DISNEY GALLERY: THE MANDALORIAN Special Announced Exploring Luke Skywalker's Season 2 Finale Return

Hot off the heels of its 24 Emmy award nominations, Disney+ has announced that The Mandalorian is getting a special "Disney Gallery" episode exploring the awesome return of Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker.

The Mandalorian's season 2 finale shocked us all with the surprise appearance of a young Luke Skywalker. No one saw it coming, and there wasn't a single leak beforehand, which is a rarity these days. After the Star Wars sequels delivered what many considered to be a disappointing portrayal of the Jedi Master, the Disney+ series more than made up for that with an epic fight sequence.

Now, the story of the cutting-edge technology used to bring Luke back is the subject of a special extra episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian, debuting August 25 on Disney+.

"'Making of the Season 2 Finale' is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this celebrated 'chapter' of 'The Mandalorian,' with a focus on the technology used for recreating Luke Skywalker," reads the synopsis. "It delves into the collaborative process, including working with Mark Hamill, to create an authentic and fitting recreation, and explores the immense pressure and responsibility the filmmakers had in bringing back one of the most important characters in film history."

This news comes shortly after it was revealed that the Television Academy recognised the second season of The Mandalorian with 24 Emmy award nominations, including "Best Drama Series."

There's been no word on Loki getting a "Disney Gallery" episode yet, but chances are that's coming next Wednesday. Regardless, this is exciting news, and getting to delve into Luke Skywalker's return should be a lot of fun for fans, especially as very little has been revealed about how the scene was created up until now (there was actually no real mention of it in the last making-of special).

As noted, this episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian hits Disney+ on August 25.

Definitely gonna check it out. Interested to see how they did it (and hopefully also getting an answer as to why they went with deepfake).

As for next time he appears, I hope the technology has advanced a little more.

"with a focus on the technology used for recreating Luke Skywalker"

Honestly wasn't the best unfortunately. They should've had one of those Youtube deepfake channels do it instead!

I'm hoping to see Hamill on set with his ROTJ robes. That'd be worth it. Anyway, looked off, but the scene still works for me. Nostalgia ain't always bad

Finally! It bugged me that the Gallery doc ended right before that reveal. Mandalorian saved Star Wars from imminent peril, you're welcome

@bobevanz - yeah me too. then I realized Kennedy probably told them not to include Mark Hamill as she hates the fans and Star Wars legacy. Now this being released is a giant middle finger to her disdain for the character and I love it!
