Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw flexed its muscle at the box office this weekend.
The blockbuster spinoff, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, hauled in $60.8 million domestically - a respectible opening in line with what Paramount’s
Mission: Impossible – Fallout opened to a year ago.
But the
Fast & Furious franchise has a massive appeal overseas, and
Hobbs & Shaw capitalized on that with a $120 million international haul. And this figure is not including China, where
Hobbs & Shaw has yet to open.
In all, Universal is looking at a $180.8 million global opening for the action spinoff, which commanded a $200 million budget.
“We’re very thrilled with the global release, a tremendous start with a big market like China still to come,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution.
“[Director] David Leitch, The Rock and Jason Statham created an original and really thrilling adventure that completelments the franchise tremendously well."
For both Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, it's their best opening outside of the main
Fast & Furious franchise, both domestically and internationally. It's Universal's fifth-highest grossing global launch ever, behind only
The Fate of the Furious,
Jurassic World,
Furious 7, and
Fifty Shades of Grey.
Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America's Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw currently boasts a 67% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but a 90% audience score.
