It became clear yesterday evening that there are a lot of people unhappy with WarnerMedia's decision to release its 2021 slate simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.
Wonder Woman 1984 is the first Warner Bros. film to head to the streaming platform, and the studio is said to be paying director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot a reported $10 million to make up for what they'll lose from their back-end deals on what the movie would have made at the box office.
You've known this since last night, of course, but now we know why!
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that, "WarnerMedia had to shovel tens of millions at Gal Godot and the other key players because the company wants a third in the series. But that sets the bar high."
Despite Wonder Woman 1984 being guaranteed to make a loss when it's released later this month, the studio obviously hopes the franchise will bounce back with a big box office haul for an eventual Wonder Woman 3.
Not everyone will receive what's being called "Wonder Woman money," however.
The trade adds that, "Sources say even Suicide Squad director James Gunn, who is platform-agnostic, was not pleased when the studio followed its shocking announcement by floating a lackluster formula for compensating him and other profit participants in the film."
This is gonna get messy, folks.
