Phew, my first article/editorial. Here we go...
As a guy growing up with comic book characters like Batman, Superman, & of course, Spider-Man, I pretty much never missed out on any of the characters in popular media. Be it television, movies, merchandising, but the one thing that really held my interest was Video-Games.
Spider-Man is my go-to character. He's had so many different variations in the comics, & in the gaming world, too. I remember playing
Spider-Man (2000) for the PlayStation 1 back when I was 6. It was one of my first experiences with video-games in general & at the time I didn't think it could get any better.
& then 2004 came, when not only did we get the best Spidey movie yet, but also the best Spidey game yet!
& it was a movie game? Come on now! Where dey do dat at?
Spider-Man 2 featured realistic web-swinging mechanics in a fully-open world Manhattan with randomly-generated crimes & civilian situations. To this day, it's regarded as the best of them all, because, to be honest, eeehhhh, the ones that followed
weren't so hot...
Yyyeah.
After
Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man games have kinda been on a decine, where it's repetitivity in gameplay or just pure uninspired developing. The most recent outing,
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 shows that for sure, but the swinging is still kinda cool. Kinda. & with the release of
Batman: Arkham Knight, us fans grow even more desperate for a masterpiece Spider-Man game.
& with that being said, I'd like to suggest a couple of ideas for a futue game:
1. "Cinematic Swinging"
A new mechanic where you swing through Manhattan while holding down a certain button for an experience just like the movies (See TASM 2 for example). It could even be in first-person at times.
Something like this should be implemented. It'll make for Spectacular swinging unlike no other existing Spidey game.
2. "Adapt A Recent Good Storyline"
Weeeell, define good. Some storylines & arcs done by Marvel today aren't all that hot, but I may be one of the very few that enjoyed
The Superior Spider-Man. I especially enjoyed the arc that followed:
Goblin Nation. It made for a good comeback of Peter Parker taking back his mantle from Doc Ock & putting a stop to the Green Goblin's reign. But Peter also had a lot of explaining to do, as Spider-Ock was technically him & pretty much pissed off all who cared about Peter. I think for overcoming big obstacles like this while having dire consequences in the future (Black Cat, why?), this could work perfectly for a video-game adaptation, but there are others, this is just my example.
3. "A Unique Combat System"
Say what you want about Web of Shadows, but boooooy does the Web-Strike mechanic come in handy! Zipping to enemies on the ground, the wall, & into the air showed off how quick & agile our hero is. combine that with Spider-Man 2's combat & it'll never get repetitive & stale.
Seriously, the Arkham-styled combat needs to be toned down now.
4. "Give Us Actually Engaging Side-Missions!"
C'mon, we want to feel like we've accomplished something. For years we've pretty much been doing the same missions over & over. Either try to find something new or make the same old same old feel bigger & better than before. & PLEASE,
NO. MORE. NEWS COVERAGE AFTER THE RANDOM CRIME IS AVERTED.
Ex: You can find multiple ways of stopping a speeding car, but which way is the right way for that particular situation? Whichever way you do it will determine how the press & the public will feel about you. (Idk I'm just talking out of my ass now.)
Welp, that's my idea list, sorry for the picture spam XD. What ideas do you have for a future Spider-Man video-game? What's your top 5 existing games?
Do you think we'll ever get one as good as Spider-Man 2 or the Batman Arkham games?
