While we did get a teaser trailer for The New Mutants last year, it quickly became apparent that the movie was in trouble when Fox ordered extensive reshoots which were set to change the tone and add new characters. That first look wasn't met with an overly positive response as it came across like a generic horror movie starring some clueless teenagers but it's clear that's the least of its problems.
Many fans believe it will never see the light of day and while Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg has revealed that the rating could end up going either way, he also confirmed that the reshoots haven't taken place yet and it doesn't sound like Fox is even sure what sort of movie Josh Boone will deliver.
"It’s the kind of movie that could go R, or it could be a hard PG-13. As I was saying before in terms of subgenres or the genre, it is obviously teased as a horror film, and most horror films these days are R-rated, but it stars a very young cast, so we’ll see. It really is what the movie wants to be. The studio is open to either rating… Traditionally, superhero movies are PG-13 other than Logan and the Deadpool movies, and generally, horror films are R-rated, so we’ll see where this one falls. It is a very scary, edgy movie."
While it's possible that The New Mutants will ultimately meet that August release date, it honestly wouldn't be all that surprising for Fox to just scrap the movie at this stage, especially with that Disney merger on the horizon.
