THE LAST OF US Set Photos Give Us Another Look At Pedro Pascal As Joel & Bella Ramsey As Ellie

We recently got an official glimpse of The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, but some new photos from the set of the HBO series now give us a much better look.

More photos from the set of HBO's The Last of Us adaptation have found their way online, and while some of them are not the clearest, others do provide a much better look at the main cast members in full costume.

The recent official promo still featured both Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) from behind, but the former can be seen walking towards the camera here - though he is wearing a face-covering. The shot of Ramsey, meanwhile, is not from a great angle and is a little blurrier, but her signature red hoodie can be seen beneath her coat.

The Last of Us Updates Twitter page has also shared some photos from the Edmonton, Canada set, and they look like they could be screenshots from the video games.

Pascal and Ramsey join Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, and Nico Parker as Joel's daughter Sarah.

The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and the game's creator Neil Druckmann are writing and executive producing the show. The first season will adapt the events of the original game, but is also expected to include elements of the sequel. Druckmann recently confirmed that the series will take some liberties with the story.

The first season will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to air in 2022.

Hopefully if the show goes into the time of the second game they fix that mess.

@suitekid - @Spawnn so the game that spent the whole runtime on a revenge mission only to end with them making the claim the person who killed Joel was justified is masterful?

@Origame - It really is difficult. On one hand, I have stated to fix the game I would have made the players choose whether to go out for revenge or stay put and enjoy the moment; allowing the players to be more angry at themselves more than the game for the ending they received and thus teaching them a life lesson. However at the same time on the other hand, players getting mad at the game (and essentially Ellie) for ruining the ending and what she had also proves the game writers and developer's point.

@CaptainFlapjaks - thats effectively saying the game can't be criticized since that's what the devs intended. Technically we can't complain about how the last Jedi handled Luke, because that's how they intended that story.

It's thematically inconsistent, goes against ellie and her motives, and makes the actual plot pointless.

@Origame - I liked TLOU2, the devs said TLOU franchise was always about the choices these characters make and their consequences. In my opinion it played out really well because the whole game explores every character and their choices. All their choices make sense and is justified. Ellie in the 1st game never really had a choice on what happened to her, in 2 we experience all the choices she would've made.

Origame - 10/13/2021, 8:30 AM
@mastakilla39 - I can respect that. But by that logic shouldn't Abby face consequences for all she did?
DTor91
DTor91 - 10/13/2021, 8:48 AM
@Origame - It never claims Abby was justified. Abby paid for her actions by the end. Ellie too paid for her own actions, as did Joel. The whole game was about the consequences the first game set up.
Origame
Origame - 10/13/2021, 9:05 AM
@DTor91 -...how did she pay? And what did ellie have to pay for?
SeanMPC
SeanMPC - 10/13/2021, 9:16 AM
@Origame - Ellie killed pretty much all of Abby's close friends? Fairly certain that counts as Abby having paid?

Also "what did Ellie have to pay for?" - killing all of Abby's friends, and whoever else got in her path! And Abby paid for killing Joel by losing her loved ones and only having one person left in the world close to her.

Like... Abby is totally justified in wanting to kill Joel. Ellie is totally justified in wanting to kill Abby.

Not liking what happens to a character doesn't equal a bad story. Simple as.

(Nobody left GoT in the first season because Ned was killed brutally.)
Origame
Origame - 10/13/2021, 9:34 AM
@SeanMPC - I mean, Abby killed a bunch of them too. And I'd say that's their consequence for MURDERING ELLIES ADOPTED FATHER. This really isn't pretty clear consequences.

@Origame - Throughout the game we experience how similar Gabby/Ellie's life are, there is no good or bad, and life depends on all the choices you make in life. The only way to stop revenge/hatred is for 1 or both of them to stop seeking vengeance.

Joel, Ellie, and Tommy killed important people in Gabby's life therefore she does the same. The game is a metaphor for Karma and Enlightment. Ellie should have never went after Gabby because Joel had to pay for his sins and choices he made to save Ellie. There is no cure for the clickers because of him and he killed Gabby's father a good person.

Gabby already knows this early in the game and that's why she let Ellie live twice. 1st when Joel was killed and again in the theater after killing Ellie's friend. Gabby knew that revenge and hate has to stop somewhere or else it becomes an endless cycle. It takes Ellie the whole game to learn this. Ellie has been projecting her anger and guilt in missing the chance to make up with Joel onto Gabby despite knowing it was wrong. She already knew Gabby wasn't a bad person because Gabby saved the trans kid and let her live twice when she didn't have to.
Origame
Origame - 10/13/2021, 10:13 AM
@mastakilla39 - the problem is that that was poorly handled. No one saw ellie as being in the wrong, just gabby.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 10/13/2021, 11:12 AM
@Origame - It was pretty apparent to me after 25 hrs of gameplay. You knew Ellie wasn't right either after killing Mel the pregnant lady and once you start playing Gabby and learn about her life. Alot of the backlash was mostly angry fans at Joel getting murdered too early in the game, the violence, and trying too hard to be PC/woke. alot of the hate on gabby is from her killing joel and the devs justifying it. But if they justify it and it fits the theme/story the devs are telling then I don't get why it's poorly handled? The game makes sense and the message is super obvious.
Origame
Origame - 10/13/2021, 11:42 AM
@mastakilla39 - but that pregnant woman attacked her with a knife. What was she supposed to do?

And Abby lost so much of her justification in killing Joel from a) the fact the fireflies Joel killed were gonna kill him, 2) the surgeon legitimately didn't care about killing ellie, a child at the time, 3) Joel saved Abby like right before she killed him, and the fact he saved her didn't make her question her decision in the slightest, and 4) Abby ends up killing the remaining "friends" she supposedly cared about. I really don't see how you can justify that.

And I'm not saying it isn't obvious what they were trying to do. I'm saying they failed miserably at it.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 10/13/2021, 3:15 PM
@Origame - That was not what I was saying. The game can be criticized for how it went along with it and the meaning behind it (how it was executed). All I was saying was that either way you look at it, they still got the same result. They could have just went about it a better way. I was saying that they should have went about it in a better way, but it's still funny that they got what they wanted out of it by people's reactions. I would argue that her going out for revenge doesn't make the plot pointless (it actually adds to the point if anything) that the idea of TLOU2 is that revenge leads to nothing good. I didn't agree with it, and wish they did end it with her on the farm with her family. But it still thematically fits.
Origame
Origame - 10/13/2021, 3:48 PM
@CaptainFlapjaks - ...and that's what I'm saying. They tried to make us care about Abby and it failed.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 10/13/2021, 8:02 PM
@Origame - Joel and Tommy weren't much better human beings, it was hinted in the intro that they did messed up things to survive before meeting Ellie. Establishing that every character in this game is no better or worst than Abby. Abby is justified in killing Joel because its his karma. Joel killed her father to selfishly saved Ellie and doomed millions of people to a horrible fate. Gabby's revenge is Joel's karma catching up to him. The doctor was a good person, better than Joel, devs show this when he saves the zebra from the barb wire showing he values "all life" and not just 1 like Joel. Ellie even agrees to die if it will save millions justifying the doctor's actions. Abby never killed any of her friends? They were all murdered by Ellie and Tommy.

The theme is super obvious because the devs designed both characters to have the same story but from different perspectives. Abby and Ellie's life are literally parallel to each other. Devs even redid Last of Us 1's plot again with Abby and Lev before they get captured. If you hate Abby it means you have to hate Joel and Ellie too because the devs literally designed both abby and ellie's journey from both tlou 1 & 2 to be the same.

Origame - 10/14/2021, 1:56 AM
@mastakilla39 - dude, why do you keep saying it's super obvious? I know it is. The problem is I can't sympathize with the person who kills Joel without even a second thought about the fact he saved her right before. Or the fact she just kills her remaining friends. And ellie has simply been responding to the fact these people just killed her adoptive father right in front of her in a very needlessly brutal fashion. If it's karma for Joel then it's karma for this group and Abby should've died.

Also don't tell me it was selfish of Joel to save ellie. The fireflies were being incredibly incompetent with their handling of the only known person with an immunity (like seriously, they were gonna kill her before even testing anything) and they were gonna kill Joel anyway. And most people really don't agree with hating Joel and ellie as much as Abby.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 10/14/2021, 5:17 AM
@Origame - if its obvious, i don't get why you can't sympathize with abby despite killing joel? They equally show both characters being victims of each other's revenge. Joel saving abby and her killing joel is equivalent to ellie killing abby's friends after abby saved her.

it was selfish to save ellie because the fireflies were the only ones capable of creating a cure, there not incompetent because they put joel in charge of escorting her, and they even let joel say goodbye before the operation. joel took advantage of this and was selfish. tlou 2 plainly shows it lead him to a life of loneliness, ellie hating him, and getting murdered by abby. i think fans who hate tlou 2 just don't get it or are bias because they killed joel. tlou 2 is a darker and more brutal game than the 1st one and more complex.

@mastakilla39 - there's a huge difference between knowing what they're going for and actually feeling what they want me to feel. Abby was entirely in the wrong, doing nothing to make me care about her position. I know they want me to feel bad for her and sympathize with her, but I don't. Have her reflect on her actions, hesitate to kill someone who just saved her, maybe NOT HAVE HER KILL HER REMAINING FRIENDS!

I literally just started playing the first game last night because the second became free to play on my PS5 so I have both now. Its been an experience. I can see how this game may have helped influence the story driven and environmental design of the Spiderman games, the level of detail in the world is nuts and the story is great.

That being said, it's pretty obvious they were going for Josh Brolin and Elliot Page. At least that's the vibe I got. The casting they did do, I like the actors a lot, but idk about for these roles.

Imma keep playing the games and I'll definitely be checking this out.
