Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ended with the heroic team of Rebels who stole the Death Star plans all dying after succeeding in their mission. It was a tragic, yet fitting ending, but Cassian Andor will return in a prequel TV series, Andor, coming to Disney+ sometime in 2022.
The show is set to run for twelve episodes, taking an in-depth look at what led Cassian to joining the Rebel Alliance all those years ago. There's definitely a story to be told there, and the hope is that we'll see some other familiar faces from the Star Wars Universe along the way.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Diego Luna opened up on his excitement to tell this story.
"It’s really interesting to tell a story even though we know where it ends. The way you can approach a story like this inevitably takes you into a deeper process of reflection," the actor explains. "I tend to use that word a lot. So once you know what Cassian is capable of, then there’s room for so much exploration, and that’s something that excites me a lot as an actor."
"I think the format of a series is amazing because we have a lot of time to explore all those layers. What happens in Rogue One is something we can actually reflect on, and what’s behind something like [sacrificing an informant]. It’s a very interesting challenge, the one we have in front of us. So I’m really excited to go back to that character because I really enjoyed playing him, and I was really happy with what the film represents. I feel blessed to have the chance to revisit this role."
Asked if Andor will make use of the same Volume technology we've seen used in The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luna responded: "I have to be very careful in the way I answer everything. The way we’re shooting this reminds me of how we shot the film, and the amount of work behind this TV series reminds me of the work you do for a film. It feels like we’re doing a very long movie."
It's still too soon to say whether this story needs to be told over twelve episodes, but Lucasfilm clearly feels that it's worth filling in some of the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. With an actor as talented as Luna in the lead role, though, we're definitely excited to see where this goes.
