We've known for a while now that prominent video game publisher Activision Blizzard was
looking to develop an entire expanded film universe based on its wildly popular
Call of Duty franchise, and now it looks like Activision Blizzard Studios - the company's film division - has taken a huge step toward making that happen.
According to
Variety,
Sicario 2: Soldado director Stefano Sollima is in negotiations to helm a movie adaptation of the popular video game franchise. An Activision Blizzard rep declined to comment on the rumor.
Kieran Fitzgerald penned the script for the movie, which is still currently without a distributor. Although plot details are being kept under wraps, both Fitzgerald and Activision Blizzard Studios' co-president Nick van Dyk previously discussed their plan to put together a universe "that will draw on the feel of the different incarnations of the game rather than bringing over existing plots." The two are hoping to turn the mega popular
Call of Duty franchise into a cinematic universe that could rival Marvel or DC. At least one of those seems achievable.
Call of Duty enthusiasts will get their first glimpse of Sollima's potential when
Sicario 2: Soldado opens in theaters on June 29.
