Idris Elba Responds To Past Rumors Linking Him To The Role Of James Bond

Talking to journalists after winning the Golden Globe for "Best Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie" for his role in Luther, the actor has responded to past rumors that he's being considered for the role of 007 once Daniel Craig quits.

Last year, rumors emerged that the THOR star was one of the favourites to play iconic Ian Fleming creation James Bond once Daniel Craig decided to leave the role behind. After winning a Golden Globe for his performance as DCI John Luther in Luther, he spoke to journalists about the win and the subject of 007 came up. Here's what he had to say.

"There was a huge rumour that once Daniel Craig finishes playing Bond that they were looking for someone different and my name was in that mix. And I answered a bunch and of questions and the bottom line is of course, I'd be honoured to play the part if it comes my way."

Him for everyone. :P I'll be just fine if he becomes Bond anyway, great actor indeed. What I concern is the general people...I mean, Craig's bond got so much criticism for just being a blond, then totally no offense; what would they say if the race is changed? But as I've said, I'll personally be fine if he's the next Bond, could be very well interesting - though I'd love to see Henry Cavill for the role more.

He would be awesome. He'd be sick with the accent and he's physically capable to follow Craig, unlike Fassbender and his toothpick legs.

That rhymed.

there would be melt down if that happens. it would be awesome to watch. you'd get the usual clichés 'I'm not racist, but james bond should be white'

I have nothing against Elba as Bond. He would embody the persona perfectly. The backlash would be incredible.I'm usually someone who doesn't mind deviating from the source material for good reason and a black Bond is quite a deviation. That said, we are in a day and age where it has little bearing.

If he got the part, I wouldn't mind at all. If Ice Cube, Martin Lawrence or Eddie Murphy got the part...I'd be pissed!

Idris as Shaft? That's insulting to his talent.

NeoBaggins - 1/16/2012, 6:34 AM
@Nomis Yeah, if they planned on taking the material seriously, which it can't be unless they're making Shaft Begins. Sam Jackson fit the role. It's a remake of a Blaxploitation TV show. Idris would have to dumb himself down and ack stupit to play that role. He's a good actor, and even though CBMs and other types of films he's been in may not always give him room for shakespear, they at least showcase his skills to a degree. Shat would give him nothing. It's my dooty to please that booty *sigh*

Leave that shit to Michael Jai White or soembody. Maybe Jaimi Foxx can bring Shaft back. Personally, I don't think anbody is checkin for a new Shaft. ORIGINAL African American action hero would be nice though. Why Shaft?

Elba would rock it but I think Chiwetel Ejiofor would be a better choice for a black Bond personally.

NeoBaggins - 1/16/2012, 6:41 AM
@Dedpool Yeah, when they threw his name in the mix, I don't think they were looking for a "black bond", they just thought he was a good choice for the role.

Deezam.

""Stick to the source material" will be the excuse for there racism."

Just texted my significant other, who is black and she texted back..."That would be ridiculous and you know i'm not a big Bond fan."

Guess she is racist according to you?

@Nomis I don't know. If you have a good script and plan on hiring a good actor, why not make an original movie? Unless the trailer is steller, the moment people hear Shaft, it's going to be written off at light speed.

And why has no one ever made any Fury/Wayne mash ups out of Shaft clips? There's some really good material in there. They literally look like Bruce Wayne and Nick Fury in the movie.

@Caedus137 I know Fassbender is turning into the IT guy right now, but I think he needs to step his game up for Bond. He has the accent, the end. When he's more seasoned and has a little more presence to execute the cold steel plus the charm, I can see him doing Bond. Right now, I think he's missing something.

Neo - Fair comment. As good as he was playing Magneto, he did seem to slip back into his native Irish once or twice... We'll have to see. Maybe Prometheus will be the one to swing it for him one way or the other?

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY - Not wanting a black Bond doesn't make someone racist. I like Elba but he shouldn't be Bond because the character is not black. That would be like casting a caucasian as Luke Cage.

BTW, thanks for the pics of all that lovely brown sugar :)

Hello to the [frick]ing NO! sorry, not racists but I could not watch a bond film with a black guy as bond,I would be thinking bond has had a sergical race change,EVEN Will smith smith was considered for superman and he said and I quote ''you shouldnt mess with white peoples heroes'' and I see this as no different

I love this site! Haha I love when the race card gets pulled because people don't want the race of a major character to change! If they made Q black...ok whatever. M? Whatever, but not Bond! The majority of people who love and live the Bond franchise wouldn't buy it! Not only do they have to deal with a new Bond every decade or so, but now he's continuing his story, and is somehow a black man?? Idris Elba...don't get me wrong, the guy's a GREAT actor, but he's not Bond and he never will be. Wanna call ME a racist because I want my characters faithfully adapted? [frick] YOU!! Let's see you get on board with my picks for movies that should always and only be played by black actors shall we? Let's make a new Shaft movie starring Tom Hanks as Shaft! YEAH!! Or Black Panther played by Ryan Reynolds, and John Stewart portrayed by Christian Bale!! See I picked great actors for the roles, but only Robert Downey Jr can convincingly act himself out of his own skin color haha

I think Idris would do great as Bond. There's nothing wrong with a black 007. I never agreed with him playing a Norse God (he was solid though), but a secret agent? I fully support it, he's got great personality, acting skills and charm.

I think Bond has become more of an archetype than a character anyway. Sure he has only been played by white guys thus far, but I really don't think switching to a black guy would really make to much difference at thispoint. Especially such a fine actor, he would make a great Bond.

Let me play the devil's advocate.
I've been saying for a while that Bane should have been hispanic. I reason this as being vital to his character, his origins, and then the fact that there's really not a whole lot of hispanic characters in comics. I really like Tom Hardy. Last night I saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy not because of him, not even because of Gary Oldman or Mark Strong, but because of Tomas Alfredson. I was disappointed with Gary Oldman (although it may have just been the role he was playing, I'm speaking with ignorance here), Mark Strong was wonderful as always, but Tom Hardy is just so charismatic, he stole every scene he was in.

You have an actor who is comparable to the ever sensational Michael Fassbender (he got the part after Fassbender declined), playing a super-villain who is going to do a lot of interesting things, but will have his face obscured by a mask and unable to show emotion or expression in anything but his eyes and body language. If I were someone who didn't know the character, I would (and still do) say "waste of talent". Since I DO know the character, I feel that the changes they have made to his presentation are bland and questionable already, and then you add that he is very much white, and it just loses everything from a sensory perspective.

So I make this point about Bane to offer a comparison for why I would be for this and/or against it.

As anyone who has seen Idris Elba knows, he has the presence of Bond already in his body language. He's already got that covered. No question of talent. This is an issue of a black man playing a white character, a character who has been established in what will be 23 movies for 50 years now.

Which means that this would be an effort to tear down that stigma. If he can do what any other previous actor in the role can do, which is play a British spy who has a cold and calculating attitude to compliment his charming demeanor, then what is the problem?

This is not the issue of a white guy playing Shaft, a blaxpoitation character from the 70s. This is not the issue of a Korean actor playing El Mariachi from Robert Rodriguez' Mexican series. This would be Idris Elba playing 007.

Go for it.

I would be more upset if BOND wasn't British than if he were black. As other have said, 007 are numbers, not a race. There is nothing about the character (backstory or otherwise) that makes it necessary for him to be white....HEIMDALL on the otherhand... ;)

As long as an American isn't playing BOND then it's all good! ;)

@PredatorWOLF: Why can't white characters be black people's heroes? Oh, and foreget about changing Supes skincolor. If they changed his hair to brown, then I wouldn't watch the movie.
