X-MEN: Details About Bryan Singer's On-Set Behavior Include Why Halle Berry Told Him To "Kiss My Black Ass"

The Hollywood Reporter has shared a fascinating new piece about the legacy of the X-Men franchise in the wake of a series of sexual abuse allegations against director Bryan Singer, and in there are plenty of jaw-dropping behind the scenes stories. It's no secret that his behaviour on set was erratic, and that reportedly included late arrivals, mood swings, and explosive tantrums.

The trade explains that it wasn't uncommon for Rebecca Romijn to spend hours being painted up as Mystique before filming, only for Singer to decide on a whim he didn't need her. Interestingly, it's also said that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was "dispatched to ensure that someone was keeping Singer in line."

Things got worse during production of X2: X-Men United, though. It's said that Singer was incapacitated after taking a narcotic, and when producer Tom DeSanto attempted to halt shooting, the filmmaker insisted it continue. That led to a botched stunt on the X-Jet leaving Hugh Jackman bleeding. When the cast were forced to return to work the next day, they (minus Sir Ian McKellen and Romijn) approached Singer in costume and threatened to quit if DeSanto left.

It was at this point Halle Berry told the director, "You can kiss my Black ass."

The trade's story includes more damaging allegations about Singer sexually abusing or taking advantage of young men (in exchange for roles in the X-Men movies, for example), but producer Lauren Shuler Donner summed up his behaviour as a filmmaker perfectly.

"He was very nervous and he would act out when he was insecure, as many people do. But his way of acting out would be to yell and scream at everybody on the set. Or walk off the set or shut down production," she recalls. "You have to understand, the guy was brilliant, and that was why we all tolerated him and cajoled him. And if he wasn't so f***ed up, he would be a really great director."

What are your thoughts on these latest claims about Singer?

Now Bryan Singer, surprised he hasnt been cancelled, its been a few years since these kind of stuff has been brought up, but he is still working.

Good on the cast for sticking by Jackman

On the Rebecca Romijn thing, its [frick]ed up that she had to get painted for nothing, but really thats more bad planning than Singer doing something bad. Like film making is a creative process, sometime you plan something one way and you end up doing it another.

Wonder why they all agreed to work with him again for Days Of Future Past, guessing a mix of a decent pay check for minimal screen time and seeing old friends again being worth it

@dracula - ???
That's like saying Kevin Spacey isn't cancelled, there was a huge piece in 2019 from The Atlantic about how Singer exploited his power to molest under-age boys that effectively killed whatever career he had left. He was fired from Red Sonja, and a year earlier was fired from Bohemian Rhapsody towards the tail-end of filming by Fox; with all post-production being done by Dexter Fletcher. His career is, rightfully, over.

@tmp3 - I wish I was as optimistic as you, but (barring incarceration) I don't think there's ever going to be a name so toxic that somebody won't work with them. Some Saudi financier will get excited at the prospect of having the X-Men guy filming their personal passion project. Some producer somewhere will imagine they're the one to enable Singer's comeback.

There's always someone shameless enough if you're famous enough.

@Spock0Clock - Sounds doubtful since you still need international partners, and Singer sounds effectively black-listed from all American productions at this point

@dracula - If he did the same to Jennifer Lawrence, I an understand why she was unhappy doing this role.

"You have to understand, the guy was brilliant"

First of all, this should never be an excuse.

Second of all, his X-Men films sucked.

Third of all, bringing him back later in the franchise (or even after X1) knowing his behavior on set puts some of the blame on you Lauren.

@TheManWithoutFear - Exactly, I f**king hate how there are so many people in this world who get a "pass" just because they are super talented, I don't care if the world misses out on great art if the guy making it is an absolute prick.. that goes for every single person that Hollywood and other places have let off the hook.

@TheManWithoutFear - it’s part of the reason they never seek help. Everyone should be held accountable for doing terrible things

“ Second of all, his X-Men films sucked.”

Apocalypse, yes. The rest were actually pretty great. Despite him being a scumbag.

@TheManWithoutFear - and...brilliant wouldn't even be in the top 100 adjectives this guy deserves to be called. Not a single product of his has ever blown me away or shoot him that kind of praise
