Since the launch of
Star Wars: Battlefront 2, EA has been listening to fan feedback and working to address the controversial progression system. Four months later, and it seems they’ve finally figured it out. The company announced today the upcoming release of the
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Progression Update, which will completely revamp the in-game progression system, effectively removing the annoying randomness of the loot crate system.
Following the update, progression in
Battlefront 2 will be come linear, meaning Star Cards, or any other item that impacts gameplay, will only be earned through actual gameplay and not available for purchase with real money. EA explains:
“Instead, you’ll earn experience points for the classes, hero characters, and ships that you choose to play in multiplayer. If you earn enough experience points to gain a level for that unit, you'll receive one Skill Point that can be used to unlock or upgrade the eligible Star Card you'd like to equip.”
Additionally, loot crates will not be able to be purchased, and will no longer include Star Cards. Instead, Crates will only include Credits or cosmetic items - emotes, victory poses, etc. - and can only be earned through in-game systems such as logging in daily, completing Milestones, and completing timed challenges.
That said, EA is completely gutting microtransactions. In April, they are introducing Appearances, or new looks for your heroes or troopers. Although you will be able to unlock these directly through Credits, which are earned in-game, you’ll also have the option to purchase them outright with Crystals (available for real-life money).
Despite all of these changes, EA assures that you’ll be able to keep everything you’ve already earned and unlocked. This includes Star Cards, heroes, weapons, or anything else you have already earned.
“These changes are a major step as we continue to improve the core of the game and add new content. And there’s a lot more to come,” EA said.
“In addition to continued balance patches, we will also add a number of modes to Star Wars Battlefront II in the coming months, offering several standout, brand-new ways to play. Some of these, like the recently released limited-time Jetpack Cargo, are radically different than anything you've experienced in the game before, and we're excited to surprise you with what we have planned.”
The
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Progression Update will go live on March 21.
