Neil Gaiman Updates Status Of HBO's AMERICAN GODS And Warner Bros.' SANDMAN

What's the status of the Sandman television show? Where do things currently stand at HBO regarding the adaptation of American Gods? Celebrated writer Neil Gaiman gives updates on both projects.

Attending a SXSW panel [“Chuck Lorre: In Conversation with Neil Gaiman”] with Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory, producer), author Neil Gaiman touched on two projects of interest, Sandman and American Gods. Here's a recap of what was revealed.

  • Neil says he feels like it's 1996 again as he's writing new Sandman and Neverwhere.

  • On American Gods, Gaiman said that HBO is waiting on him to finish up a third draft of the pilot. Announced nearly two years ago, I was hoping the project would be a bit further along than this but it's a good thing the show's not being rushed I suppose.

  • As far as rumors of a Sadman television show or movie are concerned, Gaiman stated that "Sandman is completely and utterly owned by DC which is [essentially] Warner Bros. [Sandman] may go over to the big screen or stay with Warner Television. They don’t tell me". Chuck Lorre chimed in and said that he worked there and maybe he should talk to someone as Sandman deserved to be on a screen to which Gaiman agreed.

There's a bit more at the source link below which includes a minute-by-minute recap of the panel. Sadly, it sounds like neither American Gods or Sandman are progressing at a blistering pace. Still, there's always that new Sandman comic book prequel on the way.

SANDMAN seems like its never going to happen :(

DC/WB could make a line of horror/supernatural movies that can easily go up against Freddy, Jason, Michael etc.

Sad, they got so much gold, been sitting on JLA for years too, could've done what Marvel did even before Avengers! All them millions and millions and not a brain cell in sight. one day :p

American Gods and HBO gimmie a hellz Yeah!

Damn, we need PUNISHER there!

Sandman does deserve big screen treatment but the pacing of the stories would be best served as a telivision series. However it could be awesome to see a cameo or a reference of Morpheus and the Endless in Del Toro's Dark Universe.

sandman needs to happen but it won't because warner doesn't know what to do with any of their properties other than batman & superman.

"Announced nearly two years ago, I was hoping the project would be a bit further along than this but it's a good thing it's not being rushed I suppose."

Yeah, it is a slow process and they are known for taking their time with projects. Look at True Blood and Game of Thrones.

When Six Feet Under ended in summer 2005, Alan Ball announced he and HBO were developing True Blood in October of that year. The pilot didn't start filming until 2 years later in October 2007 and the pilot finally aired in September 2008, 3 years after the original announcement.

Game of Thrones began development in January 2007. The pilot didn't go into production until October 2009, with the series finally airing in April 2011, over 4 years after the original announcement.

Lots of great Sandman stories. Too bad WB can't pick even one of them to make a movie. I mean they have 8 endless characters, and dozens of other characters. Get a clue.

If they do a Sandman TV series I would settle for direct to DVD animated movies. One for each story arc.

i knoe that jla is totally the fan frontrunner for a dc big screen crossover, but crazy as it sounds i think sandman would be a way better way for making a dc cinematic universe, i mean i felt what got ppl about marvel's was the basic idea of continuity, the shared timelines n easter eggs, n 05's constantine i feel is wayyy more in the vein of nolans feel which coincidentally was released the same year as batman begins, i just think it'd b really cool to build with or off of a sandman picture, n itd definently be sumthing original in a way that i couldnt imagine marvel copying or being credited for

DC could make Marvel look laughable if they got their ass in gear and started getting the balls rolling on their properties.

Ive been meaning to read American Gods for quite a while now, the fact HBO is doing it fills me with hope and excitement.

I'm hoping that Gaiman is the secret writer on Dark Universe and that that script will start building a universe which could lead into a Sandman movie series. I could be wrong, but I really like he idea.
