2K and Fixaxis' upcoming tactical RPG Marvel's Midnight Suns will launch on October 7, 2022, after being hit with a brief delay from this summer. The game will be available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch version coming at a later date.

A release date wasn't the only big news, as a cinematic trailer revealed Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch as two unlockable playable characters. Spider-Man will be voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, who has voiced the web-slinger in multiple Marvel projects, most notable being Insomniac Games' PlayStation exclusive Marvel's Spider-Man.

This now brings the roster of playable characters in Marvel's Midnight Suns to 12, including Doctor Strange, Magik, Iron Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Blade, Captain America, Nico Minoru, Captain Marvel, and you, the Hunter. There's still one more hero to be revealed, although Firaxis has confirmed they will be unlocked only when you beat the game.

Marvel's Midnight Suns explore Marvel's darker, supernatural side. With Hydra having revived Lilith, Mother of Demons, the Avengers enlist the help of the Midnight Suns to prevent total destruction. Together, they resurrect the Hunter, Lilith's forsaken child and the only hero known to have ever defeated her. As you probably guessed, you take on the role of The Hunter, a completely customizable hero that you can build the way you want to fit your playstyle.

When the demonic Lilith and her fearsome horde unite with the evil armies of Hydra, it’s time to unleash Marvel’s dark side. As The Hunter, your mission is to lead an unlikely team of seasoned Super Heroes and dangerous supernatural warriors to victory. Can legends such as Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and Blade put aside their differences in the face of a growing apocalyptic threat? If you’re going to save the world, you'll have to forge alliances and lead the team into battle as the legendary Midnight Suns - Earth's last line of defense against the underworld.

With a release date now set, Marvel's Midnight Suns is now available for pre-order with four different Editions available. Here's what's included with each:

  • The Standard Edition will be available for $59.99* on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It includes the base game;
  • The Enhanced Edition will be available for $69.99* on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It includes a next-gen optimized version of the game for next-gen consoles and five premium cosmetic skins;
  • The Digital+ Edition will be available for $79.99* on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It includes 11 premium cosmetic skins. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S SKUs include the next-gen optimized version of the game for next-gen consoles;
  • The Legendary Edition will be available for $99.99* on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It includes 23 premium cosmetic skins, as well as access to the post-launch Marvel’s Midnight Suns Season Pass.

Marvel's Midnight Suns releases worldwide on October 7, 2022, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The Switch version is coming at a later date.

Interesting. What's the gameplay like?

@UGLYsonic - A tactical RPG. Think XCOM, Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea.

Is that misspelled and should be "sons"? Or is this actually called Midnight Suns? I feel like that name is awfully silly and just weird. So they are suns like our sun that Earth orbits Earth but there is only one Sun. I'm very confused lol
LordMushu
LordMushu - 6/12/2022, 9:41 AM
@WarMonkey - No they made it “suns” to be more accurate with female characters joining.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 6/12/2022, 9:46 AM
@LordMushu - I'm actually not sure if you are joking or not. It does sound like something they would do though, make a change that makes zero sense to the fantasy world or the characters in it

@WarMonkey - With the inclusion of both male and female characters how does it not make any sense?...
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 6/12/2022, 11:59 AM
@Tonic24k - Midnight is defined The middle of the night specifically 12 o'clock at night. Sun is defined as the star that the Earth orbits. Sun is not a synonym for Sons so I think it's ridiculous.

Tonic24k - 6/12/2022, 11:17 PM
@WarMonkey - Well I mean that's the typical perspective, sure. But Midnight Sun is an actual term referring to regions where the sun is still visible at midnight.

With the power of figurative language maybe there's some reasoning within the story.

@Tonic24k - That's a fair point.

I'm so mixed on this game. I like the roster of Marvel heroes and I like the fantasy aspect of good vs. evil demon stuff, but I'm not yet convinced of the mix between the two. Especially since it's gonna be like XCOM, while RPG gameplay makes much more sense to me for a game with this set-up.

@bkmeijer1 - Interesting. I'm the opposite. I'm really excited for the gameplay and genre. I LOVE strategy games. But the roster is terrible for a game supposedly based on the Midnight Sons. There's seriously only 3 actual Midnight Sons playable characters lol.

@CorndogBurglar - for a Midnight Sons roster, I agree the line-up is terrible. Just these characters in general are pretty cool though, so I still like it

Tonic24k - 6/12/2022, 11:52 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Questions for ya since you seem to be privy to the source material. (I am to a degree but really only in gist.)

What makes this a "Midnight Sons" game in the first place for them to commit to that being what the title is based on? If it's such a departure from the roster and requires an adjusted title...what else could the game be called?

Does the story / antagonist dictate it be a Midnight [Suns] game?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/12/2022, 5:56 PM
@Tonic24k - So, Midnight Sons were a team whose entire shtick was fighting dark supernatural enemies. So, Blackout for instance, who was the villain in the 2nd Nick Cage Ghost Rider movie, as an example.

Lilith was their main villain and fought her more times than any other enemy. She's "The Mother of Demons".

She's also the villain in this game. But this, along with Blade, Ghost Rider, and Dr Strange tells me that they always set out to make a Midnight Sons game. Then they probably realized that the mainstream probably wouldn't be overly excited for a Marvel game without their usual A-listers, so they added a bunch of Avengers and Wolverine.

It just sucks. They could have had Moon Knight (who technically was never part of the team, but fits a lot better than Avengers characters), Dr Voodoo, Man-Thing, Hannibal King, Helstrom, Morbius, and Elsa Bloodstone instead of all these Avengers. They are all cool characters with unique power sets.

But I suppose those characters don't sell games.

Tonic24k - 6/12/2022, 11:31 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Ah the dilemmas of capitalism. Lol. I agree with you. As a Marvel nerd, I'm enough in tuned with some of the more obscure characters to just be attracted to the game if it were just supernatural oriented heroes.

I think the best way around this is to have a large game with all the household name characters but design it to have pillared campaigns or events. So from a marketing standpoint, you attract the general consumer. But then for the fans, you could have a Midnight Sons campaign, for example, where you're only able to pick from a roster limited to the corresponding characters. And that campaign / event has its own story to satisfy the experience.

Btw, are you playing Marvel Future Revolution or Strike Force?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/12/2022, 11:34 PM
@Tonic24k - I played Strike Force for a while, but I haven't logged in for a pretty long time. Like a couple years. Had a pretty good X-Men team, but never maxed them out.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 6/13/2022, 10:35 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Yeah I ended up quitting the game, too. It just became too much and the devs just can't release anything without a slew of bugs to deal with.

If you haven't checked out Future Revolution tho I highly recommend it. It's an open world mobile game with stellar graphics. The story is good, the progression elements are fun, and it's mostly F2P friendly. (Especially compared to most other micro transaction games.)

I love X-Com style strategy games, so I'll definitely be getting this. But the roster is very disappointing.

Why is the majority of the roster Avengers characters in a Midnight Sons game? Seriously, there are only 3 actual Midnight sons characters. Dr Strange, Blade, and Ghost Rider.

There's absolutely no reason why Iron Man, Cap, Wolverine, Spider-Man, or Captain Marvel should be in this game, other than to help sell it to people that only watch movies and know nothing about the comics. But if that's the case, don't call it Midnight Sons. At this point, this is an Avengers game.

Morbius was a Midnight Sons member who is notably missing.

@Razorface1 - I'm curious about it. We've had so many button mashers like MUA. I like the idea of making strategic combat decisions and letting the animations play out. Allows it to be a bit more cinematic.
