XMO:W - The Critics Arent All Wrong--or Right!

XMO:W - The Critics Arent All Wrong--or Right!

X MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is nowhere close to the debacle of X3 . . . BUT it's still not on par with X1 or 2. Especially the adamantium bonding segments. X2's flashback deployed more drama in that few second flashback than several minutes in this film.

Review Opinion
By CBMcontributor - May 01, 2009 05:05 PM EST

The film tried to do too much. Key scenes left me wanting more or worse - thinking, no this doesn't work.

If there is one character that should have been utilized more, it's definitely Gambit. There was a chemistry between him and Wolverine--and between HJ and TK.

Logan and Kayla's 'story' was really sweet but too brief. That's just a personal opinion. I'd happily sacrifice/shorten a few car chase, blow up action scenes for a little more interaction between them. Better yet, keep the action and lengthen the film by 15 minutes for 'both' kinds of action. [know what I mean?]

Blob and Wraith could have been left out completely and you'd never miss them.

It's unfair of me to bring Marvel canon into this for too many reasons to list here but I'm biting my tongue hard not too for key elements in the story. Wolvie canon-heads know what I'm talking about.

I do, for the most part, love HJ's portrayal of Logan/Wolverine. It's close how I portray him in my movie verse/AU fanfiction writings. I could have appreciated a little more portrayal of his internal struggle between man and beast. He seems a bit too victimized in a few scenes.

Liev's interpretation of Sabretooth is top notch. Somebody go back, chop Tyler Maine out of X1, insert Liev.

No way does the film deserve some of the low ratings I've seen and no, it's not better than Iron Man. Out of 10, I give it a 6.5. I'll go see it again and I'll buy the DVD.

I had an issue or two with the story side of it as well, but this board is quickly reminding me of the Transformers:ROTF boards.

shibazz, sithenor : What is your issue with the characters? What are you looking for? You looking for more comedy from Wade? More carnage from Victor? Less clothing from Emma? Did you expect to see the "uniforms" from the comics? I bet you complained about the "look" as soon as you saw X1 and realized that the team wasn't in head-to-toe spandex...so they "look the part".

InFamous: Good to see life in your mom's basement hasn't hurt your ability to listen and understand another mans opinion.

So can we all atleast agree that Ryan Renolds was awesome as deadpool? To me thats the biggest thing that came out of this movie.

You know what's funny? People are always complaining in these blogs, saying "these aren't the actual origins". The best part about that, to me, is that they speak in run-on sentences with awful grammar. They spell words wrong all of the time, which leads me to believe that they are still in grade school. Now, if this is true, how do they even know what Wolverine's origin actually is? The answer to that, my friends, is that they don't actually know Wolverine's origins, and are just bitching for the sake of bitching.

If I'm wrong, and the people that are being retarded and can't spell for shit are actually in their 20's or 30's, please let me know. Then I can make fun of you mercilessly for being so dim-witted and uneducated.

@deephitter, good call on the "living in your mother's basement" thing. It's probably true.

For me this movie was like the BAtman and Robin flick. I mean that every single character was change into an "Opposite " version of themselves. Emma/small boobs. cyclops/heat blasts. Deadpool/rediculous Sabertooth/smaller than wolerine? wraith/no common sense. Gambit/short blob/not intimidating and on and on. Do you remember how Mr. Freeze smoked a cigar? and Robin was a man? this was the same for me and thats just Lamo! Still love it though cuz its a comic book movie. But even FF2 nailed the characters better than this one except for dooms voice. We let them get away with this and just wait to see what happens to the next fox/marvel movie.

Yeah SHIBAZZ @ your right, what im thinking is, why the FRAK did HUGH JACKMAN (who loves the character, by the way), have no say in this, or REYNOLDS either for that matter!??? An actors do have says in such matters!!! Infact MARVEL has to approve everything don't they???? It seems DC/WARNERS have UP'ED THE ANTI, an MARVEL movies (WARZONE, etc), are screwing up big time, cept MARVELS own films (IRONMAN, HULK was awesome, though i dont want ULTIMATE lame FURY in AVENGERS but wont go on about that lol), But end of the day isn't it MARVELs fault too??? They have a say how the movies, FOX etc are done an have to approve?? Anyway, it was a okay movie but it could've been made 10 times better!!!! It felt like a RUSHED job done by a 5 year old! : D

not the story.

I thought all the characters were well done, aside from wraith being poorly acted, blob being made into comic relief, and deadpool being...well, y'know.

I feel like every character's part in the movie was cut short to make room for the sabertooth/wolverine story, which is extremely frustrating for me because they do almost nothing with it at the end. We all knew that sabertooth couldn't die because he's in the first XMen movie, but they could've come up with a more creative ending.

I was very plesently surprised with the movie.
i thought the casting was really good. All characters in the movie had the perfect amount of screen time, after all it was the WOLVERINE movie.
The only things that bugged me were
1)wolverine was never animal like, every rendition of wolverine's past has him go balistic after the adamantium bonding process, killing at least like 100 ppl and all bloody(like in the X2 flashback) and still be PG13, it make wolvie who he is.
2)Where did CYCLOPS get his ruby glasses? He doesnt meet profX till the end(who made them in the comics).

FOX is bending you over an your taking it if you think WOLVERINE was a good thought out movie!!! Come on, like i said if PETER JACKSON done this to LOTRs ppl would go Ape shite!!! Its like making a BATMAN movie where he lives and fights crime in The South Pole or something!!! Lol, it was a good action movie, but that's it as a X-MEN movie it was dire!!! Oh an my gf liked it and she hates comicbook movies!!! Yes that says it all lol!!! Like i said DARTH VADER is LOGANs & CREEDs Father!!! The FOX be with you!

Well said LEEE777. And it isnt juz how they f'd up Deadpool too. It was an ordinary campy movie which is absolutely why i agree with the 6.5 rating of the reviewer.

For a seasoned fighter, Wolverine didnt even check for wounds on Silverfox? He juz saw blood and cried? wow... that's deep! And he can smell danger miles away and couldnt distinguish Silverfox's blood from a dead animal's? He didnt even bury Silverfox? That's how shallow this movie is.

TDK, Batman Begins, Hulk and IRonman didnt rely on cheap antics and special effects nor popularity. Aside from being respectful to the source material, creators and the characters, those films had great directors, actors and plot material.

Wolverine? They had great actors but thats about it.

The movie was very good but not on par with Ironman and TDK. I feel that Hood made the same mistakes Raimi made with Spidey 3...too ambitious. The more characters I heard about the more concerned I became. Each added character had some lonely 30 something wetting his pants with glee. In some ways we are responsible for this when we clamor for our favorite characters so loudly. Give me Ironman or TDK done well with "basically" 1 protagonist and one antagonist rather than a watered down circus. The same elements that make good cinema haven't changed in decades and they apply to comic movies too. What lacks in many comic book movie adaptations is DISCIPLINE. Overall good critique of the movie. I'll see it again.

Rediculous? Deadpool has always been ridiculous, thats the whole point.
He spent a year in the comic book fighting T-Ray who was supposed to be the real Wilson and then at the end it turns out its Deadpool.
Real Deadpool fans are used to being jerked around like this.

So here we have two wilsons in the movie by the other Deadpool ending where the un-changed wilson picks up the head of XI wilson.. perfect.
That should have been the only ending IMHO it leaves a lot open for the only origin movie that matters.. Deadpool Origins.
At the end of a movie with Deadpool in it you should be wondering what the hell happened. Thats what he's wondering too..

@twocents
I agree 110%. Comic book movies need to follow the example of movies like 007 or Indiana Jones; they have one main protagonist who is the center of the entire film, and only enough supporting characters so that they can all be fully developed without distracting from the protagonist and his story. More to the point, they should add to his development. XMO:W makes the mistake of introducing static characters but treating them like dynamic ones. Admittedly, I was geeked to see Gambit and the Blob, but all they really do is distract you from Wolverine. As a result, we end up learning little about Wolverine that we didn't already know from the X-trilogy. X2 is really the only superhero flick that does a decent job at juggling multiple protagonist. I hope they get it right with Magneto's origin.

@KimVengeance
You are so right. I was so frustrated with Deadpool's story until I saw the post-cred ending. That really turned evrything around for me.
