Darren Aronofsky Still Won't Discuss Wolverine 2

Despite being confirmed as the director of the Wolverine sequel by Hugh Jackman himself, Aronofsky was still hesitant to talk about the project ay a recent Q & A. He also talks briefly about his involvement in rebooting Batman before Chris Nolan took over..

Word came to us from Deadline recently that deals were very close to being done for Darren Aronofsly to helm Wolverine 2. Then Hugh Jackman seemed to confirm that things were indeed on the move, and Aronofsly would be in the directors chair. despite that, Aronofsky is still keeping schtum.

When asked about it at this year’s American Express Screen Talks at the London Film Festival, the director would not reveal if Wolverine 2 would be his next project. All he did say was..

“I’d really like to direct a movie where I’m not the only person in the room who wants to make it. It would be a really exciting prospect to take on a product and attempt to do it well. I’d be extremely game to give it a shot.”

Aronofsky had been talking previously about the other films he has made, and how he would like to have a go at a bigger, studio picture. Is that Wolverine 2? It LOOKS that way. We haven't had any reports to the contrary at least. Its just strange that Aronofsky and Fox are still so hesitant to speak about it. But one CBM he would talk about was Batman. If you remember, Aronofsky was in line to bring the Caped Crusader back to cinema screen after the disastrous Joel Schumaker incident. His take would have been back to basics, and apparently even more "real world" than the version Chris Nolan ended up brining us..

“I took the writing job and pitched what we called a low-tech, duct-tape version of Batman where basically, the Batmobile was going to be a Lincoln Continental with a diesel bus engine dropped in it. It was intended to be the exact opposite to where the Batman films had gone.”

“The bottom line was, at the time I wasn’t ready to do something like Batman, and I really wanted to get The Fountain made.”

Of all the FOX MOVIES we want this one to be good!

Wont go on about the last one (lol) just hoping they do a real Wolverine film this time!

As it is, I refuse to ever go and watch that other joke of an X-movie from FOX ever called First Class... but have high hopes they will keep this movie true to the character... last straw if they don't lol!

@DEADPOOL72 - I think Hugh is taking some advise from Reynolds and deciding to keep it close to source material this time. As long as the Silver Samurai is in it you can't really mess it up.

I'm so glad Aronofsky is making Wolverine. Also soooo glad he didn't make Batman: Year One. Don't be fooled by the fact that Frank Miller wrote the script; it SUCKED! Don't believe me? Read it yourself!

He acts like the high tech approach of Nolan is a bad thing. I like Aronofsky and all but his Batman would have killed the character. His Batman would not have held in comparison to the CBM of that time (the first two spidermans, the first two x-men, and the rest) Batman Begins set up the character to what he needed to be, in order to show why Batman is the most realistic hero. Agree with me or not but the tech of Batman makes it realistic for him to survive combat on the streets.
But wolverine will be great for Arofonsky because Hugh Jackman will be there and it will be a personal story in Japan so its a great film for Arofonsky.

@WorldsGreatestdetective - I might be misreading it, but I don't think he was bad-mouthing the Nolan versions. He was just comparing his take to the latter Batman films directed by Schumacher.

In any case, it definitely would have been interesting to see what Aronofsky would have done with the Batman franchise. Who knows, we might have had even better films than Nolan's (unlikely, but we'll never know for certain).

I wait with bated breath for the confirmation of him directing Wolverine 2 though.

He is going to want to get paid. They seem to be negotiating at the moment? Hugh Jackman is all for it, Aronofsky wants to prove that he can make an amazing movie out of any source material. They are waiting for his new movie to debut. He is trying to promote his film and people are preoccupied with what he may be doing a year from now? I would be a bit insulted and a bit mum when questioned as well if I had a movie about to debut that may determine my value as a director in the future to come. I hope that he does it, to get the wolverine that I so desperately want to see. Hugh Jackman is perfect, give us a good director. I named my son Logan after Wolverine. Since when is his real name James? That makes me sad. Logan is still a better name huh?

... Hmmm... And would they have dropped the whole cape and mask aspect too and gone with a....
"Trench coat"?!?!?! dun dun dunnnnnnnnnn

If a superhero who makes the jump to film is rooted more closely to reality than others of a genre then sure, thats how the film should be..

But if it means deconstructing parts of what make the character who he is (Batman's wealth, tech, gadgets etc) then you lose its soul.

Speaking of Wolverine,
I dont like 20th century FOX or their takes on superhero films.
They have a tendancy that a supervillian should wear a "big long coat" an not a costume because these are movie-goers we're dealing with...NOT comic book readers.

< they could be waiting to see how first class does? >

Either way, i didnt like Wolverine (an im in a minority with not liking Hugh Jackman too)
I wont go see the sequel :-<

anything Aronofsky does is going to be done with great thought, care, and ambition. he's really the only aspect making me care about this movie, and it's sure to be unlike anything we've ever seen from a CBM

i've got to respectfully disagree with Elle1980 above. even though i wouldn't have wanted to see a Batman in a lincoln, or in a trench coat like you joked, i don't think the money and the gadgets were the SOUL of the character. i think they were (very fortunate) means to his end that set up the mission. i think the heart and soul is tragedy, and vengeance vs justice, and taking his city back. and i think Nolan's films have done that kind of deconstructing/reconstructing brilliantly
