SNOWPIERCER Will Be Released Uncut In The U.S.!...But There's A Catch

It seems director Bong Joon-ho and The Weinstein Company have finally come to a "truce" over the final U.S. / U.K. cut of Snowpiercer. Good news right? Well... maybe?

Old Harvey "Scissorhands" Weinstein has finally relented and come to a compromise with Bong Joon-ho over the final cut of the director's critically acclaimed sci-fi flick, Snowpiercer. In case you're not aware of the whole hullabaloo surrounding this, basically Weinstein deemed US audiences too dumb to fully grasp Joon-ho's two-and-a-half hour cut of the movie and was demanding 20 minutes cut and a voice-over added. The director fought him on it though, and now they've come to an arrangement: Weinstein will release the full cut of the movie, but only as a platform release — meaning the film will most likely only hit a few major cities before "rolling" out to other markets. I think this is, on the whole, great news. Even if you won't be able to catch the movie in your area (I myself have to travel quite a distance to find anything but multiplexes) at least you'll eventually be able to see the movie as Joon-ho intended you to, be in on VOD or home release. What do you guys make of this news?

I guess I will be waiting until it comes out on DVD. No big deal at all it's cheaper to just buy the DVD then go to the movies anyway.

@Gusto/Pasto - I'm a Michigander myself (Ann Arbor). I wouldn't be surprised if they show the film at the A2 State Theater.

LOL, Weinstein. What a hack. Cut down The Crow: City of Angels to no end and has his way with this film as well, why not just release the original cut to all theatres? What is that too complex for the idiot to comprehend? It's a movie, release the full-version so that people don't feel like they're idiots in having to listen to some stupid narration. I hate narration in films, mostly, just show me what's going on and I should be fine in figuring it out myself. Thank you very much.

So, he's punishing the director for wanting his creation to remain whole? Weinstein is a [frick]ing douchebag.

I just want to see this movie regardless of what version it is. Obviously I'd prefer the original but whatever, if the cut down one is good I'll check the full one out on BluRay too.

Why does Weinstein care so much about the cut of the film? Is he planning on marketing the hell out of it and wants something commercial friendly so he can make a few bucks? Its not like his company had to pay for production, they just bought some distribution rights. How much does this have to make in North America for his company to make a profit??

I guess this is sort of good news. Everyone knows that Harvey is a arrogant slimy micro-manager (among other creepier things), but I'll watch the film. I'm not in any rush but when I do it will be the director's version.

The best comic book news of the week though, is that someone who actually looks and sounds like The Vision is going to be playing him.

I thought some of the people around here were losing their minds when they were saying Clark Gregg or even Vin Diesel should/could be The Vision. It was the most ridiculous notion to me because neither (especially Vin) is right for the character but then I started worrying that it would actually happen.

Should have trusted Joss all along.

Keep Gregg mostly confined on that crap TV show, make Vin a talking tree with one a one-word repeated line.

That makes sense.

I'll wait for the movie to hit Blu-Ray and then watch the "Un-Weinstein'd" version of it. I'm not hunting down a theatre just to see the director's true vision because of that deluded, fat, [frick]wad's (Weinstein) inability to understand that the movie-watching audience is a diverse group that doesn't need to have his pudgy, sausage fingers spoon-feeding films to us.
