COMICS: Marvel Creators Not Allowed To Create New X-MEN Characters To Spite Fox

Fantastic Four is being cancelled ahead of the release of the new movie, and now legendary creator Chris Claremont (Nightcrawler) has revealed that writers and artists aren't allowed to come up with new characters because they will immediately become the property of Fox.

Some were sceptical about recent reports which claimed Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter had ordered the cancellation of the Fantastic Four comic book in a bid to damage the upcoming movie from 20th Century Fox and director Josh Trank. However, if you need further proof of the soured relations between Marvel and Fox look no further than here! Bleeding Cool have unearthed an interview with Chris Claremont - you can check it out by clicking below - and single out some comments from the writer about how things currently stand at Marvel in relation to the X-Men. "I have to say quite honestly as I understand it now the X department is forbidden to create new characters. Well… who owns them? All because all new characters become the film property of Fox. There will be no X-Men merchandising for the foreseeable future because, why promote Fox material?" This isn't the first time we've heard this and it does make sense in a strange sort of way. Why create new characters that a rival studio can make money from? On the other hand, you would think that the X-Men comic books and merchandise received a boost in sales thanks to the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but Marvel clearly don't see it that way...

take all upcoming ideas for fox owned properties and see if they can be slightly changed to fit into what marvel owns.

Wtf! Marvel and the movie industry is [frick]ed up with this whole spite Fox shot. It hurts the characters and fans, depriving us of new stories

It still baffles my mind that anyone can think that cancelling the FF comic book would hurt the movie. Now this makes more sense. the creators would basically be working for Fox for free.

You can tell that there is a plan to hinder Fox & Sony so that the rights revert back to Marvel.

Possibly in the next five years.

Marvel could just need to introduce the characters in other books and then import them to X titles. I wonder if that would work.

This shit is a little immature at times. Everyone involved should be comic book lovers and just want to make good films and comics with great stories

Well goddamn marvel, why don't you sell X-Men and Fantastic 4 to DC Comics while you're at it? I mean, they're gonna replace them with GOTG and the Inhumans once the movie hits.

I thought this was already happening. Seriously, it only makes sense especially since Marvel will never get the rights back to any of those characters in movie form. Once Marvel started pushing Inhumans as their disenfranchised characters -the writing was on the wall that new mutant characters would be lessened. I was already thinking Marvel might even recon some of the characters into Inhumans to establish them not as mutants.

FOX already has already enough characters to make movies on for decades anyhow. I don't think they are going to be hurt in any way with this decision.

This is the quickest and dirtiest way to get the rights back.

Kill all the mutants, for at least 3 years, devalue the mutant properties. Marvel needs some Disney muscle to get Rupert to give them back the rights, this isn't right that a film studio has such a grip on Marvel owned characters.

Don't be comparing Marvel to DC, Dc doesn't have the universe just yet, once they do, a lot will change for them to

@Brianiac13 yet they are creating plenty of new spider-man characters, so sony has free range to use those. Plus Marvel owns the merchandising rights to Spider-Man. They want the tasm series to succeed. Marvel and Sony have a great relationship.

But on to the actual subject, this is really petty and stupid. Hooray for marvel hindering what writers can do.

@Brainiac13

I doubt Marvel is getting any rights back from this. The idea is not to give any more assets to competitors for free. I doubt Fox or Sony would be willing to fork out the cash Marvel wants for all this new stuff.

I don't get what Marvel is trying to do? If the movies it self keep making money. The company's are just going keep making them and keep the rights. Even if there is no comics. They can always come up with storylines them selves if it's not from comics. It's like they want to stay away from movies that are not there's even if they are big hits.

To me if you love the comics and actually read comics you should not support the Fox-Men or the Fox-Four movies plain and simple.

I think its a given Spider-Man will go back to Marvel, TASM2 didn't perform to the studio's expectations, and I think Sinister Six will bomb, Venom I think will be decent.
