Rupert Wyatt Set To Direct Channing Tatum As GAMBIT

Rupert Wyatt Set To Direct Channing Tatum As GAMBIT

We've known that Channing Tatum would be playing the crimson-eyed card-flinging mutant for a while, but now EW reports that the X-Men spin-off finally has a director: Rupert Wyatt!

According to EW, 20th Century Fox has hired Rupert Wyatt (The Gambler, Rise of the Planet of The Apes, The Escapist) to helm their solo Gambit movie, which will star Channing Tatum as Cajun mutant, Remy LeBeau.

This won't be the character's first live-action incarnation of course, as he was played by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine - but fans were left underwhelmed by both the movie and that interpretation of Gambit, and have been looking forward to seeing some justice done.

Aside from the star (and now the director) we don't know a whole lot about this, but Tatum has told us to expect a different take on the typical origin story, and that the plot will play around with the usual tropes associated with superhero movies.

Tatum is also producing the film along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg. Gambit is set for release on Oct. 7, 2016.

All of Wyatt's films are pretty enjoyable, even the flat THE GAMBLER last year. THE ESCAPIST [frick]ing rules though.

Directors who've passed on the project: Bennett Miller (MONEYBALL, FOXCATCHER), Darren Aronofsky (BLACK SWAN), Gareth Evans (THE RAID, THE RAID 2) and almost a dozen more.

Gambit doesn't need a solo movie.

I think Tatums a great guy, but would rather get a better actor to play Gambit… Gambit was prob my favorite Xmen character next to Wolverine and Night Crawler and I hope they do his character justice. Don't make a Channing tatum movie and call it Gambit. Make a Gambit movie where Tatum is a believable Gambit.

Damn, all of the superhero films of 2016 are looking to all be good.

With him directing Gambit, I think it's fair to say it's looks more interesting than Dr Strange.

Woah that's a higher level of talent than what I was expecting for this movie 0_0

Doctor Strange looks way better than this, imo

Like, not even comparable

Only Marvel Zombies will find a way to shit on this. Loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Tatum has started to become a real actor out of nowhere the past couple of years.

@DrKinsolving

You can thank the Wachowski's inability to direct a movie, actors, or write any semblance of a good script for Jupiter Ascending.

I heard his work on THE GAMBLER was less-than-stellar, but his work on ROTPOTA gives me confidence in this decision.

Gambit doesn't need a solo movie, but he's getting one with an awesome director and a capable actor so I'm happy! :D

@superspecialawesomeguy Tatum has been going after a lot of top-tier directors. Look at my post on the top of the page.

@JamesMann @DrKinsolving I thought Tatum was the only one to come out of JUPITER ASCENDING unscathed. That film was such a disappointment, especially after the ambitious epic, CLOUD ATLAS.

Wolverine, Deadpool, and Gambit are like the three most deserving of a solo in the X-Men universe so...

Rise of the Planet of the apes was good but not enough to sell me on him as a director. Lets see.

I really don't get why Tatum is considered a Top actor

He's cool, he actually cracks me up in some of his comedies but a top actor or a real actor?

@TheCardist Check out THE ESCAPIST on Netflix. Easily his best film and his directorial debut!

Nice. Gives me hope that this will be a winner. Deadpool and Apocalypse are looking awesome, so would be awesome to see FOX go 3-for-3 with their X-films next year.

Level of directors people.

Dr Strange's director hasn't done a film on Wyatt's level. Hell Dr Strange's director did that shitty The Day the Earth Stood Still remake.

Wyatt did Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Wyatt is a superior director people. Let's stop sucking on Marvel for one second.

@masterchief12

I dunno, I think Doctor Strange is going to be a game changer for Marvel. I remember reading a few years back that Marvel claimed Doctor Strange will be like the new "Iron Man" of the MCU. I'm looking forward to it.

I agree, Tatum was the little speck of a bright light in JA. It was more disappointing for me because I loved Cloud Atlas which the Wachowskis were involved in but didn't direct. I thought they finally got their Matrix mojo back.

@DrKinsolving I don't think he's a top-tier actor like Tilda Swinton, Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, etc, but he's a top-tier movie star and has presence and charisma (depending on the project).

It helps that he's diversifying his portfolio with comedies (21 JUMP STREET, MAGIC MIKE, drama (FOXCATCHER) and auteur-driven projects (Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT, Coen Bros. upcoming HAIL, CAESAR!).

As much as I love Sinister (the guy who is doing Dr. Strange directed that) it isn't on the same level as Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
