Wonder Woman was the first bright spot in a floundering superhero cinematic universe and Captain Marvel is aiming to set its own records next month for Walt Disney and Marvel. In the current age of #MeToo, female-driven television and films are very hot commodities in Tinseltown as every studio looks to create and cement tentpoles around leading Hollywood actresses.
In a new interview, longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed that Fox could have set the trend with an "X-Women" film.
“I frankly wanted to see an X-Women movie,” Donner told Decider at theTelevision Critics Association’s 2019 winter tour. “I didn’t get it through. But I think that would be cool. I think — not to have no guys in it, you have to have guys in it — but to make instead of Charles and Magneto at the helm it’ll be whomever. Kitty Pryde and Illyana [Rasputin]. Something like that.”
Just recently, an in-development, all-female Marvel superhero team-up drama was canceled at ABC but that likely had more to do with the launch of Disney+. Perhaps the forthcoming streaming platform's live-action Scarlet Witch series will be a precursor to a similar concept?
