Simon Kinberg Talks Resolving The Wolverine Mystery From The End Of DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

One of the more confusing elements of X-Men: Days Of Future Past was its final scene. After Wolverine's past self is left at the bottom of a river, he is rescued by William Stryker. As it turns out, it's not Stryker at all, but Mystique in disguise. This left a lot of fans puzzled as to what the scene's significance would be to future stories. Would this mean Wolverine would be rescued from his fate with Weapon X? Even more confusion ensued when Wolverine appeared at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse's most recent trailer, seemingly in the clutches of Weapon X anyway (this was later confirmed by director Bryan Singer). In a new interview with CinemaBlend, producer and writer Simon Kinberg (who also wrote Apocalypse) explained the significance of the scene from Days Of Future Past and how it affects the upcoming Apocalypse"One of the things we talk about in Days of Future Past - there’s a scene where Hank/Beast talks about the immutability of time. Basically, you can change the way the future goes, but it finds its way back. So while we don’t show how, it found its way back to Wolverine being part of Weapon X and under the thumb of Stryker, that’s the idea."

This is quite a confusing answer. While it certainly explains why Wolverine ends up with his adamantium skeleton again, it doesn't provide any explanation as to why Mystique was on that boat impersonating Stryker. And if time manages to "find its way back", wouldn't that mean that the time travel mission from Days Of Future Past was pointless? From the sounds of it, we may have to wait until X-Men: Apocalypse releases next week to find out more details.

So why not keep the ending where Stryker ACTUALLY takes Wolverine

Conidering that Hugh is about to take off his claws, there isn't much to solve now, better concentrate on the X-Men!

@Doomsday8888 - Me too man. I mean one of the most iconic looks and you don't have him don the suit once?

You think if the rights were Marvels, would he be in the suit?

Just doesn't make any sense to me that you wouldn't do it.

@MonsterSquad35 - I'm pretty sure Mangold will use the costume this time, there was an alternate ending to the Wolverine where they show the costume, pretty neat if u ask me! :D

In other words, "Dude, are you serious? We're just a bunch of hacks, with no talent. But we like your money."

"And if time manages to "find its way back", wouldn't that mean that the time travel mission from Days Of Future Past was pointless? "

Yes, hence why they are hacks. The Sentinel program will still go online, so the future we saw at the end of DOFP was nonsense. Hack is what a hack does. There must be a school for hacks somewhere, because it just keeps spitting these people out.

@Luminus - Erm...no?
Something are meant to be, like Wolverine unde going the Weapon x program, recruiting Jean, Scott etc... other can be changed, like that shit future in DOFP, Jean's Death and many other things...
Dude have you even watched the film or are you hating just for the sake of...?

@Doomsday8888 - Yes, and one of those things that are meant to be is the Sentinel program, which is fixed. Go watch the Rogue cut and look at the mid credit teaser. The Sentienls will happen.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/17/2016, 4:19 AM
@Doomsday8888 - Beast even says that you can't change that outcome. Xavier says it at the end of the movie in voice-over and Singer confirms it in his interviews.

@MattBellissimo - It's Trask being fed in the concrete prison Magneto was broken out of. He's there contemplating, which suggests that he will eventually get out and start the program again.

Doomsday8888 - 5/17/2016, 4:43 AM
@Luminus - What? they simply showed that he is spending his time in "jail" what's wrong with that?
The DOFP Ending was pretty clear imo, i'm talking about the future part, Jean, scott, Xavier all alive, a bright future, no sentinel and shit...
And the last thing that Xavier says (McAvoy) is that THE FUTURE IS NOT SET, what more do you want? lol...
Luminus
Luminus - 5/17/2016, 4:43 AM
@MattBellissimo - Yes, it's a better cut, in my opinion. Blink actually speaks and there's an actual conversation about time travel mechanics.

@Doomsday8888 -

Charles Xavier: "The past: a new and uncertain world. A world of endless possibilities and infinite outcomes. Countless choices define our fate: each choice, each moment, a moment in the ripple of time. Enough ripple, and you change the tide... for the future is never truly set."

Here's what Kinberg said:

"Basically, you can change the way the future goes, but it finds its way back."

Which is it? That quote guarantees the Sentinel program will happen. What I want is a coherent script. Not wallpaper mutants and candy storytelling.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/17/2016, 4:53 AM
Xavier suggest it at the beginning, is what I meant to say.
Doomsday8888
Doomsday8888 - 5/17/2016, 4:59 AM
@Luminus - In the beggining he just ask "Is the future truly set?"
At the and we have a clear answer! "The future is never truly set"
Kinberg is just point out that somethings find their way no matter what, it's like judment day in terminator, you can post pone it, but it will happen in a way or the other, in this case, Wolverine will always go to the weapon x program, just look at the trailer for Apocalypse, but how you can tell for sure that the Sentinel-distopic-future will always happen no matter what? You can't!
No, there are thing you can change, and things you cannot, they changed the future in DOFP, simple as that my friend! :D
Luminus
Luminus - 5/17/2016, 5:15 AM
@Doomsday8888 - Judgement Day doesn't make sense, considering all we know from the first Terminator. The movie gets a pass, because it's good. I don't have a problem with Wolverine going into the program, just explain it IN THE MOVIE. That's what real storytellers do.

"how you can tell for sure that the Sentinel-distopic-future will always happen no matter what?"

Then

"No, there are thing you can change, and things you cannot,"

How exactly did you come to this conclusion, when no one said this? This is an inconsistent argument.
Doomsday8888
Doomsday8888 - 5/17/2016, 5:33 AM
@Luminus - Ok...i get it, but try to understand that they can't show the whole story in one single movie, how and when Wolverine will under go to the Weapon X program will be shown in Apocalypse etc...
How Jean survived the Phoenix will be show in the future as well...
And you can tell this things for SURE becouse we actually get to see em, in the last scene from DOFP! Jean i alive even Scott and Xavier, the events from The last stand did not take place, were altered or something, all we know is that those ppl are alive in the future!

They also changed the future, that was the point for this movie, to change history, we no longer have sentinels, there is peace not war, it can still happen...but you CAN'T be sure, becouse it was no shown...

"No, there are thing you can change"
=
They changed the future, with Jean still alive and all..

"... and things you cannot"
As you can see, Xavier recruits Jean/storm/scott after the events of DOFP,this are the things that are meant to be...

Luminus
Luminus - 5/17/2016, 5:53 AM
@Doomsday8888 - "how and when Wolverine will under go to the Weapon X program will be shown in Apocalypse etc..."

No, it won't. Kinsberg says so in his quote. He's too lazy. As for everything else you said, I refer right back to what was said IN THE FILM by beast:

Hank: "Now there's a theory in Quantum Physics that time is immutable. It's like a river, you can throw a pebble into it, create a ripple, but the current always corrects itself. No matter what you do, the river just keeps flowing in the same direction."

So the Sentinel Program will happen.
Doomsday8888
Doomsday8888 - 5/17/2016, 6:26 AM
@Luminus - Maybe, u cant' be sure! Beside, that was Hank's theory, and Xavier even said "No, i refused to believe that" That's why in the ending he says "The future is not set" that's why they change the future.
If u don't believe that, than how can you explained Jean/Scott and Xavier alive and well in the future? You can't!
Some thing can be changed....
Luminus
Luminus - 5/18/2016, 12:59 AM
@Doomsday8888 - "ow can you explained..."

Simple. Inconsistent franchise filled with lazy producers/writers. You'll notice that Scott and Jean didn't age, but everyone else was older.

Mystique was pretending Stryker so she basically should help Charles save Logan from the experiments.

"Basically, you can change the way the future goes, but it finds its way back. So while we don’t show how, it found its way back to Wolverine being part of Weapon X and under the thumb of Stryker, that’s the idea."

it's a logical interpretation, neverless i don't think they should leave it without explanation.

works for me because i can imagine they took Logan to X-Mansion but after a while something bad happened and they lost him again.

for the other viewers - it's (probably) just annoying
DTor91
DTor91 - 5/17/2016, 6:32 AM
@jerryblake - If that is the case, then the previous movie shouldn't have ended the way it did. We all knew about the Stryker/ Logan storyline whether it was from the comics or X2, and he's even an integral part of these films, so to end with what appeared to be a twist and then no pay off, it looks me like they just decided to drop it and ignore it.

What you're saying is very plausible, but it's too big of an assumption for a viewer to make, and assumptions shouldn't be made about something that big. If it wasn't a big deal, well there wouldn't be an interview with the writer explaining it away. Before any of us have even seen the movie at that.

The whole X-Men franchise in a nutshell.....
DTor91
DTor91 - 5/17/2016, 6:25 AM
Ah, so basically just like how it was never explained how Wolverine got his adamantium back in DOFP and never shown how big of a jump in time they were in while in the future compared to what set things in motion at the end of The Wolverine, let alone if gray-templed Wolverine was the same Wolverine at all.

And yet I see people here call that film one of "the greatest CBMs yet." For a film that wa supposed to correct or retcon continuity errors or flat-out dumb decisions the previous films made, it sure made even more continuity errors and dumb decisions. That looks to continue here, and for a writer to speak on this, this sure was a lazy and in creative answer.

@DTor91 - I didn't like dofp thought first class was much better but still not a big fan of these movies and the x-men were my favorite comics
DTor91
DTor91 - 5/17/2016, 7:08 AM
@jamesdnyc - I also think First Class was a much better film. I didn't dislike DOFP, but I definitely don't hold it in the same praise that most people seem to. And I was able to ignore what I mentioned based on the context of the film, but with this interview and the excuse they're using, that same logic applies to all the films in the series then. They were better off not saying anything at all.
