X-MEN: DOFP: Nicholas Hoult Reveals Why 'Beast' Looks Human In Some Shots

When the first few official stills from the movie were released, fans wondered why Hoult's Hank McCoy appeared normal looking at times, and then others as the bouncing blue Beast we know and love. In the following interview the actor spills all. Mild SPOILERS ahead..

Towards the end of X-Men: First Class, Nicholas Hoult's Hank McCoy accidentally transformed himself into the blue, cat-like creature that would come to be known as 'Beast'. Comic fans will be more familiar with this look than his human one, as that's how he's generally been depicted over the last 40 years! Because of this, we all assumed that the character would keep his furry blue appearance heading into Bryan Singer's Days Of Future Past, and obviously we've seen that he has...but not exactly in the way we'd have thought. While speaking to JoBlo, Hoult reveals that they've basically turned McCoy into a blue version of The Hulk!

"What's happened up to this point is between the time of the last movie and this movie my character has created a serum which basically controls his mutation so his appearance is normal as long as he doesn’t get worked up. Any animal instinct or urges, that kind of brings him out. So yeah, he changes into Beast a few times throughout the story and they've done some great action sequences with him this time, particularly in the mansion flying around on these chandeliers and stuff."

One of the defining traits of Hank McCoy has always been his coming to terms with his physical appearance while maintaining his gentle spirit and brilliant mind, so introducing this serum that allows him to look normal 90% of the time could really be seen as doing a pretty big disservice to the character. Of course we don't know exactly how it'll all play out, but based on just what Hoult says here I'd say they're in for a bit of backlash! What do you guys think? I could have been reading this wrong but from the set interviews with Mcavoy it seemed like he was hinting at the fact that Hank some how figures out a way fro Xavier to walk again now I have no idea how the [frick] he does that. I have zero expectations from this movie so there's no chance of being disappointed(well I hope that's case)

And even with this news people will still act dumbfounded with understanding why Hank will look the way his does in the film...lol Very glad we're getting some clear-ups on things people are questioning about. Oh and what happened to the trailer Singer was supposed to have released the day right after Guardians "to steal the shine" for the film folks? (sarcasm)

It still defeats the whole purpose why beast is beast

But I'll let this go for now, it'll put more story into why beast is supposed to be beast

But if Hank found a way to aid in Xavier to walk in the 70s why isn't he walking in the future using that same technology where supposedly things are more advanced?

@ 0megaDaGod

I guess in a movie, that has such a huge budget, the cost for full-time Beast make-up would not really be a factor. Also, I'd say it's propably more complicated and costly to stage multiple transformation scenes then it would be to just let him be Beast all the time.

Obviously he learns to accept his appearance at some point between this film and The Last Stand, and stops using the serum.

Lol, c'mon now seriously guys? What happens to the image reducer so many people referred this to? Animalistic like urges (aka part of the ongoing evolution of his mutation) Beast is always going through changes in the comics so why people are getting so worked up about this is beyond me. lol

Lol well it's true....

But going to think about I'll let this go since at the end of first Beast was a A-hole to Mystique about looking normal and all

But then in Last Stand he was proud to be the blue furry thing and didnt take the cure

So I guess this movie we find out why he becomes mutant and proud

But the whole make me angry and turn into a beast thing is silly, they could of went another way with that

The actors & movie studio executives want the faces of the top talent to be seen for a major portion of the movie.
That's why Thor never wears his helmet,Cap & Iron Man constantly remove their helmets.

Wolverine never wears a mask & Spidey keeps getting his mask tore up or taken off.
Oh Well...more of the same.

"my character has created a serum which basically controls his mutation so his appearance is normal as long as he doesn’t get worked up."

I don't recall Banner in the Marvel/Disney films "successfully" creating a serum that stabilizes him from turning into the hulk.

Pretty much no different than the image inducer from the comics, just ties more directly into what was established in First Class with Beast trying to change his appearance on a molecular level.
Gaebora

This actually fixes a continuity error because in X2 he was shown on the TV as human. That's another one off the list. I like the idea.
GhostDog

It's an interesting dynamic for character development and a reason for the studio to display their talents actual face. I think it's intriguing to have Hank still digging his new form. No one was over turning into an animal easily. T makes sense that he would iggy it at first but he may learn to accept it once he discovers the oncoming war and how he Gould embrace his mutant abilities and fight for his race. Also, he's a scientist so he would try to find any way to look human. He appeared human for years working under the CIA. He's used to false faces

You know the thing I've noticed is that with all these changes Singer is fixing the continuity.

1. Patrick Stewart was walking in X3 flashback and Xorigins Wolverine. FIX, Hank enables him to walk, so he'll properly lose his mobility later on down the line.

2. In X2 we see Hank as a human, FIX, Hank develops a serum to be able to still appear human, but by X3 apparently it no longer works as he is amazed to see his hand.

You guys are all bitching about how he's ruining the Xmen, when in reality he's finding creative ways to fix the botched up job Fox has done to it while Singer was away.
