Oscar Isaac Talks Comic Book Inspiration And More For X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Oscar Isaac talks here about bringing Apocalypse to life on the big screen, weighing in on the comics which have inspired this take on the villain and why he's, "definitely not going to be everyone’s favorite version of Apocalypse, but he’s my favorite version of Apocalypse."

After wowing moviegoers with impressive performances in the likes of A Most Violent Year and Ex Machina, Oscar Isaac's career looks set to explode following the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and X-Men: Apocalypse. In a recent interview with Black Film, he was asked about how it feels to have the trailer for the latter play in front of another movie he's starring in right now (you know, the one which is likely to be 2015's biggest). "It’s very cool," he said. "It’s going to be in front of Star Wars when they show the trailers in theaters. I’m very excited. We’ll see how many people realize that Apocalypse and Poe are the same person." Asked how it feels to be taking on two significant roles in such huge and higly anticipated movies, Isaac added: "It’s great because they are so vastly different from each other. They are completely different characters. I’m just having fun at this time and I’m really thankful and blessed that I’m getting the opportunities to play different roles and let’s people know that they never know what to expect from me."

As for what's inspired his take on Apocalypse, it sounds like there will be something for everyone:

"Depends which comic you are talking about. There’s X-Factor, there’s X-Men, there’s The Age of Apocalypse, there’s the animated series, there’s X-Men: Evolution, so when someone says Apocalypse without referring a comic book, it’s a very general question. They may want to state which is their Apocalypse first. He’s definitely not going to be everyone’s favorite version of Apocalypse, but he’s my favorite version of Apocalypse. It’s something from the 80s mixed in with something new. They either create a backstory that he was this mutant from Ancient Egypt that found this technology and they explore that story or they send him to another universe where he’s more powerful than he’s ever been. He’s turned all these other X-Men into villains. There are different ways that artists and creative people get the chance to explore his story on a massive scale if they do. In this one, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg took the inspiration from many different sources, many different versions of Apocalypse throughout the ages and found the one that we thought was the most interesting."

While we all know that it's not essential for an actor to be a fan of the source material, you may be glad to know that Isaac then went on to talk in detail about his love of the character and stories he's been heavily featured in. This is great to hear, and if you've seen any of the Isaac's movies, you'll definitely know that he's going to kick ass and steal the show in X-Men: Apocalypse next year.

"I love Apocalypse. I grew up collecting X-Factor. I remember when the first comic book came out, and for me, especially because I grew up in a religious household, I knew about the book of revelations, the second coming, the Apocalypse, and then you see this comic book character that is supposed to embody all of these ideas. For some people they just thought he was this big blue guy and it was survival of the fittest, but for me, that was less interesting. The most interesting part for me was the Blibical aspect and end of the world and the revelation of the way things were before."

He's WAAAAY TOO TALENTED NOT TO OWN THIS ROLE! Love that he's a real fan. I have no doubt he'll do his job and wow us in the part. When has he ever given a bad performance?

@Th0rOdinson at the end of the day, most non-human comic book villians have the same motivations. "Cleanse the earth, rebuild in my image, humans aren't worthy, I'm gonna change everything, rule with an iron fist"

They all talk the same shit lol

Filmmakers just have to find a way to make it different and intriguing each time they use an otherworldly villian with cliche intentions; do it as best as they can

Apocalypse is starting to be more interesting to me than Civil War.

Slightly because I'm a villains guy and Apocalypse is my favorite X-Men villain and I like Oscar Isaac and I like the Egyptian influenced design Apocalypse has.

But I still hate how he will be up against basically X-Men Babies and will be defeated by them. Shit ain't funny mutha[frick]er.

Yeah, I'm looking forward this, the cast is just too good

Ex Machina was such a cool film, it had a real Kubrick vibe to it too, which is hard to do, imo. I'd love to see Alex Garland take on a CBM one day

And Isaac was awesome in Ex Machina, so was Alicia Vikander

I feel like as much as Marvel fans hate Fox....

Both Marvel and Fox are doing their big baddies terribly. Both Thanos and Apocalypse are sort of looking meh.

Thanos has done nothing in the MCU besides order his minions to get Infinity Stones. Plus Thanos's first MCU meeting will involve Thanos using the Infinity Gauntlet. That's [frick]ing stupid. So you can't have him be a baddie first? He needs his toys to win? That's like starting off Darkseid with him solving the anti-life equation in the DCCU. It's like starting of Doc Ock with the Sinister Six in the MCU. It's like Green Goblin killing Gwen in him and Spidey's first meeting or Joker killing Robin in him and Batman's first meeting. You just don't do it because we've had no relationship between the villain and our heroes.

One reason Darth Vader is one of the most beloved villains is basically we saw him in action. We weren't built up to him. We saw him, he kicked ass. Thanos has down nothing and they are wasted their load in his first confrontation with the Avengers with him using the Infinity Gauntlet.

(OPINION TIME: Then again I don't care for Thanos because he's a poor man's Darkseid. Starlin created him to solely be Marvel's Darkseid. He's actually a shit character thinking more and more. He does all for Mistress Death and guess what, Mistress Death loves Deadpool. It's like Darkseid doing everything for Granny Goodness but she loving Boaster Gold. Thanos is basically the nerd in high school going after the hot cheerleader who he will never get.)

Apocalypse is going up against X-Men Babies as I said.

I don't want to comment on Darkseid because considering 90% of the DCCU rumors are bullshit, we have no [frick]ing idea what they will do.

I am, an x men fan first. First comic box I got, had wolverine #7 in it, I think (he is swinging from a tree onto a jeep on cover). Since then, I have been all about wolverine n my x men. With that being said, I believe my opinion is close to my heart, and understand it is an OPINION.

I enjoy the x men movies, but don't feel like my childhood is truly being represented. But that is 100% okay with me. I understand art, I understand change. And the x men movies started all of this. Singer made these movies when Hollywood didn't want them, or did he have the freedom n money that he does now, which is why the last 3(which includes the wolverine) have been better.

Apocalypse is my favorite villain EVER!! I literally have every comic he has been in. I feel that singer and Isaac are really going to nail him, even if the movie fails. Everything I have heard, sounds like the apocalypse I know n love. I have trust and confidence in them.

@JoJo1982

Yea that's my point. We haven't had Thanos as the villain in any Avengers films. In his first film as the villain in Infinity Wars, he will use the Infinity Gauntlet. It's poor planning IMO and wasteful. Why should we be threaten by a villain that the audience has yet to see in action? I compared it to Vader because we saw Vader in action from the first film. We've seen Thanos's do nothing but end credits in the 2 Avengers films, cameo in GOTG and he's the villain using the Infinity Gauntlet in Infinity Wars.

Picture this. We have 2 Spidey films with Goblin in the after credits scene but not in the film. 3rd Spidey film he's in, first thing he does is kill Gwen. That's shitty. Why? We have no build up, no conflict, no connection, no previous meetings between our hero and villain for us to care for this villain who we've seen do nothing and when we've seen him do something we are suppose to care because he does it in the comics even though if you are a moviegoer, you don't read comics and don't know the connection between the Avengers and Thanos.

It's like Vader in the background of Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back and we don't see him do anything; first thing he does in Return of the Jedi "I AM YOUR FATHER". We have no connection and the film is trying to make us care when again we have no connection from hero and villain.

"big blue guy"

I'm pretty sure he's gray, not blue, but well, I guess Beast, Mystique and Nightcrawler are not enough blue people in this movie.

They've acquired a great actor to play a role that people would pair with anybody. And even without a booming, animated series, baritone voice, I wouldn't want to be near him. He's probably going to murder the role.

Get that paper.
