WONDER WOMAN 1984 Director Says There's No Romantic Element To Diana Prince/Barbara Minerva Relationship

What little we know about Wonder Woman 1984 has indicated that Diana Prince and Dr. Barbara Minerva will have a close relationship, but director Patty Jenkins confirms that it won't be romantic in nature!

We would say that little is known about Wonder Woman 1984 after Warner Bros. hit the pause button on the sequel's marketing campaign, but that's not entirely true. The plot of Patty Jenkins's DC Comics film leaked online last year, and the response from those who have read them has been mixed.

We're not going to start delving into spoilers here, however, and those of you who have picked up possible signs of romance between Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and Dr. Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) are set to be disappointed.

As groundbreaking as that might have been to explore, it was never on the cards thanks to the unexpected return of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

"It might have [happened] in a different storyline," Jenkins told SFX (via Heroic Hollywood). "But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve [Trevor] coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. There wasn’t room for two for Diana."

Of all the superheroes that could embark on a lesbian relationship, Wonder Woman is perhaps best suited to that arc, and it's something the DC Animated Universe broached in Superman: Red Son. It wasn't meant to be, though, and it instead appears as if real LGBTQ+ representation in the DC Extended Universe is still a long way off.

Did anyone really think there would be?

Strike one in favor of female empowerment.

The entire story of a female-led superhero film - is about the male lead per the director. And it is a love story too - completely focused on the male lead.

This will surely help the cause of female superhero films.

@KingLeonidas - Is this comment for real? She didn't say the entire story was about this one relationship. You must be trolling

@Nightwing1015 - This is her direct quote from the article - "the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve."

@KingLeonidas - I think it's clear she was talking about the romantic storyline. Not the storyline for the whole film.

@KingLeonidas - who cares if Steve is getting a lot of focus. He is a character people like. Its not like its his movie. Diana is still the lead character. Like seriously In T2 Sarah Conner still kicks ass despite the T800 being there

@Nightwing1015 - She is talking very broadly then - she earlier says - "this storyline was so clearly about Steve [Trevor] coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. "

So again she is saying, the whole storyline is about Steve coming back, the whole story is about him and it is all a love story with him.

@dracula - Well, in a male led superhero film - the female love interest is a minor player for the most part. In a female-led superhero film - the male love interest gets a major role and co-lead status.

@KingLeonidas - Even if that's the case, (and the plot leak would suggest otherwise) having the film being motivated by that relationship doesn't mean that the "cause of female comic book movies" will be damaged. There are plenty of films and TV episodes that show male heroes in relationships. Not sure how that sets anyone back. It's not like she's going to give up being Wonder Woman for him.

@KingLeonidas - not sure i would call them all minor roles. There are a lot of superhero stories were the love interest play big roles.

@Nightwing1015 - It is a comparison point. Female love interests get to be just that, background players. Male love interests become the female superhero's equal.

Captain Marvel for that reason pointedly avoided giving Marvel a love interest. I don't know if Black Widow will have love interest in her film. Even if she does, the film will be all about Black Widow and not all about her love interest.

@KingLeonidas - "Female love interests get to be just that, background players. Male love interests become the female superhero's equal."

Well that depends on the film. Sometimes that is the case and sometimes it isn't. My point is it's far to early to tell if that's the case with this film. It's certainly too early to say that it'll "damage female comic book films" or anything like that. The last one was really successful and Jenkins really knew what she was doing. What's the chance that'll change with this one?

@dracula - Oscar-winning A list stars like Paltrow and Portman and Nyongo played background love interests for the most part. Also Rachel McAdams in Doctor Strange.

The Diana and Cheetah plotline is what I'm worried about the most. It has major Batman Forever Riddler/TASM Electro vibes.
