Jumps

We're going to be waiting until 2024 for Andor to return, and showrunner Tony Gilroy has now explained how the creative team is approaching the time jumps that will see 12 episodes cover four years...

It was initially reported that Andor was going to play out over five seasons, with each of those devoted to a year of Cassian's life before we met him in Rogue One. It was an ambitious plan, and one that changed over time.

We're not sure when exactly that happened, but the two-season series now boasts a unique structure, with the first 12 episodes devoted to one year, and season 2 broken into four three-episode arcs with each of those covering the next four years. That obviously means we're getting time jumps in the show when it returns, leaving fans to wonder how that's going to work.

Talking to Collider (via SFFGazette.com), Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy explained, "Loud, soft, fast, slow, think, run, you want to balance all that stuff up. Job one is an adventure story. Job one is to make you want to turn the page or tune in next week. So, we have to tell an adventure story, and we have to keep things on the edge."

"But, the question that you ask, it's way too long to answer here. I don't know if anybody ever got to do this before, maybe someone's done it in a novel. I don't really know, I'd be curious. As writers, as dramatists, it has all kinds of really cool implications."

"It has a couple of things that make things difficult," he continued, "they have to be very brave about the negative space between the years, and you have to really trust the storytelling to not explain everything."

Gilroy would add to that by saying, "We have found out all kinds of things about it that are pretty interesting. That'll be a really interesting conversation if it works. Hopefully, it will work in two years."

So, it sounds like they're having to be very careful about how best to approach this format, with a lot of thought given to what we don't see between each time jump. While many fans were confused by the decision to tell Cassian's story over five seasons, there are those who now wish that was still the case after those stellar first 12 episodes.

Season 2 of Andor has started shooting and will premiere on Disney+ in 2024.

I say let 'em do what they want. If it works, it works, if it don't, it don't.

I thought the majority of the first half of the series didn't work as well as the second half, but it's definitely the one show that's trying to push Star Wars forward in a way that hasn't really been done in canon, since Empire Strikes Back.

Where it lags is when it's being forced to drop in some nostalgic member berries, because the fans are complaining that there aren't enough. Those were the worst easter eggs in recent memory. They were epic, but [frick]ing nonsensical. Please don't make Gilroy do this again. If he wants to drop something in there then let him, but don't make him because of optics or analytics.

Just let the show be what it wants to be.

And make more like this.

i think those spaces between arcs they wont fill in will be put into novels and comics.

Wait, they're condensing the next four seasons into one season?

So then, they're taking one of the key things that's defines Andor for good or ill away.

Again, just let this show be what it wants to be. But I may be too late in saying that. I think they just went and ruined it in one fell swoop.

Toss up between this and Mando as the best SW show. I love them each but for different reasons. This one has nothing to do with the force or light sabers and is all about the common man, the "rebel" and i gotta be honest... it was fantastic. I hope S2 is just as good but worried about taking 4 seasons and shoving it into 1... hoping for the best

@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah that's the main reason Bobo's higher than Obo for me, because of those two Mando episodes, lol.
