Sony is looking to move forward on the film revolving around Spider-Man 3 villain Venom, so says The Hollywood Reporter.

The studio is hoping that the spinoff will keep its Spider-Man franchise fresh in the same way the upcoming Wolverine solo movie is continuing the X-Men series.

Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) had previously written a script for Venom but Sony is looking to hire new screenwriters.

The villainous Venom - an alien symbiote - appeared in the third installment of the comic book action franchise, 2007's Spider-Man 3, and inhabited the body of the photojournalist Eddie Brock, played by Topher Grace in the movie.

There is some question whether Grace will return in the lead role. Sony has doubts that he can lead a big budget blockbuster.

The movie will be in addition to the forthcoming Spider-Man 4 film, which is expected to hit cinemas in 2011, according to Empireonline.com.
