WANTED 2 Writer Explains Why The Sequel Has Never Happened: "The Momentum Has Been Lost..."

Wanted was a hit when it arrived in theaters in 2008 but the long-rumoured sequel has failed to ever become a reality. Now, writer Michael Brandt shares an update on the project and why it hasn't happened.

Wanted, starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, was released in 2008 to mostly positive reviews. The movie took some major liberties with Mark Millar and J. G. Jones' comic book of the same name, but a $342.5 million haul meant a sequel was all but guaranteed.

Millar initially got involved with the movie and Chris Morgan was tapped to pen the screenplay. Ultimately, the Fast & Furious scribe's heavy workload saw him leave the project, with Evan Spiliotopoulos announced as his replacement.

Jolie was supposed to reprise her role as Fox, only to pull out of the sequel...prompting yet another rewrite. Work was halted and, in 2011, Wanted co-writers Michael Brandt and Derek Haas were enlisted to write their version. So, all these years later, why has Wanted 2 still not happened?

Talking to MovieWeb, Brandt blamed director Timur Bekmambetov for wanting to take the movie in a different direction, explaining how the creative clash led to the sequel being "left behind."

"We had an idea for a sequel. We pitched it, wrote it. And it seems like there was some real interest in the studio to make it. And then Timur, who directed the first one, absolutely was interested as well. But he had a kind of a different idea for what he wanted to do... And it's just one of those moments where somebody says the wrong thing in terms of our movie going forward, and the script that we'd written going forward."

"[He] suggested some changes. And it kind of took the wind out of the sails at the studio. And then, the studio's turnover is 'fast and furious,' to borrow a phrase. And I think the sequel of Wanted just kind of got left behind as other things started going forward."

"So there's a script, I'd love to see it get made, and I really liked it. I thought it was a proper sequel to the first one. But so far, the momentum has been lost. I do get a call every now and then from some producer who says, 'Can we reinvigorate this thing? And I say, 'Yeah, here's the script.' And they say, 'Wow, we love the script.' And I say, 'Cool, call the studio.' And then it seems to die there for some reason."

We've heard that Brandt and Haas' Wanted 2 was going to take place several years after the original with a new female protagonist. Bekmambetov, however, had an idea to put a new spin on the story and the creative standstill followed.

At this point, enough time has passed that the movie happening seems unlikely. There was a time when Millar's comic book properties were a hot commodity in Hollywood, but none of his Millarworld adaptations on Netflix really took off and movies like Nemesis and Starlight have fallen by the wayside.

Stay tuned for updates on the Wanted franchise as we have them.

It’s very loosely based off the comic of the same name

The curving bullet thing isn’t in the comics.

@TheVisionary25 - that comic was such a letdown. I'd read Ultimates and was excited for JG jones doing the artwork but Mark Millar wrote a mean-spirited, silly book in my opinion.

@BR74 - Mark Millar wrote something mean spirited?

Kidding aside , I do think the premise is interesting so you could do that as a basis and improve upon like the Boys did imo.

@TheVisionary25 - Agreed, I love the premise. Adam West as "the scariest man alive" who's been in-world retconned to be an goofy actor fits so well, especially when you hear him reading lines from TDKR:

I liked WANTED the first time i watched it, but honestly, Ive never wanted to watch it again. I have, when it was on TV at a friends or something, but one time felt like enough for me. I remember hearing about WANTED 2 and it just did nothing for me.

Didnt they do a video game with this too? I feel like maybe this franchise would be better as an MMORPG or a Hitman style or Assassins Creed like game.

The first movie was awesome. But (spoilers) killing off Angelina Jolie's character, was a bad idea, if they really wanted a sequel. There was never gonna be enough enthusiasm, for just James McAvoy coming back. 343 million on a 75 million dollar budget, was a relatively small profit for the studio.

@mpk1988 - Haha he's talking about Runaway with Tom Selleck and Gene Simmons, about future weapons with remote-controlled bullets. Kirstie Alley was the best thing in it.

The movie was fun but honestly in this era of The Boys , the comic premise lends itself to a miniseries or show imo.

You could do a more faithful take then the movie did and really flesh out the characters & lore so I hope that happens eventually.

Hell , you could even do an animated miniseries or show akin to Invincible.

I liked it and wish they did a second film right away. But I'd take one now with or without the same cast. If they did one now it would be about 20 years since it's release. They could just add some up and comer and make them the kid of James McAvoy. Film will always be cool with me because it gave us this gif

@IAmAHoot - I thought it was decent but idk where you would go from the end so not surprising that they have had issues coming up with the right script

I guess you could have Wesley take on a new character as a mentor but what else?.

I liked this, but the time for a sequel is long past. The movie I really liked with Jolie & wished for sequels was Salt, but I guess that's dead too.

I do not see how the actual graphic novel would have played as a movie since it was way out there, so the changes they made to the story were understandable but they told the story and it wrapped in a nice bow, sometimes it is okay to just let something be what it was and move on. Every movie that made a five dollar profit does not need a sequel
