LOGAN: Hugh Jackman Details Sabretooth's Cut Cameo And Why He Never Donned The Classic Costume

Hugh Jackman talks about Sabretooth's cut cameo in Logan and reveals the things he wanted to do as Wolverine but just couldn't make work, including the character's classic comic book costume.

Collider recently had the opportunity to catch up with Hugh Jackman to talk all things Logan and dropped some very interesting details about what might have been in the movie. For starters, he weighs in on that rumoured Liev Schreiber cameo as Sabretooth from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a movie Logan referenced an awful lot. As cool as it sounds, it appears as if it just got lost in the shuffle.

"There was a story point where they go to Vegas," Jackman reveals, "you know how they go to the Oklahoma casino? They go there and at this
point Sabretooth is running like a major casino and really, really wealthy, and really kind of runs a town, and sort of respectable in a way but is still himself. That idea was thrown around, I forgot about that." That would have been a lot of fun and while it wasn't necessarily the best use for the character, it would have made fans very happy.

Jackman's tenure as Wolverine is officially at an end and when talk turned to his regrets, the actor specifically mentioned that not being able to don the comic book costume and a missed opportunity with a certain storyline from the comic book rank highest among those which play on his mind.

"There were a couple of things I couldn’t work out how to do. Fans always say, ‘When are we gonna see you in the blue and yellow spandex? We’ve gotta see that shot!’ We tried a little bit in The Wolverine, it didn’t happen—on that plane at the end he opens up a box and there’s the suit, I think that ended up getting cut. So the suit was one thing but we just couldn’t work out how to do it, so if anyone can work that out you go for it. The other idea that I always loved was the idea in the comics that every year on Logan’s birthday, his brother comes and beats the crap out of him. I just thought that was such a cool very fun idea and very in keeping to those characters. His birthday present was just a beating and that’s the only time he sees him (laughs). I kept saying, ‘Jim can we put that in?’ and he goes ‘Eh this is not that movie.’ But anyway."

What do you guys think of Jackman's comments? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

@ConnorHawkeye - what if Sabretooth was the leader of Eden saving mutants at the end? We would see a mature/reformed Sabretooth who reconciles with his brother Logan before he dies. Sabretooth is entrusted to train and protect X-23 kinda like Joel and his brother in The Last of Us if you played that game before.

@JH24 - But that's not comic accurate! And the diehards want comic accuracy. Something like this would contradict the basis of their argument.

There really is no pleasing.

@JH24 - I kinda like that idea, but that's just not Victor. I would've liked for them to sort of reconcile in a complicated way, but having Victor reform completely would be too out of character. Having him SLIGHTLY reform and then having X-24 as the villain would've showed the very complicated nature of Wolverine and how he could've gone in multiple different directions.

@Termin8er - the reason i wanted to see a reformed Victor is because of the older Magneto and Charles conversation in Days of Future PAst where they said they spend too much time fighting each other and they wished they could get that time back. I also think it woulda been cool if Logan and Victor both fought X-24 got rekted and X-23 finished him off.

@TheRealTomServo - lol thats funny. Comicbook accuracy in the least accurate comic book universe. Hah!

@ConnorHawkeye - What about this:

"The other idea that I always loved was the idea in the comics that every year on Logan’s birthday, his brother comes and beats the crap out of him. I just thought that was such a cool very fun idea and very in keeping to those characters. His birthday present was just a beating and that’s the only time he sees him (laughs). I kept saying, ‘Jim can we put that in?’ and he goes ‘Eh this is not that movie.’ But anyway."

What if, instead of the gang bangers trying to steal the rims off his limo, in the beginning Sabretooth shows up while he sleeping, they get into a big fight, Victor beats the shit out of him(while receiving a lesser beating himself by Logan), then says "Happy birthday little brother. Than takes off. That's the cameo. I think that could have fit great.

@Termin8er - Victor's actually VERY heroic in the Exiles books. Granted it's not 616 Victor, but it does show that like Magneto he's always had the capacity for good under different circumstances.

@JH24 - Yes! Great point, that "all those years wasted fighting each other Charles, to have a precious few of them back" line brought tears to my eyes. I would've liked that kind of closure, but you could never have him go full blown good guy. Would've been cool to have them go up against X-24 and have them die fighting side by side.

@CapnSquintyEyes - Can't say I've read that, but that sounds cool. But that's kind of what I'm saying, he can be redeemed, but only so much. Victor seems to enjoy doing awful things a lot more than Erik does, but he also has that bit of good in him.

@Termin8er - The early books make for a quality read, lots of fun alternate versions of characters and storylines I always thought would make a good show but now would read as a Legends of Tomorrow copycat. Blink is the main character in that run and she has a great daughter/father dynamic with him. It gets really interesting when almost all the other characters are wary of him because he is that vicious, awful guy in their timelines. I definitely recommend it.

What it really comes down to for me is the X-men franchise has done some really great casting but the characters tend to be written shallow or just poorly. I put Liev's Sabretooth in that category and I'd like to see them give him a better part while they still can. I don't think the Wolverine: Origins version was irredeemable, persay, he even ended on an antihero note that would have fit well in Logan's dystopian setting. And really, if they can fix what they did to Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool initially, they can damn sure make Sabretooth cool!
Termin8er
Termin8er - 5/23/2017, 8:50 AM
@CapnSquintyEyes - Exactly! Liev's Victor was interesting but didn't get enough to do. I always thought he was going to come back for more. Would've really liked for him to show up in Logan, even if it was just for a little while. I think as the franchise is letting go of Wolverine and putting Charles and Erik on the backburner, we'll get the fully developed characters we were deprived of when Wolverine overshadowed everyone as the breakout star (as he should've been, but still)
