EDITORIAL: 5 Hero-Based Video Games That I Want To See In The Future

The Arkham games. The inFamous saga. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. We've had a lot of great games in the past based on superheroes, and why should they stop being made? CBM user anthonyEstark is here with a list of some games that he would like to see in the future.

Heroes? No such thing? That isn't true in video games! In the industry of gaming, we've seen many improvements in technology, between the graphics, story, characters and more. And now in 2014, games can be made that seem almost too perfect. And over the years, some of these great games have been based on superhero characters. I'm here to give my thoughts on some more games that us fans could (and hope to) see in the future. I won't be counting movie tie-in games, as nearly every film has had one, and not many have been that great. So read on to check out some of my top picks for the future!

Number 5: Green Lantern.
Green Lantern is one of the most unique characters in comic book history, as he is able to fly, as well as create any sort of construct he puts his mind to. Imagine the possibilities you could do with that! He's not an easy character to pull off, and over the years he hasn't been portrayed correctly (Look to the Martin Campbell directed film for reference), but if done correctly the final payoff would be well worth it, and we would get a great game.

Number 4. Superman.
Another hard-to-portray character in a game is our Man of Steel himself, Superman. In fact, with the release of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel into theaters, the only tie-in we got was a cheap mobile game. While it is understandable that Superman is a hard character to pull off in a game, much like Green Lantern, he was one of the first superheroes to come to comics, and even today is still one of the most iconic and recognized. I would prefer that someone like RockSteady create this game, as they've done an amazing job with Batman in the main Arkham trilogy, and with that series ending, I think that it's time they move on and give more characters like this a new twist in gaming.

Number 3. The Avengers.
If there is one team that hasn't been marketed in video games, it's The Avengers. While they are the second, if not the most popular team in comic history, but the only games we've had based solely on Earth's Mightiest Heroes was the 2012 released fighter style game Avengers: Battle For Earth, released only to X-Box 360 and Wii U consoles, the fan-favorite Lego Marvel Super Heroes, released to all consoles in October last year, and the well-known MMO Marvel Heroes. And while these games may be fun to play, We want something more. Something with a great story, great graphics, great characters and more, which we need. A great story to portray would be Secret Invasion. Australian gaming studio THQ was working on a game with the concept featuring characters such as the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and more, but the game was sadly canceled before it's release.

Number 2. Justice League.
With the Justice League, we've had several games already, such as the beat-'em-up style Injustice: Gods Among Us as well as it's upcoming sequel, DC's online MMO's Infinite Crisis, and DC Universe Online, and more. But much like The Avengers, we still haven't got what fans want. The Justice League can be harder to pull off than The Avengers, and that's one of the reasons that DC hasn't made a film yet. But we need to see these characters in a full-feature game. Much like with my Superman category, I believe that RockSteady should create the game, as all of these heroes and villains could be done greatly if payed attention to. Now, onto our final game...

Number 1. DC VS. Marvel.
If there's one game I've seen requested, talked about, and even teased in video games, it's a crossover between Marvel and DC comics. We've already seen both crossover with other companies such as Capcom and NetherRealm, but never with each other. There are two possible ways that the two could be portrayed in games, and those are: 1. LEGO games. We've had video games from LEGO and TT Games for both DC and Marvel, and at the end of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, Batman was actually teased, but ended up being Black Panther. 2. A beat-'em-up style game. A very likely way to do a crossover would be to do it in the format of NetherRealm's Injustice: Gods Among Us. Many fans enjoyed the first, and with a sequel in the works, that means that the franchise isn't dead, and there's a possibility that we could see some Marvel characters in the future.

Well, those are the top 5 video games based on superheroes that I hope to see in the future of gaming. Not what you were expecting or wanted to see? Drop a comment below, and let us know your favorites and most expected!

Great article. I'd like to see a 1st person shooter game based on S.H.I.E.L.D. because it would clearly have the potential to be a great game. I'd also like to see Marvel try to create the biggest Marvel game of all time. 200 characters, well over 12 hours of gameplay, over two hours total of cutscenes, and a massive plot and great villains. I'm still dreaming though...

Superman could work if the use a selective god mode.Simply put have certain enemies able to hurt him while others can't.With the enemies who can't hurt him it would be a challenge like stop the get away cars in a certain time limit or save the people in a burning building. The hardest thing about it would be the flying making the flight easy to control yet still making traversing the levels a challenging will be a difficult task.

As for the Lego games it was a rare loophole that allowed them to make the Lego Marvel game seeing as Lego have the rights to make legos of both DC and Marvel characters, whether they can have the two property in the same game maybe another legal matter entirely.

Daredevil. More than anything, I want to see ol' hornhead get his big break in gaming. I mean, given what the dude can do, it'd really be somethin' fresh in terms of gameplay.

There's this one issue early in Frank Miller's run where Bullseye flips out (as he's prone to doing) and starts f*cking up random people in New York (I can break it down for you, give you the details, but-- short version: he's Bullseye. Crazy needs to catch up to his level of insanity so we can rewrite the dictionary and make "Bullseye" a synonym for "bat-shit"), anyway, Bullseye kidnaps these two dudes.. and one of 'em has a nasty cough, so he was using these throat lozenges to calm the effects. Now, Daredevil gets to the place where they were last seen, and he finds a few of the cough drops on the floor and realises that the lozenges weren't taken with them when they were kidnapped by Bullseye, so.. the poor bastard is coughing up a storm, and, given that Bullseye is a smoker- it's only aggravating the hostage's condition. But, Matt.. he realises he's got somethin' to go on-- so he gets to a rooftop and listens very closely to the sounds of the city, and he starts cutting them out one by one-- he blocks out the sounds of cars, the sounds of people talking, the trains,.. he narrows down all the different sounds until he's able to pin down the location where the captives are being held by the sound of that dude's cough.

That's a whole new level of detective work right there. I mean, think about the possibilities in gameplay if you were to properly utilise DD's powers.

I want to see a Green Arrow game, mostly because I love Arrow. Wouldn't mind a Green Arrow game based in the Arrow Universe, a Green Arrow like what was in JLU, Green Arrow from Injustice or one closer to the comics.

Green Lantern could be a cool game but the number of constructs would be limited were as a Lantern is only limited by his imagination. The only way round that would be to let you portray different members of the corp.

Superman would be a hard balancing act what with his power set, unless you pull out the really big guns.

I wouldn't mind seeing either a Avengers of a Justice League game, you could control any member of the teams. I wouldn't mind a game where you create your own hero and decide what type of character he is then the goal is to join the League or The Avengers.

Not so keen on a DC VS marvel, mostly because I doubt it would happen.

^^ A Green Arrow game has the most potential in terms of Ability for development and ease of play/story. It helps that Queen Industries was hinted in Origins. Perhaps not based in the Arrow-verse for the benefit of continuity, I would imagine a story such as this:

PROLOGUE - The City
. Brief prologue sequence as playboy Oliver Queen in Star City/aboard the yacht to familiarise the player with basic controls and to establish Oliver as a twat, and brief relationships with key characters who will return later (emotional investment, possibly family members and a young Dinah Lance)
. Cut scene/titles depicting Oliver being stranded on the island

PART 1 - The Island
. Survival on the island (4-5 hours of gameplay) - "Tomb Raider" is a great example of how this could work:
http://youtu.be/vhh0AiAH_To
Including an Arrow-like build up of potential villains that would return later as side missions/main villains or sequel threats
. Have an SOS mechanic (maybe a tricky arrow shot into a flaming pyre at time-based events) at a latter stage after main island story so that the player doesn't have to be forced to leave the island immediately so the can complete side missions/build up proficiency with the bow

. PART 2 - The Return
. Oliver returns to Star City, fashions the Green Arrow persona (if shared universe with Arkham, takes inspiration from Batman's televised heroics)
. Arkham Origins-style free roam around city (either grappling like Arkham with bow, or some other means of travel to disassociate the two titles)
. Deal with corruption of Queen Industries and rising crime rates, tie together with reveal of big bad

Obviously I only made this up just now, but with a bit more work it could be really successful! especially when benefitting from Arrow's popularity and a possible Batman appearance.

TheSonOfKryption - That sounds like a good idea for how a Green Arrow game could go, i'd play it. I think Rocksteady could do a brilliant job with a Green Arrow + with Green Arrow you've got a chance for a good co-op game as well

I wouldn't mind seeing a Suicide Squad game. it was implied at the end of Arkham Origins and with Assault on Arkham film basically being about the Suicide Squad and them being set up in Arrow I think it would have a shot and could be cool.

In regards to the article:
- Green Lantern could be great with the multi-world possibilities (dlc could be other planets/maps to explore) and construct based combat. A quirky idea could be players could 'construct their own constructs' either from creating from scratch, or purchasing different packs via in game or dlc.

- I desperately want to see a Superman game done justice, along with truth and the American way ;) Like DrunkenNukem suggested, you only need to look at his most successful story arcs to see what works - imagine playing out the fight with Doomsday, defeating a swarm of Brainiac drones, or taking on an army of Kryptonian invaders. Similar to my Green Arrow idea, a prologue could provide adequate fan service, mastering Kal's abilities in his youth.

- Just look at the footage of that cancelled Avengers game. Oh what could, and should, have been...

- Justice League would be significantly harder than Avengers due to the roster and their arguably stronger powers. Not perhaps depicting them graphically, but providing each member with a valuable role so that characters like Superman or Flash don't take the spotlight powers-wise over Batman (who am I kidding) or others.

- If the above two games could be established first, then I'm all for it.

I'd like to think a Superman game set out in space for the most part would work, with really powerful enemies.

A great one would be Green Lantern as an open worrld type thing. You fly into space from a planet and then there's a wormhole that you can take to the next planet.

I like these, except for #1.

The chances are of that happening are very slim. and if it does happen, fanboy warfare would be at an all-time high with complaints about how they're favorite characters (in marvel or DC) got screwed over by the game developers.

As for a Superman game, it would probably have to be an Open World RPG.
Some thing like a mix of GTA 5 open world (with HUGE maps) and Transformers War for/Fall of Cybertron chapter by chapter story telling.

Green Lantern IMO is the hardest one to pull off.
Mainly because of the constructs.
It would basically be constructs already pre-designed by game devs rather than something you create yourself.

In order for it to be good, they would have to create hundreds upon hundreds of difference constructs for difference scenarios. in which case, you're going to have a LOT of problems with remembering combos, unless you're doing the fighting similar to the Arkham games where its got continuous fighting flow with a single button.

A DC vs Marvel game would be great! Although I can only see it being a 2D fighter just like Injustice. IF they ever make that game I hope the design is a lot more similar to the comics than Injustice. Nothing wrong with Injustices' design, but some of the characters just look weird or didn't even resemble their comic counterparts.

I'm loving the other suggestions. I agree that Daredevil and Green Arrow are long overdue for video game treatment.

For Injustice 2, I would like to see Flashpoint as a storyline. It would make for some extraordinary game stages.

Great article anthonyEstark!

I think Superman could be made into a great game. Those stating he is too powerful don’t forget he has many villains that can go toe to toe with him: Brainiac, Bizarro, Atomic Skull, Zod, Metallo, Lobo, Mongul, Parasite (can weaken him), Solomon Grundy, Toyman (used in indestructible machines), Ultraman and of course Darkseid & Doomsday.

The words you wrote for Green Lantern may be the best I’ve seen written on the potential of this character (both for video games and a live movie): “Green Lantern is one of the most unique characters in comic book history, as he is able to fly, as well as create any sort of construct he puts his mind to. Imagine the possibilities you could do with that!” – Aside from a video game, GL needs another stab at a movie ASAP.

Avengers & JL are no brainers and would make for some of the best video games of all time.

Lastly, DC vs. Marvel is not only a dream video game it also would make a historical movie. Mark my words, it may take 5 to 10 years but the time will come when CBM will fall from blockbuster glory as all genres do. The fact CBM will run their time onscreen is inevitable and before all is said & done we will get an onscreen DC vs. Marvel movie with this current CBM run (2000 – 2020).

Not to say CBM won’t pick up steam ever again after this era runs its course (everything goes in cycles) but it will be fun as heck seeing a DC vs. Marvel showdown on screen as the last act of this era.
